Hayden Grabs Top-Ten Finish – Illness Foils Taylor

Press Release –

While Yamaha Factory Snocross’ Iain Hayden took a top-10 finish at Canterbury Park Racetrack in Shakopee, MN his teammate Steve Taylor suffered through an illness-handicapped weekend.

Even while suffering the effects from severe stomach flu, Taylor stepped up to race, but a hard crash while making a pass through the rough whoop section effectively ended Taylor’s weekend right then and there.

That put the pressure on Hayden. He rode with confidence in the final, moving up through the field to capture a top-10 in the Pro Open final.

“My main goal this weekend was to make the front row in the main, but a prototype component problem meant I had to get in through the LCQ. It would have been nice to have a better starting position, however, because it’s difficult to connect with the front runners from the back row,” said Hayden. “But we’ve made a lot of headway with developing the sleds and we’re in the points now.”

Both Hayden and Taylor managed top-three starts in their final bid to make the main but only Hayden would prevail when all was said and done.

While Hayden laid claim to the last transfer spot after a heated battle for the win, Taylor’s massive crash, which saw the race red-flagged, got him an ambulance ride to the local hospital to be checked out.

Taylor feels he will be at 100% soon and is looking forward to the upcoming Winter X-Games competition.

“I knew it would be tough to win this weekend because I hadn’t been able to keep any food down and I felt a bit weak. But my sled was running really well and I didn’t want it to sit idle in the paddock because I happened to be feeling under the weather.”

With his teammate on the sidelines, Hayden took the full weight of the team on his shoulders and he didn’t disappoint. From a back row start, he charged hard the entire race which consisted of a grueling 26 laps. A tenth place finish would be the reward for his tenacity.

“We’re very pleased that Iain rode with confidence throughout the full 26 lap final. This should give him the momentum to keep getting into those mains and onto the front row. Our objective for this season is still to finish in the top-five,” said team manager Andre Laurin. “Both Iain and Steve are contenders and the FX Nytro® sleds have all the power we could ask for. We’ve been doing a lot of testing and development as the season progresses and it’s paying off.”

Yamaha Factory Team would like to thank the following sponsors for their valuable support: Yamalube®, FXR®, Fox® Shocks, Camoplast®, GYTR®, Fly Racing® and Stud Boy®.

Team Arctic Captures Four Class Wins

Press Release –

Three races into the ISOC National Tour and the competition is still singing the Boy Scouts blues, thanks to another series of crushing wins by Team Arctic racers and crews.

This time it was at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minn., where record spectator attendance witnessed Team Green win both Pro classes, Pro Women and Semi-Pro Open, along with podium finishes in nearly every class.

“Our racers continue to prove their excellence in the highest level of national snocross racing,” said Mike Kloety, Team Arctic Race Manager. “With four wins in the top classes and a point lead in six classes, Canterbury was another hugely successful weekend for our team.”

Once again Tucker Hibbert delivered a mind-boggling, stand-out performance, winning every heat race and both Pro Super Stock and Pro Open finals by convincing margins. The Goodridge, Minn., phenom hasn’t lost a race all season, going six-for-six to absolutely dominate the three National events so far.

Joining Hibbert on the podium in the Pro classes were two racers whose stock are going straight up: Garth Kaufman and Brett Turcotte. Kaufman, of Boise, Idaho, threw down a series of blistering laps in the middle of the Pro Stock final to finish second and his first podium of the season. Turcotte (Clearwater, British Columbia) was equally impressive in Pro Open, turning his first podium-placing of the season with a strong second.

Carly Davis in another undefeated Pro in National competition following another convincing win in the Pro Women class at Canterbury. Davis (Soldotna, Alaska) led a Team Arctic sweep of the top-four, with J.C. Hupe, April Moritz and Taylor Carlson taking second-through-fourth respectively.

Dan Ebert continued his remarkable season in Semi Pro by winning the Open class and finishing second in Semi Pro Super Stock at Canterbury. After missing the opening round in Duluth due to a hand injury, Ebert (Lake Shore, Minn.) has won a class at each National as well as notching top finishes in USCC cross-country races on “off” weekends.

