Drooling Over Firecat

0

Any conversation about a Firecat absolutely must include its engine. We’ve already drooled praise about how amazing the power output is with both the 600 and the 700.

It’s all true and those who have ridden one or been beaten by one will agree these are among the fastest, lightest 2-strokes ever put into a snowmobile.

This year, on EFI models, Arctic Cat has thrown a wild card by fooling with the fuel injection system.

It’s all wrapped up in EPA emission compliance and whether or not it will have an effect on the 600’s power output is a bit of a mystery.

Freestyle Delivers Fun

0

Powered by a 300cc 2-stroke Rotax making less than 30 HP, the 370 lb Freestyle is moderately powered, but this doesn’t keep it from effectively delivering the fun.

Fitted with the SC-4 skid frame in the third variant of the REV chassis, the ergos and ride quality are excellent and the simpler single A-arm ski suspension locates the skis with plenty of precision for the velocities contemplated by this sled.

A little voice in our heads keeps saying this hip-hop Ski-Doo should find a place in the hearts of riders from all “demographics” just because it’s a very appealing package.

Choose Your Fusion 600 Settings

The Rider Select moveable handlebar pole on the Polaris Fusion 600 is a dynamite idea providing what amounts to custom fitting for every rider.

Once each of our riders had the Fusion the way he wanted, there was little fiddling with the Rider Select settings. One thing our team found interesting was watching each pilot adjust the Fusion to the setting that worked best for him.

We found as little as two clicks forwards or backwards on the seven position gradient scale made a significant difference in how the chassis responded to both bumps and steering inputs. Keep in mind there’s a full six inches of total movement available.

We go on record stating this is one of the most significant innovations of the new millennium and we stand by that.

Tour Buddy’s for Everyone!

Seems like we never take any of our sleds on long tours without hooking up a Tour Buddy.

These auxiliary fuel systems work so well, you’ll wonder why you haven’t had one on every sled you’ve ever owned.

The legendary Tour Buddy is available for virtually every sled made including an all-new model for the Polaris IQ Fusion chassis.

There’s definitely one for your REV, Firecat/Sabercat/ZR, tons of Yamaha and Polaris models back to 1989.

Just in time for Christmas, RPM Composites’ New Carbon Fiber Composite, Hi-Performance Hand Guard Shields for snowmobiles ensure your paws are protected by claiming 50% more wind, roost and tree branch coverage than other available hand guards.

The Hi-Performance Hand Guard Shields are molded carbon fiber, high-impact fiberglass and an epoxy resin that provides a beautiful, clear, deep-gloss exterior finish and mount easily to most sleds with a billet aluminum, CNC machined, rugged bracket system capable of taking serious abuse.

A New Rotax?

You can be sure anything Ski-Doo releases will be 2-stroke and most definitely Semi-or Direct (E-Tec) injected.

We think the now six-year-old Series III, cylinder reed Power Tek 800 is most likely to be replaced.

We look for a counterbalanced, SDI or E-Tec injected engine using modular (siamesed) cylinders, a stouter crank and eRAVE, electronically controlled, staged exhaust guillotines.

This engine would offer better fuel economy, much smoother operation, improved clutch durability and a bump in horsepower to the low 140’s.

It’s possible Ski-Doo could cant this motor rearward and use common side (upper side) intake and exhaust, similar to the 800cc rotary valve Sea-Doo SDI twin.

This, of course, would enhance the brand’s centralized mass focus and allow for tighter packaging under the hood of a next generation REV.

The New Rev

The world is awaiting the next generation REV platform. Rumors persist of a 2007 limited build model based on the next generation REV platform.

While that’s a possibility – we think it’s more probable Ski-Doo will intro a new engine for MY’07 and keep the next generation REV under wraps until a limited build release lands next year.
