2018 YAMAHA LINEUP!

Fifty years of snowmobiles, and the only Japanese manufacturer, is a cherished milestone that Yamaha is proud to have achieved.

Yamaha could not have reached its status as a leader in the snowmobile industry without the support of its dealer network, industry partners, and most importantly, its valued customers.

A heartfelt thank you to all who chose, and continue to choose, Yamaha. Please enjoy this video for a look back at some of the models that have made Yamaha’s name synonymous with quality, innovation and performance.

In 2017, Yamaha attacked the top of the market by releasing the incredible Sidewinder with Genesis 998 Turbo. For 2018, Yamaha is celebrating their 50th snowmobile anniversary, not just with a number of themed LE models, but with a noble objective. Yamaha’s goal is to ensure the industry grows and matures for another 50 years by releasing SnoScoot, the perfect introduction to snowmobiling for new riders.

SnoScoot offers a stylish, off-trail ready, reliable, trail compliant, affordable gas and go snowmobile, but it’s also some of the most fun you can have on snow! The 192cc, Yamaha four-stroke engine, adjustable suspension and roomy ergonomics ensure the SnoScoot will keep riders smiling for years to come.

Yamaha will be aggressively promoting the SnoScoot to non-snowmobilers, demonstrating how beneficial the snowmobile lifestyle is for families, community building and rider empowerment.

At the other end of the spectrum, Yamaha continues to push the performance envelope by releasing a total of six Sidewinder M-TX models for 2018, including base, SE and LE models in 153 and 162 track length configurations.

To go along with the dynamic Genesis 998 Turbo engine, each M-TX model has important changes like a new dropped chain case with flatter approach angle, revised intake venting with pre-filter, updated mountain-friendly ergonomics, and 8 tooth drive sprockets. The Yamaha Sidewinder M-TX series is changing what riders thought they knew about four-stroke mountain snowmobiles.

What would a 50th anniversary be without some limited edition models? In 2018, Yamaha celebrates by releasing seven 50th anniversary themed, upgraded LE models in Sidewinder R-TX, L-TX, B-TX and M-TX configurations, Viper L-TX and Apex and Apex X-TX. Even the SRX120 – while not a spring only LE – does get a 50th anniversary graphics package. Not to be outdone, two other versions of LE are available in ‘Yamaha Blue’ racing motif, those being the Sidewinder L-TX LE and Sidewinder M-TX LE 153. Each of the LE models receives a number of specification upgrades, but they are only available during Yamaha’s Spring Power Surge, running this year until April 15, 2017.

On the two-up side, Yamaha has an all-new SRVenture DX to satisfy long distance two up riders who are looking to put on big miles in maximum comfort. Yamaha has also incorporated its innovative Electric Power Steering system to the VK Professional II, a significant upgrade that will allow better slow speed maneuvering and hauling capabilities for those that work just as much as they play on their snowmobile.

After fifty years, Yamaha is aggressively moving forward into 2018, pushing the momentum forward from a strong 2017 season. From bottom to top, Yamaha is releasing the models customers want, and the snowmobiles that will grow the industry. The time to Conquer Snow with Yamaha, is now.

ARCTIC CAT THUNDERCAT 900/1000 TRIPLE

THE 10 BEST SNOWMOBILE ENGINES OF ALL TIME! This list of 10 encapsulates all that is great in snowmobile powerplants going back several decades.

The snowmobiling world probably wasn’t ready for the arrival of the original 900cc 163-hp Suzuki triple in the Thundercat.

In the early 1990s it was Arctic Cat that pushed the performance envelope first. When the competition responded, Cat came back with a bigger bullet, the 1000 Thundercat!

Inasmuch as the 1000 was outrageously powerful and fully capable of 120-mph pulls down Kevlar Lake, it was a gentle giant with an easy engagement and exceptionally smooth power delivery.

The competition threw everything it had at the T-Cat but as time is our witness, the monstrous reed-inducted, triple-piped-triple reigned supreme for almost a decade.

POLARIS INDY XLT TRIPLE

THE 10 BEST SNOWMOBILE ENGINES OF ALL TIME! This list of 10 encapsulates all that is great in snowmobile powerplants going back several decades.

It started as a 580cc triple and eventually grew to 600. Although this “Extra-Lite Triple” wasn’t a performance powerhouse, it established itself as a reliable, reasonably light 3-cylinder engine in an era where the whole industry was shifting to 2-stroke triples.

The key to the XLT was its “monoblock” construction that placed the water jackets and cylinders very close together to conserve space and weight.

We used to comment this engine played the “National Anthem of Snowmobiling” out its exhaust.

Tens of thousands were sold and thousands still remain.

POLARIS FUJI 400-488 TWIN

0

THE 10 BEST SNOWMOBILE ENGINES OF ALL TIME! This list of 10 encapsulates all that is great in snowmobile powerplants going back several decades.

First introduced in the 1980s as a 400 and then inflated to 488ccs in 1989, this very basic piston port twin engraved its place in history, lasting in production until the early 2000s.

It found a home in at least a half dozen different Polaris platforms and offered consistent, reliable 80-range horsepower to the masses.

The engine was known for its lack of bells and whistles – no reed valves, no exhaust valves. Its last versions stepped up to flatslide carbs and that was about as hi-tech as it got.

We have fond memories of the first Indy 500 twin in 1989. That over-achiever blew away sleds 100ccs larger and there wasn’t any good explanation why.

Yamaha Viper: A Joint Effort That Works

11 SLEDS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING…AND HOW…

Although it wasn’t the first time two snowmobile companies ever entered into a manufacturing agreement, the 2013 deal between Yamaha and Arctic Cat was a blockbuster move.

The world economy had been struggling with a deeply-rooted recession since 2008 and budgets for design, research & development and tooling had slapped many companies, not necessarily just in powersports, upside the head.

Since the worldwide snowmobile business is arguably less than 200,00 units a year, it just didn’t make sense for Yamaha, given its market share grasp of that 200,000 at the time, to go crazy designing a whole new fleet of snowmobile platforms.

At the same time Arctic Cat’s longtime agreement with Suzuki to build its snowmobile engines was drawing to a close and Cat needed a new and innovative engine supplier.

Events were merging perfectly for the two companies: Cat needed an engine supplier and Yamaha needed up-to-date chassis tech. Thus the Viper and the 7000 series were born.

From the first time we rode them we loved these two 4-strokes. Handling was excellent and the Yamaha 1049cc EFI triple made the most seamless 4-stroke power we’d ever experienced.

Certainly there had already been faster 4-strokes offered, but this 130-hp engine in the ProCross chassis was and still is, simply a fabulous combination.

Four model years in, the Viper has evolved itself into an even better product and Yamaha hardcores have to admit they like it and that was Yamaha’s greatest fear, initially. By working together, two great companies built something that will keep their customers happy for a long time.