While there was much to celebrate at the Canterbury National, injuries took their toll on two Team Arctic racers. Swedish star Christian Salemark was impacted by another racer on the first lap of the Semi Pro Super Stock final, which effectively took him out of that and the Open class final. His bruises should heal quickly, and he’ll likely return for the next National to defend his Open class point lead.

Logan Christian faces a longer road to recovery, following a last lap crash and subsequent impact from another racer that resulted in a broken collar bone, ribs and internal bleeding.

“Logan suffered a nasty incident, but he’s going to be okay and hopefully return by the end of the season,” said Kloety. “The Christian Bros. Racing team had a real roller-coaster weekend, with excellent finishes by Davis, Turcotte and Kaufman tempered by Logan’s injuries.”

The next snocross race is the ESPN Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., Jan. 22-25, followed by the next ISOC National in Brainerd, Minn., Feb. 6-8.

SPOT Assist Satellite-Based Roadside GPS

Press Release –

Consumers Can Now Benefit From the Safety and Peace-of-Mind Associated Satellite-based Roadside Service over the Inherent Limitations of Cellular-Based Offerings

SPOT LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Globalstar Inc. (NASDAQ: GSAT) and a leader in personal satellite messaging and emergency communications, today announced SPOT Assist, a new roadside GPS safety service for its award-winning SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger.

SPOT Assist offers the world’s only roadside assistance that operates solely on satellite technology for virtually seamless coverage independent of cellular networks.

SPOT is showcasing its products and new services this week at the Consumer Electronics Show in booth number 5218 in the Tech Zone located in the North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center.

SPOT Assist’s roadside service will offer complete 24 hour assistance 7 days a week in the Continental United States and Canada later this spring. By simply activating SPOT Assist with the “Help” button on the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger, users can instantly alert a national roadside response center of their GPS location.

Backed by a leading provider of national roadside assistance, SPOT Assist services include roadside towing, auto-accident assistance, fuel services, tire repair, battery service, lost key and lockout.

Unlike conventional services, such as OnStar, that relay positioning through cellular networks, SPOT Assist combines a GPS receiver with satellite communications technologies to deliver location-based messaging independent of cellular coverage.

The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger is a small, rugged and hand-held GPS unit that can access a world-wide satellite network system to keep you connected virtually anywhere you roam. The SPOT Assist roadside service is expected to be available in other countries later in 2009.

“Our customers have been using SPOT primarily off-road and outside of cellular range to check-in with loved ones or to get help in a real emergency resulting in increased safety and security for outdoor enthusiasts,” said Tom Colby, COO of Globalstar and President of SPOT LLC. “SPOT Assist is an innovative extension of the SPOT product portfolio, and represents one more in a growing list of ways in which SPOT is continuing to deliver services that help to ensure the personal safety and security of our customers around the world at a very modest cost.”

Now with SPOT Assist roadside service, SPOT customers can benefit from a complete GPS safety system which includes four functions that transmit messages based on varying levels of need:

. Help notifies the SPOT Assist roadside response center or others of your GPS location
. Check In lets contacts know where you are and that you are okay
. Track Progress sends and saves your location and allows contacts to track your progress using Google MapsT
. Alert 9-1-1 notifies an emergency rescue coordination center of your GPS location

Since its introduction in December 2007, the SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger has helped initiate close to 100 rescues, many which resulted in lives saved, and has transmitted more than 5 million “peace-of-mind” and “track me” messages world-wide.

SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger retails for $169.99 SRP Customers will be able to purchase SPOT Assist for $129.99 per year at www.findmespot.com. SPOT Assist will include national roadside assistance and unlimited basic SPOT service including Check-in and 9-1-1 emergency response messaging. SPOT Assist is scheduled to be available for purchase in spring 2009.

About SPOT LLC The SPOT Satellite GPS Messenger, the world’s first satellite messenger, uses both the GPS satellite network to determine a customer’s location and the SPOT network to transmit that information to friends, family or an emergency service center. Nytro – The Fix Is In!

