Get Rid Of More Weight

0

Going back in the Supertrax archives recently, the editors came to a startling conclusion.

Read the upcoming issue of the mag (coming to Zinio.com December 10, 2010) and you’ll find an article by Mark Lester talking about 12 snowmobiles that have changed the course of history.

What we learned is that the success of nearly every milestone snowmobile in the last 50 years has been the result of the designers getting weight out of the sled.

If you believe the historical record, lightness appears to be what drives change in the snowmobile business.

With this in mind, even today, it’s pretty obvious the OEMs are attempting to find ways to make their sleds lighter.

It’s not an easy task, especially if you’re building 4-stroke snowmobiles. However, Yamaha has come up with a new aftermarket skidframe that may be heading in the right direction.

So far it’s only for mountain riders but its bare-bones architecture is certainly transferable to trail sleds. The weight saving from this suspension is pretty substantial.

Could the technology transfer to the rest of the market? With the present development and evolution of air shock tech, many of the beachheads of suspension calibration have been overcome, so springs, rate adjusters and couplers may not be necessary.

Of course, the biggest opportunity for shedding weight is in the engine itself – and this may be where the biggest breakthroughs take place in the future.

OFSC Improves Rider Experience with New Website

Ontario Snowmobiling Benefits from New High Tech Features Including Interactive Trail Guide, Visual Trail Status Reports and iSnowMobile App

High tech is improving the Ontario snowmobiling experience as riders receive even more value for their permit dollars.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) has launched its totally revamped, super-easy to navigate and content-rich website. High tech features include many snowmobiling firsts, such as the interactive trail guide, visual trail status reports and iSnowMobile, the new OFSC iPhone App.

To achieve these high tech advances, the OFSC partnered with MapSherpa, a leading provider of outdoor oriented mapping products and solutions. With the all-new the Interactive Trail Guide, Internet savvy OFSC snowmobilers will now be able to plan their rides, check for in-season re-routes and detours, and view the latest, colour-coded trail status updates online.

Based on the most recent GPS digital data, the new interactive guide features the most accurate and up to date display of the entire 34,000+ kilometre OFSC trail network available anywhere. Best of all, access is free for OFSC riders. OFSC snowmobilers can take their trails with them and check trail status wherever they are by downloading the entire OFSC trail network directly from the new Interactive site to their smart phones via the new iSnowMobile app (available at www.apple.com/iphone for $2.99).

For a small fee, riders can also order customized and high definition hard copies of the Interactive Trail Guide site with a choice of area, size, layout and base map. In coming months, the OFSC will further enhance the site with such new features as popular tour loops, digital trail distances and expanded points of interest that can include the locations of items as diverse as signboards, bathrooms, club houses and events, and scenic lookouts, plus pop-up contact info for and photos of lodgings, restaurants, gas stations, rental locations, dealerships, repair shops and much more.

Does Cat Have Another 4-stroke?

0

We’d be the first to admit that although turbochargers are certainly a lot of fun, their extra plumbing and complexity drives prices higher.

For instance, Arctic Cat’s Z1 Turbo is without question the horsepower king of the industry, producing between 175 and 177 ponies. No one else comes close.

If you’ve ever ridden one of these monsters you know how much torque a turbocharger produces and frankly, dipping into the throttle of a Z1 Turbo is like getting a swift kick from behind from a moose.

Cost and weight are certainly real considerations in the marketplace these days and although there’s been nothing but silence from Arctic Cat, we’ve heard rumors there’s an all-new 3-cylinder 4-stroke in development.

Snowmobiles seem very happy with this 4-stroke configuration, as evidenced by the success of Yamaha’s Vector and Ski-Doo’s 4-TEC and, although Cat has proven the parallel twin in the Z1 can be a powerhouse, a naturally aspirated triple in the 1100-1200cc range is fully capable of producing a safe, reliable 160 horses.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if the new Cat chassis we’ve been speculating about also introduced a new, lightweight 4-stroke triple?

