TIM HORTONS GEORGIAN CUP RESULTS

Press Release –

Victoria Park in Owen Sound played host to the Tim Horton’s Georgian Cup, Round #4 in the Canadian Snowcross Racing series. After being postponed from its original date due to a lack of snow, the Georgian Cup certainly didn’t disappoint. Hundreds of loads of snow arrived at the park leading up to the event which allowed for a great track to be laid out in front of the grandstands, featuring lots of air time making it a spectator and racer favourite.

Semi-Pro Open was first on the track for Saturday’s feature events. #217 Sean Macaulay (Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo) got out front and held off his hard charging competitors to take the win ahead of #333 Jeremy Van Dolder (Ski-Doo) who finished second. #219 Jamie Byers (Supertrax/Byers Motorsports Polaris) followed behind Van Dolder to secure the final position on the podium in third place.

When the Pro racers took to the track for the Pro Stock final it was local racer #999 Michael Van Dolder (Dayco/Ski-Doo) leading the pack. Fans were on their feet as they watched their hometown hero lead the rest of the class around the track holding onto the front position for the first half of the race. #115 David Joanis (Bourque’s Polaris) eventually caught up and put the pressure on Van Dolder, and was soon joined by #73 Lee Butler (Royal Distributing/Factory Recreation Ski-Doo) who worked his way up from mid-pack to make it a three-way battle for first.

With only a handful of laps left to go, Joanis made his move and passed Van Dolder for the lead eventually settling in for the win. Van Dolder finished second place followed by Butler in third.

On Sunday, the Semi-Pro’s took to the track for the Semi-Pro Stock final. Off the start it was #381 J.B Dennis who took a strong lead. Unfortunately for Dennis, it would turn out to be short-lived as he sent himself cart wheeling along the rhythm section in front of the grandstands. A dazed and obviously frustrated Dennis walked off the track watching #333 Jeremy Van Dolder take over as the leader.

After Dennis’ crash, Van Dolder started to pull away from the rest of the pack as a heated battle for second took place behind him. #101 Andre Gervais, up from the Sport class, was doing everything he could to hold on to his current position in second place and hold off #287 Jeff Sanftenberg and #511 Jaymie McPhail. At the checkered flag it was #333 Jeremy Van Dolder (Ski-Doo) taking the win at his hometown race, followed by #101 Andre Gervais in second and #287 Jeff Sanftenberg in third. The race all the fans sat through the cold for, The Pro Open, took to the track next and it was filled with excitement.

The race had to be red-flagged after the start due to a crash following the first corner that left #202 Joey Sagan out of the race. With a complete re-start, it was Rockstar racer #73 Lee Butler taking the holeshot and disappearing from the rest of the pack with a considerable lead. 111J was near the front from the start but started to fade, allowing for both #98 Michael Island and #115 David Joanis to move past Orr and challenge #999 Michael Van Dolder for second place.

Island and Van Dolder battled back and forth for a number of laps before Island eventually made the pass for second place. At the finish line it was #73 Lee Butler (Royal Distributing/Factory Recreation Ski-Doo) taking first place with #98 Michael Island (Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo) in second and #999 Michael Van Dolder (Dayco/Ski-Doo) rounding out the top three.

In the Pro Women’s class it was once again # 55 Angela Vacchino (Team Shorline/Arctic Cat) who got out front from the start and never looked back, taking her third overall win of the season. #111S Stacey Orr (Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo) took second place ahead of Sport Women racer, #777 Caley Weese who battled hard with #318W Brittany Thompson for the third and final spot on the podium.

Polaris Acquires swissauto Powersports

Press Release –

Expertise from Switzerland-based Company will enhance Polaris’ engineering capabilities and broaden geographic reach

Polaris Industries Inc. (NYSE: PII) today announced its acquisition of swissauto Powersports. Based in Burgdorf, Switzerland, swissauto has expertise in designing and developing high-performance and high-efficiency engines and innovative vehicles.

The acquisition will further strengthen Polaris’ global engine and vehicle design capability while also enhancing the company’s European presence.

Founded in 1987, swissauto’s core capabilities are in development, prototyping and manufacturing of internal combustion engines. Polaris has a long history of working with swissauto. The high-performance, four-stroke Weber engine that Polaris uses in several current snowmobile models was developed by swissauto.

In addition to recreational vehicle engines, swissauto also has a strong tradition of developing top-tier racing engines for World Motorcycle GP. The company’s V4 2-stroke 500 cc engine drove 29 wins, 41 Poles and 3 World Championships during the 1990s.

A completely new racing bike was also developed by swissauto and competed aggressively against larger Japanese OEMs during the late 1990s. This bike achieved the pole position twice during it’s first season of racing and ranked in the top ten several times.