0

By: Kent Lester

We’ve been anxious to get the ’09 Nytro out on snow to see if all the work Yamaha did to it this summer really makes a difference.

To further mess up our minds, Yamaha got our 2009 press Nytro mixed up and we haven’t had our own to play with yet.

We borrowed a ride on a Nytro from SnowTrax Television this weekend and were really impressed with it.

Last year, the sled darted and hunted on trails like a bloodhound on hamburger.

The condition was especially bad when riding on the kinds of trails we’re getting in Haliburton County this time of year – hardpacked, frozen, ice based trails with lots of ruts used to make this sled jump around until it felt like the bars were going to rip out of your hands.

This year, the front end is completely settled and, although the skis still aren’t the greatest, it handles very predictably and is comfortable to run down frozen trails at all speeds.

The motor is as sweet as ever and with the front end working so well, you really get a feeling of confidence riding the Nytro.

We’re glad we chose this as one of our Best in Class choices this year!

Huge Canterbury Crowd Witness Hibbert Romp

Press Release –

Hibbert Continues His Unbeaten Streak; Tremblay Nabs Victory for Ski-doo in Semi-Pro

With one of the biggest crowds on hand in over ten-years at Canterbury Park, Tucker Hibbert (Arctic Cat) continued his season unbeaten streak in the Pro ranks with two driving away victories.

Fans also got a taste of the new one-day three-hour main event format, which featured an all-final show with back to back to back Pro and Semi-Pro finals.

Tucker Drives Away Twice for Victory in Pro-Open Final

With his unbeaten streak on the line and the competitors hungry to end it, Tucker foiled their efforts once again by gaining the lead on the first lap by overcoming the holeshot lead of fellow Cat rider Brett Turcotte and proceeding to check-out.

In his wake, a swarm of Polaris red lead by Levi LaVallee, DJ Eckstrom and Ross Martin followed Turcotte.

In the early laps, DJ went wide and off the track, shuffling him back in the pack while TJ Gulla (Pol), picked off Malinoski and settling in to the fifth place position.

The running order remained Tucker, Turcotte, LaVallee, Martin and Gulla until lap 13, when Martin and Levi began to battle for the third place position, swapping the spot several times over the course of five laps.

The grueling 26 lap final was prolonged when Robbie Malinoski who was running sixth at the time, had an off on lap 19 forcing a red flag and a single file restart for the remaining 7 laps.

With the field tightened up, the chance for Tucker to be knocked off his game was on once again, but a clean restart put Tucker in the clear for the win. A late lap charge by Gulla put the finishing order at the flag Tucker, Turcotte, Gulla, LaVallee and Martin.

Kaufman Shows His Stamina While Tucker Pulls Away in Pro-Open

In Pro-Super Stock a melee’ immediately following the start set the stage as Ryan Simons, TJ Gulla, Ross Martin and Andrew Johnstad, all legitimate podium contenders, were forced to regroup and/or re-tether and work from deep behind the leaders.

That set the stage for another Tucker Hibbert victory, continuing his unbeaten streak for the season and further securing his points lead.

At the close of the first lap of the 26 lap final, it was Tucker edging out Polaris pilots Levi LaVallee and Brett Bender with Garth Kaufman (Cat), DJ Eckstrom (Pol), Brett Turcotte (Cat) and Shaun Crapo (Pol) rounding out the seven riders in the 16 rider field.

The running order remained consistent for over half the race, as Tucker began to checkout and encountered back runners on lap nine.

While the Tucker Hibbert show continued at the front, it was Garth Kaufman who perhaps put on the second most impressive ride of the night, as he slowly edged towards the front, picking off Bender on lap 16 and then having an impressive battle with Levi during the closing laps.

The two swap the bridesmaid position several times during the closing laps, with Kaufman eventually getting the bouquet. At the line is was Tucker, who lapped every sled in the field except the top four riders, followed by Kaufman, LaVallee, Bender and Eckstrom to complete the top five.