READY TO WIN: TEAM ARCTIC RACERS FOR 2011

0

The Top Racers and Teams in all Forms of Competition

With a powerful, refined cadre of 2011 race sleds on which they’ll ride,, a legendary crew of Team Arctic racers are primed for another victorious season of snocross, cross-country, hillclimb, oval and drag racing in 2010-2011. The stakes are high, and the winning bet is on these accomplished racers whose triumphant legacy is unmatched.

“We’ve put together what we believe is the best overall race program in the sport, comprised of the strongest racers, most experienced crews, top-level sponsors and a fleet of snowmobiles that proved to be the best last season, and that have been further improved for 2011,” said Mike Kloety, Team Arctic Race Manager. “I predict another record-breaking season.”

More than any other team in the sport, Arctic Cat is committed to supporting top-tier and grassroots racers, circuits and disciplines for 2011.

“We’re pumped up to have the very elite racers in a few circuits, because they’re great representatives who win the big events,” said Kloety. “Yet we’re equally proud of our regional racers, and those who compete in some of the less-publicized forms of racing.

“Arctic Cat has always committed itself to racing success, on every level, in every form of competition and across North America. It’s in our blood, it’s who we are and it’s why we win more than our share.”

Snocross: More Championships on the Horizon

There is no denying the winning formula for the Team Arctic Snocross program which, for 2011, looks like a sure-bet for championship domination.

Perhaps the biggest news is Tucker Hibbert’s commitment to race the entire snocross season. The four-time and defending X Games champion and FIM World Snocross Champion won nine ISOC National finals last season aboard his Monster Energy Arctic Cat. He’s the hands-down favorite to add a couple high-point championships to his resume this season.

The Arctic Cat Factory Team will consist of second-year Pro Dan Ebert, who last season won the famed USCC I-500 cross-country and scored multiple podium finishes in snocross. He’ll be joined once again by Semi-Pro Cody Thomsen, who last season won several finals and finished second in points, and fellow Semi-Pro Kyle Pallin who also stood atop of the podium on multiple occasions last year. The factory team will once again be managed by Russ Ebert.

Once again, Christian Bros. Racing (CBR) will field the largest private team in the industry, and with an added emphasis on cross-country. Pro riders will include perennial podium finishers Garth Kauffman and Ryan Simons, now joined by last year’s Semi Pro points champion, Logan Christian, who has made the jump to Pro. Zach Pattyn returns again in the Pro class, as will Cory Davis when he recovers from an off-season injury. And Carly Davis will compete in the Pro Women’s class at select events.

The Sportech/Arctic Cat race team now includes Sweden’s top Pro, Johan Lidman, silver medalist in the FIM World Championships of snocross. He joins Semi-Pro Andrew Carlson for a potent combination in the top two classes.

Arctic Cat is concentrating more effort and expertise on the east coast for 2011, with Green Mountain Racing (Matt Pichner, Emil Otteson, Chris Ackerman and Cody Flach) and CMT Racing (Corin Todd, Ash Waskob and Jesse Bonaduce) carrying the Team Arctic banner.

All Terrain Cycle Racing is Team Arctic’s Canadian contingent, with Dustin Vandrie and Katejun Coonishish in the Pro class, Sean MaCauley and Shawn Elmhurst in Semi-Pro, Wakenda Peters in Pro Women, and Joe Peters in Junior.

Cross-Country: Comprehensive Support at all Levels

Last season Arctic Cat stamped their supremacy on the USCC cross-country circuit, with three different Pro class winners and complete domination of the Semi Pro and Sport classes.

Flying the Christian Bros. Racing banner will be defending Pro 600 Champion Brian Dick (who won three races last season), defending Pro Open champ D.J. Ekre, plus the entire CBR snocross crew.

Brothers MotorSports is back on green again this season, with Pro Ryan Huston, Ryan Greening in Semi Pro, and Coltan Vandeputte in the Sport 85 classes.

Joining them will be several dozen racers in all USCC classes.

Legendary Iron Dog champion Scott Davis is ready to team up with his son Cory to tackle Alaska’s famed cross-country event. They’ll be joined by Todd Palin/Eric Quam along with many other AC Teams in an attempt to notch Team Arctic’s 12th win out of 27 editions of the famed event.