“Swissauto has industry leading powertrain design and development capabilities and a strong understanding of turbo-charging and high-performance engines,” said Polaris Chief Executive Officer, Scott Wine. “This acquisition directly supports our stated objectives to be the best in powersports and a global market leader.”

Polaris acquired the powersports portion of swissauto and will continue to operate in the current swissauto facility located in Burgdorf, Switzerland. The automotive division of swissauto was not involved in this acquisition and will continue to operate autonomously.

TEAM ARCTIC’S TUCKER HIBBERT 4-PEATS AT X GAMES

Press Release –

Cross-Country Team Wins Nine Classes at USCC Red Lake 200

If there were any doubt about who would win the ESPN Winter X Games Snocross final in Aspen, Colo., Tucker Hibbert set the record straight with his fourth-straight gold medal performance in the sport’s most visible event. Racing his Team Arctic/Monster Energy Arctic Cat Sno Pro 600, Hibbert turned the 20-lap final into his personal tour de force, winning by 28 seconds over second place.

The gold-medal-winning ride was Hibbert’s fifth career win at the made-for-TV event, and marked his ninth medal since he first won the event in 2000.

Hibbert lead a dominating performance by Team Arctic racers at the X Games. Ryan Simons (Team Arctic/Christian Bros. Racing) earned a bronze medal, while Team Arctic/Sportech’s Paul Bauerly finished fifth.

Cory Davis, Garth Kaufman and Dan Ebert also reached the final, bolstering Team Arctic’s impressive performance. Arctic Cat engineer Jeff Tweet also represented Arctic Cat at the X Games, racing the Adaptive Snocross event on the Monster Energy Cat.

While the snocross contingent hauled the most hardware at the X Games, Team Arctic’s cross-country team delivered solid results at the USCC Red Lake 200 in Red Lake, Minn., including nine class victories.

Team Arctic racer and Arctic Cat engineer Brian Dick nailed second place finishes in both Pro 600 and Pro Open classes at the two-day event, while his Christian Bros. Racing teammate D.J. Ekre went for the Ironman award, taking third in both Pro classes and winning the Expert 85 class.

A continuing story at USCC cross-country events is the large entries in the 85-hp classes, where the new Arctic Cat Sno Pro 500 has proven exceedingly capable. At the Red Lake 200, Arctic Cat Sno Pro 500s claimed the top-10 positions in Expert 85 and the top-12 in Sport 85.

“This was another great weekend for Team Arctic,” said Race Manager Mike Kloety.

“Tucker’s emphatic win at the X Games was as impressive as ever, and Ryan’s third place finish, combined with four other teammates in the final, made it a strong showing.”

“At the Red Lake 200 we showed the depth of our team by winning nine classes. This was the first cross-country this season where we didn’t win Pro 600 or Semi Pro 600, but we were close. And to see the growth of the 85-hp classes proves that our Sno Pro 500 has been a huge hit.”

The next National snocross race for Team Arctic is Feb. 5-6 in Farmington, NY while the next cross-country is Feb. 13 in Grand Forks, ND.

SnoBarons Named Snowmobile Club of the Year

Press Release –

No other snowmobile club has achieved the level of excellence the SnoBarons of Blaine, MN have when it comes to producing a nationally recognized major snowmobile event.

Their Haydays event in September kicks off the snowmobile season, not only in Minnesota but also nationally as hundreds of vendors and tens of thousands of snowmobilers pack the show grounds. Proceeds from the event have been parceled out to scores of clubs for snowmobile projects benefiting the sport.

In recognition of their achievements, the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame (ISHOF), located in Eagle River, WI, is proud to name the SnoBarons as the first annual recipient of their Snowmobile Club of the Year Award.

The announcement was made official by ISHOF president, Scott Eilertson, at the SnoBarons Christmas party last month.

“ISHOF is very excited to create this new annual award and to name the SnoBarons as the first recipient. They are truly an inspiration to all clubs and the grand sport of snowmobiling,” stated Eilertson.

The official presentation will be made this fall at the Induction Ceremony held in Eagle River as they induct the International Snowmobile Hall of Fame class of 2010, the International Groomer of the Year award, sponsored by Arctic Cat and the new Snowmobile Club of the Year award.

Pemberton Backcountry Adventure

0

By Mike Lester

If you caught the show this week, you no doubt saw just how beautiful Pemberton British Columbia Canada is. Believe me, Matt Schween is a wizard behind the lens and was able to capture the wonder of this experience almost as closely as actually being there. That amazing sunset you saw – no Photoshop there, it was the real deal. Matt jumped out of the truck and sprinted out into a field to record that while he and Luke were enroute to ride with Geoff Kyle early that morning.