Tremblay Scores a Victory for Ski-doo in Semi-Pro Super Stock

In Semi-Pro, the ride of the weekend came from Ski-doo pilot Tim Tremblay, who gave Ski-doo their first major win of the season with an impressive ride, charging from fifth place after the close of the first lap, and taking the checkered in front of Dan Ebert (Cat) and Derek Ellis (Pol) at the line.

Notably missing from the top finishers was early season podium regular and Swedish standout, Christian Salemark who experienced an early race get-off and failed to return to the race.

In what proved to be one of the most exciting races of the evening, a series of battles shaped up early as Dan Ebert held the lead with Alaskan rider Cory Davis also on an Arctic Cat; Mike Bauer on a Polaris; and Derek Ellis also on a Polaris tightly in tow.

By lap eight, Davis made the pass on teammate Ebert and looked to be the clear winner of the race as the laps began to wind down. However, a mechanical on the second to last lap, opened the door for the hard-charging Tremblay.

Taylor Carlson Finishes Second in Pro-Women

Press Release –

Andrew Battles Through Poor Starts to Qualify for Two of Three Finals and Captures 6th in Semi-Pro Open; Chris Carlson Wins Plus 40 Class

Team Sportech was back in competition this past weekend in ISOC Minnesota Regional action in Fertile, Minnesota.

A winter storm, which rolled in Saturday, brought snow and limited visibility but didn’t hamper the efforts of Team Sportech on the track as the family of racers qualified for five of six finals and scored two podiums.

Taylor Carlson once again proved she is an up and coming force in the Pro-Women ranks, as she competed with National Pro riders and came away with second place honors.

A strong round of qualifying including one heat race win earned her the number two position in the final behind the always fast and national level competitor Carly Davis.

When the green dropped, Taylor pulled a monster holeshot aboard her HMK, FOX Racing Shox Arctic Cat, and rode a strong and consistent race. Taylor was rewarded with a second place finish at the line behind Davis.

“Every weekend I’m improving and most importantly gaining confidence,” said Taylor after the final. “I was nervous before the season started about making the jump to the pro ranks, but I’ve proved I can run with the best in the nation and I know a top place finish is within reach this season.”

Taylor’s teammate, Andrew displayed his mental toughness as he overcame some poor starts in the Semi-Pro field, but still made the finals in two of three classes.

Andrew’s strongest showing of the weekend came in the ultra competitive Semi-Pro Open division where the young Carlson charged from the back row and passed half the field to earn a hard fought 6th place finish.

“I struggled off the line this weekend,” Andrew said. “We’ve got the equipment and support to perform, it’s now up to me to improve my starts. I know what I’ll be working on all week before we head to Canterbury for the ISOC Nationals. I’m determined to be first into turn one next weekend.”

For team manager Chris Carlson, the weekend was once again a busy one, as he manages the racing efforts of Andrew and Taylor and still finds time to compete in the Plus 40 and Plus 30 classes. Chris took the top spot in the Plus 40 division and a second place overall in the Plus 30 behind Karl Christian.

Team Sportech will compete next on the ISOC National stage in Shakopee, Minnesota during the Air Force National, January 9-11.

Polaris 800 Rocks But Eats Stock Plugs

0

By: Kent Lester

We’re super-impressed with the ’09 IQ’s power but we’ve experienced some plug fouling with it after 200 miles.

We’ve checked and some other riders are getting the same problem. It doesn’t seem to be a major issue at this time but some dealers are suggesting moving to a slightly hotter (one heat range) plug.

The fouling only occurs when the engine gets some miles on and is hot, so carry some spares in your pocket and bring your tool kit.

Other than this issue, we can’t fault the IQ 800. We have a Switchback and a standard 800 and both get decent mileage and run very strong.

This mill’s calling card is relentless torque, so you’ll be tempted to dip into the flipper a lot.

The IQ chassis in both track lengths, is comfortable to sit on, handles like it’s on rails and rides better than we expected, considering it’s a sled in the ultra-high performance range.