Hillclimb: The Kings Remain the Same

Year-after-year, the fast, fearless crew of Team Arctic Hillclimb racers has proven all but unstoppable on the slopes of Snow King in Jackson and every venue of the RMSHA mountain circuit. Families like the Tapios, Zollingers, Tuppers, Frisbys, Archibaulds and Frees are joined by Buckallew, McClure and others for a mountain-topping tour de force aboard the highly refined M Series snowmobiles.

Drag, Oval, Enduro and Watercross

Last season Cadarette Racing’s Troy Dewald and Jeff Leuenberger put Arctic Cat atop the Soo 500 enduro for the first time in 42 years, breaking a hex that had jinxed the win on numerous previous occasions. It was a historic moment for the team and racers, and they’re back in 2011 to defend their historic win.

In oval race, Team Arctic is represented by the always-amazing, three-time World Champion P.J. Wanderscheid, as well as the emerging and youthful powerhouse, Hoglund Racing.

Team Arctic’s drag racing program continues to highlight the indomitable power of the 800 H.O. engine and the steadfast preparation of sport’s best racers. Whether it’s setting world speed records aboard the Z1 Turbo, winning the biggest grass drag events or dominating the winter ice, names like Hall, Shilts, Howard and others remain the backbone of the team’s straight line effort.

Team Arctic’s Dedicated Sponsors

Team Arctic’s success on and off the track is made possible in part because of the strong, loyal support of its sponsors, each of whom shares the same passion as our racers and Arctic Cat.

For 2011, Team Arctic is grateful to announce the return of these great sponsors: Camoplast tracks, APV Synthetic Oil, Fox Racing Shox, Speedwerx, Renton Coil Springs (RCS), Moto Tassinari/VForce3, TEAM, Figgins Transport, Mitsuboshi drive belts, Stud Boy traction, C&A Ultra Pro skis, Smith Optics and Sportech.

Understanding Diamond Drive

Question:

Dear Motorhead:

What are the pros and cons of Diamond Drive? I think the older F7s without it were faster than the new ones with it.

Please advise.

Mark

Thanks for your email!

Diamond Drive was built to get rid of the cumbersome drive system sleds have used for decades. The idea seemed sound – loose the chaincase, jackshaft and associated bearings and still maintain the gear down effect of a chaincase.

A couple realities have interfered with this over-all logic in some applications. D-Drive requires a very low mounting position and is a factor in restricting more centralized mass as is seen in the Ski-Doo XP with the secondary almost on top of the primary.

The other issue is the complexity of gearing changes with the system. It is still insanely costly to acquire alternate gear sets for D-Drive compared to any competitive chaincase system. One undeniable effect of D-Drive is its seamless feel.

The system gets rid of drive-line slop we are so accustomed to on sleds – we don’t even know it’s there – but it is apparent on all chaincase setups. I suspect the need to centralize mass will ultimately over rule the benefits of D-Drive in the future. Having to put the secondary so low means you can’t get the engine back as far as most makers want in an effort to achieve increasingly centralized mass and rider forward ergos.

I’ve heard both arguments about D-Drive vs chaincase drive on F-7’s so I really think its more about clutch set-up and track friction. I don’t think D-Drive is slower – in most cases.

Hope this helps,

Arctic Cat Announces Leadership Succession Plans

Christopher Twomey to Retire as CEO at Year End, Remain Executive Board Chair; President and COO Claude Jordan to Succeed Twomey as CEO

Arctic Cat Inc. (NASDAQ:ACAT) announced today that Christopher Twomey, 62, plans to retire as chief executive officer at the end of December 2010. He will continue to serve as executive board chair to ensure a smooth transition. The company named Claude Jordan, 54, to succeed Twomey as president and chief executive officer on January 1, 2011.

“During the past two years, Claude played a significant role in the company’s return to profitability, despite a recession that hit the power sports industry hard. His understanding, energy and passion for this business will serve Arctic Cat well.”

The company’s leadership succession plan accommodates Twomey’s decision to retire after serving as Arctic Cat’s CEO for 24 years. He became president and CEO in 1986, was named a director of the company in 1987 and assumed the board chair position in 2003.