Meanwhile, I took the day off, got a 90-minute deep tissue massage at Connections from my new friend Sarah Curtis. Yeah, it was a lazy day for me, but Luke and Matt had the experience of a lifetime.

I had my time on the mountain though – for 2 days actually. Ray Mason of Totally Awesome adventures hooked me up with a new Summit 600 E-TEC and Luke borrowed an M8 Sno Pro from Mark Hamilton at Route 99 Motorsports and we hit the hill for the most insane riding experience of my life.

I’ve honestly never ridden in powder like this and Ray showed us all the best places to ride making sure we were totally safe and on the occasions we did get stuck, made sure we got out. This trip wouldn’t have been what it was without Ray or Mark riding with us.

Another great experience, was hanging out in Mark Hamilton’s garage with Geoff Kyle and his girlfriend installing the graphics kit to Geoff’s sled while Luke and Matty did interviews upstairs. I was so nervous I was going to mess up the stickers, but Geoff was totally cool about it. He’s a class act and for anyone in the film industry looking for the most insane backcountry rider Hollywood has ever seen, give this guy a call.

If you’re planning a trip to Pemberton, reach out to Ray Mason and set up a guided tour of the mountains. I highly recommend it. It will enhance your experience and he’ll ride to your skill level and show you places that will blow your mind – Plus he’s a cool guy to hang with for a day too.

Stay at Pemberton Valley Lodge while you’re in town. We had a suite, complete with 2 bathrooms a kitchen and a living room. Following your ride, visit Sarah Curtis at Connections to ease your sore muscles too. Get a couple buddies together and this could be the adventure of a lifetime.

My heart-felt thanks go out to Ray and his wife, Mark, Sarah, Geoff Kyle and of course to Tracey Rozsypalek from Tourism Pemberton for all her hard work in getting us to BC, hooking up the digs and for packing our lunches each day to take on the mountain.

Visit every link below and book now. Pemberton rocks.

Podium for Hayden in Lindsay, ON

Press Release –

Team Monster Energy-Yamaha-OTSFF Racing’s Iain Hayden continues to lead the CSRA Pro Open Snowcross Championship, after recording a noteworthy second place finish at Round 2 of the points chase this past weekend in Lindsay, Ontario.

After racing a double-header at Eagle River, WI in the United States the week before, things were a little more relaxed for Hayden and the team as they raced back on home soil.

Hayden arrived at the Lindsay Exhibition Grounds to contest the Amsoil Kawartha Cup with a slim three point lead in the title hunt. When all was said and done, he finished in the top-two in all three races and stretched his lead to a more comfortable 10 points.

In his first full season on the Canadian circuit since 2007, Hayden is on solid footing to add another CSRA championship title to his laurels. He basically did what he had to do and that’s to keep adding double-digit points to his lead. The Espanola, ON native took his four-stroke Yamaha FX Nytro to a second place finish in his first qualifying heat, a win in the second heat, and runner-up in the final.

His solid performance in the qualifiers gave Hayden a lucrative second pick on the front row for the all important final. That position, however, turned into a slot on the back row, after a too eager Hayden jumped the start.

Although he had only 12 laps to redeem himself, Hayden got on the gas after the restart and systematically began picking off rider and after rider in a caution flag marred race, to knife his way towards the front. By the end of the race, he had claimed second place but ran out of time to reel in the win.

“It was hard to make any kind of headway, because there were so many crashes out there with cautions for what seemed to be at least half the race. It was more or less follow the leader with here and there an opportunity to pass,” said Hayden. “Still, I can’t complain seeing I managed to keep my points lead intact. It was a good event with a lot of fans coming out to see the action. And the team did another great job that allowed me to get the maximum performance out of my Nytro FX. The Hindle Exhaust system we’re running has really helped towards that end.”

TEAM ARCTIC PRO SWEEP AT CANTERBURY SNOCROSS

Press Release –

For the first time this year – and perhaps the first time ever – one brand of snowmobile swept all four Pro classes at a National snocross, and won six classes at the RMSHA Hillclimb. It’s little surprise that Team Arctic owns the honor.

Once again, Team Arctic/Monster Energy legend Tucker Hibbert dominated the Pro Stock and Open classes. Yet it was his amazing eighth-to-first run in Open – the result of a poor start – that produced the most dramatic final in years and brought the partisan crowd to its feet. The win gives Hibbert terrific momentum heading into the upcoming ESPN X Games competition.

