2012 BEST IN CLASS: BEST NEW SLED TECHNOLOGY

0

WINNER: ARCTIC CAT TORQUE CONTROL LINK

KENT’S TAKE:

Sometimes, the best ideas are the ones that just make you slap your face and say: “Why didn’t anybody think of that before?” It’s that way with Cat’s new Torque Control Link.

Here’s what’s so cool about TCL: While a snowmobile engine is spooling up RPM, it moves on its rubber mounts considerably. This means the distance between the primary clutch and the secondary is not constant at different levels of acceleration. This deflection is hard on belts and produces a rubbery, inconsistent “wind-up” that robs power.

With TCL, by creating a solid, unmovable link between the engine, the secondary clutch and the jackshaft, all the torque motion is transferred into the chain case and drive system.

TCL still allows the engine to be rubber mounted to reduce vibes but there’s a floating bearing on the chain case side of the jackshaft to deal with the movement of the engine and jackshaft.

Since everything stays constant on the PTO side, belt deflection is always the same. This is such a simple idea it took a genius to figure it out.

Roger Skime and his team dreamed this up and the idea could be as revolutionary to the snowmobile industry as the slide rail suspension. Yeah, guess who thought that one up, too.

RUNNER UP: SKI-DOO rMOTION

MARK SAYS:

This was a tricky category. I frankly was torn between these two breakthroughs myself. Each one has significant merit. However, I think building an in-tunnel suspension system operating on a full rising rate ratio at the shock is pretty doggone impressive.

This skid raises the bar significantly providing the best all round, no compromise, lightweight ride ever recorded by this particular editor.

What is very strange here is how the rMotion completely collapses into the tunnel, actually allowing the running boards to come within millimeters of white top.

Thus, the XP’s remarkable low CG handling is completely unaffected while ride compliance rises to an as yet unavailable level of plush.

Here’s where the rMotion aces this category: Its remote, running board mounted preload and compression clickers.

Finally, we have the first true, easy to adjust, completely tool-less, sled-flat-on-the-ground preload adjustment system.

Using a tiny, stubby hydraulic cylinder and a running board mounted threaded pump allows riders to adjust preload to suit both weight and trail conditions in the blink of an eye. That’s bonafide revolutionary in my books.

Okay, I get Arctic Cat’s TCL is important, however rMotion is more important in the real world of moguls and washboard.

Snowmobile hillclimb champion Keith Curtis will join backcountry riding expert Chris Burandt in developing a signature line of specialized, premium-quality snowmobile apparel and gear for Polaris.

Curtis, who will be sponsored by Polaris as he competes in Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hillclimb Association events this coming winter, will develop his signature line of snowmobile apparel and gear during the coming winter, and it will be available to riders for the winter of 2013-2014.

A Chris Burandt Collection of accessories and goggles is available now at Polaris snowmobile dealers and www.purepolaris.com. Additional products are being developed to expand the Burandt line for the winter of 2013-2014.

POLARIS PARTNERS WITH KEITH CURTIS

Curtis and Polaris have entered into a partnership in which Polaris apparel, accessories, and oil will sponsor Curtis and his KC 711 Racing team, and Curtis will work with Polaris product developers to create a signature line of apparel and gear that enhance riders’ snowmobiling experience.

“Polaris is a brand known for premium quality, high-performance gear, and it’s fitting that we partner with a champion of the stature of Keith Curtis to expand our product offerings,” said Pure Polaris Vice President Steve Eastman. “We look forward to backing Keith as he pursues additional championships, and are excited to have him join Chris Burandt in developing a signature line of premium gear.”

Curtis approaches the upcoming Rocky Mountain Snowmobile Hillclimb Association (RMSHA) season with high hopes for another outstanding winter.

Last season he won RMSHA season points titles in Pro 600 Stock, Pro 800 Stock, Pro 1000 Stock, and Pro 800 Modified. He finished second in Pro 800 Improved Stock points and was the circuit’s Stock King of the Hill at every event.

Since Curtis has joined the RMSHA and become a factory Polaris rider he has amassed 90 wins, 27 King of the Hill titles, and 20 year-end points championships.

At the 2012 Jackson Hole World Championship Snowmobile Hill Climb, the sport’s premier event, Curtis won three class titles and the Stock King of the Hill title.

As Curtis rides, practices and competes this winter, he will be developing a signature line of apparel and gear that will provide riders and racers with the best in performance, durability and reliability.

The Polaris Keith Curtis Signature Collection will be introduced in the spring of 2013 and available at dealerships and online in the fall.

CHRIS BURANDT COLLECTION TO EXPAND

Last winter Pure Polaris introduced the Chris Burandt Collection of gear that was developed, tested, and approved by the backcountry riding master. The Burandt Collection includes accessories and goggles for Polaris snowmobiles and riders.

The collection features innovative, premium-quality accessories for avid mountain riders. The Burandt Lock & Ride Tunnel Bag by OGIO can be installed and removed in seconds without tools, and Burandt HD PowderTrac Running Boards provide a rider with strong, lightweight boards that evacuate snow instantly.