During his tenure, Twomey led Arctic Cat through an initial public offering in 1990, increased the number of employees from 99 to more than 1,300 people, and grew revenues from $7.5 million to more than $450 million in fiscal 2010. Under Twomey’s leadership, Arctic Cat also entered the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) business, which now accounts for the largest percent of the company’s revenues. Twomey’s contributions to the industry were recognized by his being named to the Snowmobile Hall of Fame in 2008.

“First, the board wants to thank Chris for his leadership of the company for more than two decades. He built Arctic Cat into a market leader in the power sports industry, and is leaving the company in strong financial shape with an outstanding team. We look forward to continuing to work with Chris as board chair,” said Kenneth Roering, lead director of Arctic Cat’s board. “The board also congratulates Claude on his new role. He has a proven record of success at Arctic Cat and a deep understanding of the company’s business. We are confident in his ability to continue to profitably grow the company and enhance shareholder value.”

Jordan joined Arctic Cat as president and chief operating officer in 2008, and was elected to the company’s board of directors in August 2010. During that time, Jordan has been responsible for Arctic Cat’s operations and has led the company’s ATV business for the past two years, implementing significant product line changes and increasing Arctic Cat’s ATV market share.

Twomey commented: “During the past two years, Claude played a significant role in the company’s return to profitability, despite a recession that hit the power sports industry hard. His understanding, energy and passion for this business will serve Arctic Cat well.”

“I’m excited to build upon Arctic Cat’s strong reputation, and I look forward to working with our dedicated employees to grow this business,” Jordan stated. “My initial priorities are to continue carrying out Arctic Cat’s strategic plan and to further enhance the company’s profitability and operational efficiency. Arctic Cat is well-positioned for success. We have the vision, proven strategies and talented people to achieve our long-term goals.”

Before joining Arctic Cat, Jordan was employed most recently in executive positions with The Home Depot and General Electric. Jordan served as vice president of The Home Depot and president/general manager of its THD At-Home Services, Inc. business from 2003 until 2008.

Prior to that, Jordan was with General Electric Company from 1998 to 2003. During his last four years with General Electric, he served as president and CEO of GE Water Technologies, a worldwide water treatment manufacturing, sales and services business. Before heading GE Water Technologies, Jordan spent a year in business development with GE Power Systems, managing mergers and acquisitions for new initiatives.

Jordan earned a bachelor’s degree from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., a master’s degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

F8 Sno Pro vs. Crossfire 7

Question:

Dear Motorhead:

What do you think is a better sled a 2008 Arctic Cat F8 Sno Pro or a 2006 Arctic Cat Crossfire 7 Sno pro?

Thanks,

Loyal Reader

Reply:

Thanks for your email!

Okay, there’s little doubt the F-7 Crossfire was a cannon and it’s power is now almost legendary. The CF-8 in its first form – the MY 08 model – was a bit of a disappointment.

This is proven by the fact AC re-engineered that mill last year and it is now extremely strong – but that didn’t happen until MY 10.

Does that help?

FIFTH MANUFACTURER A POSSIBILITY

0

We know, we know. This kind of speculation has been running around for the last ten years. However, there’s finally some evidence it may actually take place.

What makes this load of recent data particularly believable is that the fifth company already exists and has been doing business in Europe for decades. We’re talking about Lynx, a subsidiary of BRP, manufacturers of Ski-Doo snowmobiles.

The company has recently expanded and modernized its factory capabilities and is ravenous to get into new markets.

What makes the rumor so plausible is the fact that all of Ski-Doo’s E-TEC, 4-TEC and ACE super-clean engine technology is already in assembly in the company’s Rovaniemi, Finland manufacturing facility and being dropped into a full selection of 2011 Lynx snowmobiles that look a lot like the lightest-in-the-biz XP, XR and XU versions of the Ski-Doo.

The sleds look very similar to Ski-Doo models but have suspension differences and some subtle features and model segments not offered this side of the ocean.

You’ll get more gritty details in the upcoming issue of Supertrax but we think this could actually happen within the next two years.