Joining Hibbert on the Pro Stock podium and X Games short-list is this year’s breakout racer, Factory Team Arctic’s Dan Ebert. Fresh off his brilliant win in the I-500 the week prior, Ebert carried his confidence and speed to win both heat races and take second in the Pro Stock final – his second such National snocross finish this season.

Nailing a wicked holeshot and skying the big double-jumps, last year’s ISOC Champion, Carly Davis, won her first Pro Women final of the season and served notice she’s intent to defend her class title. Likewise, Joshua Zelinski won his first Pro Plus 35 final of the season, making it a sweep of the Pro classes for Team Green.

Team Arctic’s Canterbury winning also extended to other classes, the most impressive of which was Logan Christian’s stunning run in the Semi Pro Open class. With a fifth-place start to contend with, Christian pounded out a series of Pro class lap times to take the lead, and then win the star-studded final.

Christian was on his way to winning the Semi Pro Stock #2 final when an out-of-control competitor crashed in front of him, forcing Christian to stop and get his sled unstuck. Following the melee, Christian rebounded to take sixth, while Factory Team Arctic’s Cody Thomsen found his way to second overall.

And scoring a heartfelt win in Junior 10-14 was Tyler Adams, who combined hard work and solid skills to win his first race of the season.

“We’re pleased to win all four Pro Classes and one Semi Pro final,” said Team Arctic Race Manager, Mike Kloety. “And had we not suffered from a couple miscues in the Semi Pro Stock classes, it looked as though we’d have won both of those. But that’s racing, and it’s why our riders will return more hungry to win the next one.”

Team Arctic racers also claimed six class wins at the opening race of the RMSHA hillclimb series in Preston, Idaho. Competing with the formidable M Series snowmobiles, Team Arctic racers claimed wins in Stock, Improved and Open mod classes, from the 600-800 engine classes, while getting a good shakedown of their machines.

RUSH Wins Pro Class & Team Titles in USCC I-500

Press Release –

Gabe Bunke Wins Pro Open & Team RUSH Wins Fastest Team Honors

The snowmobile that delivers the ultimate in Terrain Dominating Control, the Polaris 600 RUSH, is proving to be a winner on the race course as well as on the trail.

Polaris cross-country racer Gabe Bunke rode a Polaris 600 RUSH to victory in the Pro Open class and the team title during the United States Cross Country (USCC) Red Lake I-500 held in northwestern Minnesota on January 15-17.

The 600 RUSH is the snowmobile industry’s best-selling new sled for model year 2010, so performance-minded recreational riders are enjoying the Terrain Dominating Control of its PRO-RIDE Chassis on the trails and in the ditches.

A race-tuned version of this popular sled carried Bunke to second place overall in the I-500, where the appropriately named “Team RUSH” won the team title. The winning team consisted of 600 RUSH riders Jeff Klein, Chad Colby and Bunke.

In this year’s Red Lake I-500, the racers ran approximately 170 miles per day for three straight days. After the first day of racing, Bunke was seventh in the Pro 600 standings and fifth among Pro Open racers. The combination of his strong, steady racing style and the 600 RUSH moved him up the leader chart on day two, when he finished fifth in the Pro 600 standings and second in Pro Open.

On the final day, Bunke raced as hard as possible in flat light that made the terrain difficult to read, and he posted a time strong enough to give him the Pro Open win and put him second in Pro 600.

Fellow Polaris racer Aaron Christensen of Metiskow, Alberta, Canada, finished third in Pro Open. In the Pro 600 class, Christensen was fifth, Jesse Thelen of St. Martin, Minnesota, was seventh, Paul Anderson of Lewiston, Minnesota, came home 12th, and Doug Cymbaluk of Crookston, Minnesota, finished 14th.

Polaris racer Dennis Topp of Baudette, Minnesota, won the Legends 50+ class and Anderson finished second.

In Semi-Pro 600, Dustin Holmstrom of Newfolden, Minnesota, finished second and Jeff Ignaszewski of Wells, MN, was third. Ryan Faust of Rubicon, WI, finished seventh in Semi-Pro 600 and second in Semi-Pro Improved

Bunke Still Running Strong

At age 33, Bunke is as much as a decade older than many of his fellow racers, but he continues to deliver consistently strong performances that put him in the thick of the USCC points battle. Last season he received the USCC Iron Man award for having raced at every USCC event to date (43 consecutive races at the time). In last season’s final USCC points standings, Bunke was second in Pro 600 points and fifth in Pro Open. He is also a two-time winner of the Soo I-500.

A Polaris racer for all 13 years of his career, Bunke is playing a key role in fine-tuning the cross-country race setup of the 600 RUSH. After strong finishes on the 600 RUSH in the first two USCC races this season, he is the Pro points leader.

600 RUSH on the PRO-RIDE Chassis

The Polaris PRO-RIDE Chassis is the only snowmobile with true progressive rate rear suspension. 600 RUSH recreational riders and cross-country racers experience the ability to ride through bumps like a motocrosser because the progressive-rate rear suspension isolates the rider from the impact. The PRO-RIDE suspension gets progressively stiffer through its travel for a smoother, more controlled ride and protects against bottoming out on big bumps. The result is that riders are spared the “spine tinglers” conventional suspensions can deliver at the bottom of their travel.

Schultz Earns Run-Away Victory in Eagle River

Press Release –

Wausau, WI, Racer Leads Flag-to-Flag on Polaris-Powered Race Sled

Polaris oval racer Matt Schultz showed the field his snowflap as he used Polaris performance to lead from green flag to checkered and win the World Championship at the 47th Eagle River [WI] World Championship Snowmobile Derby on January 17.

Schultz got a blisteringly fast start on his Larry Rugland Motorsports race sled with a race-prepped Polaris engine and led all 25 laps.

“[Crew Chief] Al [Fenhaus] did a great job with the clutching and we got the holeshot,” Schultz said. “We just got out front and never looked back. We just kept digging. It feels rally good to bring one back for Polaris and bring one back for Wausau.”

Polaris Racing Manager Tom Rager, Sr., said Schultz’s decisive win came against some outstanding competition.

“I thought he had a really good chance to win the thing, but I knew we had to get out in front of [three-time former champion] P.J. Wanderscheid,” Rager said. “I kept waiting because P.J. is in such great shape, he always makes a late charge. But I had a stop watch and every time they would go by, Matt was opening up his lead a little bit more. It’s been a long dry spell. This was an unbelievable win.”

It was an emotional victory, too, because of Schultz’s ties to his crew chief and because he couldn’t race at Eagle River in 2009. He broke his neck in a racing crash the week before the 2009 Eagle River Derby and attended the World Championship as a spectator, wearing a stabilizing halo device. Thus, it was rewarding for him simply to get to compete at Eagle River this year.

Fenhaus, the 1993 World Championship winner and Schultz’s crew chief, teared up following the World Championship win because Schultz is his nephew and racing has strengthened the bond between the two men.

“Matt was a little boy when I won it here. He was always looking up to me and I knew it was something that he wanted to do,” Fenhaus told Snow Goer magazine after the race.

“Al’s probably like my second dad,” Schultz said. “I probably talk to him more than I talk to my dad. I talk to him two or three times a day, and then work with him at his shop. This is what we work all year for.”

Schultz, who lives in Wausau, WI, is the first Wisconsin driver to win the World Championship since 1995. The winner of the first-ever Eagle River World Championship in 1964 was also an in-state racer – and a Polaris rider. The first champ was then-eighth-grader Stan Hayes of Crandon, WI, who won that first race on a 12-hp Polaris and received a modest trophy. Schultz, the latest in a long line of Polaris champions, won the 2010 title with over 10 times the horsepower of Hayes’ sled, and he received $20,000 for the win. He also won the Formula 1 Open 600 title during Derby weekend.

Two Wahl Bros. Racing teammates from Greenbush, Minnesota, joined Schultz in the World Championship top 10 on their Polaris-powered race sleds. Dustin Wahl finished fourth and Brandon Johnson finished seventh.

In other oval classes at Eagle River, Polaris racer Beau Van Strydonk of Tomahawk, WI, won the Pro Sprint 600 title.

Polaris Engines Show Their Muscle
Sleds powered by Polaris engines posted the top three World Championship qualifying times. Schultz posted a lap time of 17.813 seconds at an average speed of 74.777 mph, followed by Nicholas Van Strydonk with a 17.833-seocnd lap at 74,693 mph. Dustin Wahl on his Polaris-powered Wahl Bros. race sled was third-fastest in qualifying with a lap time of 18.148 seconds, giving him an average speed of 73.397 for the lap.

Polaris Racers Win Snocross Titles

During the special nighttime racing under the lights on January 15, Polaris snocross racers dominated, winning both Pro classes and finishing 1-2-3 in Pro Super Stock.

Polaris racer Andrew Johnstad (AMSOIL/Air Force/Makita) won Pro Open and Robbie Malinoski (AMSOIL/Air Force/Makita) was second. They reversed that finishing order in Pro Super Stock, where Malinoski won, Johnstad was second and Andrew Lieders (Lieders Racing) finished third.

In snocross racing on January 17, Malinoski finished second in Pro Open and third in Pro Super Stock, where Johnstad finished second.