The Burandt Signature Windshield and colorful Burandt Signature Wraps by Arctic FX infuse a sled with extra style, and the Burandt Hand Saw is a handy, efficient accessory for backcountry riders.

As Burandt spends countless hours riding in the backcountry, filming extreme riding videos and leading riders on his Chris Burandt Backcountry Tours in Colorado, he will continue developing new products for his signature collection.

Additional products will be introduced in the spring of 2013 and available in the fall.

Salute To Rager Sr. on Approaching Retirement

0

A highly successful chapter in the history of the Polaris snowmobile racing program is nearing an end as Polaris Racing Manager Tom Rager, Sr., prepares for retirement at year’s end. Rager, who joined Polaris in August 2000 and has directed the racing program ever since, will be succeeded by his son, Tom Rager, Jr., who currently serves as Polaris Race Coordinator.

“It’s been a great career,” said the elder Rager. “I’ve watched my son grow and develop and he’s ready to take this thing on. He has worked hard.”

So has Tom Rager, Sr., who joined Polaris after spending over 15 years with the Ski-doo snowmobile racing program, including the final seven years as race manager. He has earned the respect of everyone in the industry, including owners of Polaris racing teams who have benefited from Rager’s ability to nurture a “farm system” of young racers who climb the ranks and become successful Pro racers.

“I think he’s the best race director in the business, hands down, no question about it,” said Scott Judnick, co-owner with his wife Colleen of Judnick Motorsports, a Polaris racing team for the past 11 years. “[Former Polaris CEO Tom] Tiller and [former GM Snowmobiles] Bob Nygaard knew what they were doing getting Tom, Sr., to come on board. They wanted to win and they wanted the best and knew what Sr. could bring to the table. Look at how the program has dominated for such a long time.”

Rager, Sr., joined Polaris along with his team of Racing Coordinator Bill Rader and Tom Rager, Jr., who originally focused on race sled technology and has remained a race team crew chief until this winter. The three formed a highly successful team known for treating teams fairly, successfully recruited young racers and helping to develop outstanding race sleds.

“We got involved with quality people like the Judnick and Hentges teams and Tim Bender, and we started building the program,” said Rager, Sr. “Then [the Polaris snowmobiling engineering team in] Roseau came through and built pretty much everything we wanted. The problem initially was that we were fighting with the [Ski-doo] REV [sled], which had just come out, but boy the guys in Roseau came through and built us a sled. Holy buckets, it’s still a good sled.”

Getting young terrain racers on Polaris sleds helped build a feeder program of future Pro racers.

“We just kept feeding the program and we knew in three, four years we were going to have a good crop,” Rager, Sr. said. “It’s fun to see success throughout the whole program, including terrain, ovals and hillclimb.”

“The whole thing that leads to success is surrounding yourself with the right people. We’ve got a tremendous team, in my mind. The race teams are the heart and soul of the whole program. We’re very careful about bringing a new race team on with Polaris, and they usually don’t leave.”

Among the highlights Rager, Sr., recalled from his years with Polaris was Carl Schibutzke scoring the first Pro victory for Polaris in a National snocross event in 2002 at Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota. He also cherishes the first snocross points title ever won by a Polaris racer, TJ Gulla’s 2004-2005 Pro Stock championship.

Among the few low points during Rager’s dozen years with Polaris was Bill Rader’s battle with cancer and his passing away in February 2012. The two had been best friends for nearly 20 years, and coming to work without Rader around changed the landscape for the elder Rager.

“It hasn’t been the same for Sr. since Bill got sick and Bill passed away,” said Rager, Jr. “It’s not the same vibe for him.”

Rager, Jr., has seen his father’s leadership and accomplishments from up close.

“It’s going to be different without Sr.,” said his son. “The sport is going to miss him. I’m going to miss him. I’m lucky that I have such a legend in the sport that I can always go to for advice. I certainly plan on seeing him and spending a lot of time with him, even when he’s retired. The goal is to make this transition as smooth as possible.”

At year’s end, Rager, Jr., will assume the title of Polaris Racing Manager and his team will include Ben Hayes and Tony Swiontek, both of whom have been instrumental in development of successful Polaris race sleds and providing technical expertise to teams in every racing discipline.

Scott Judnick said of Rager, Sr.: “It’s going to be very hard for me to see him go and we’re going to miss him, but Jr. and his team are ready and they’re excited.”

“I think Jr. is going to do an outstanding job,” said Polaris snocross racer and team owner Levi LaVallee. “I was fortunate to have Jr. as my mechanic in my first year as a Pro and got to know him well. He has learned from the best and been side by side with his dad through everything. He’ll step right in and take off from where Tom, Sr., left the Polaris race department.”

LaVallee is among the many racers whose careers have developed under Tom Rager, Sr.

“Tom has been key in my career and in the careers of tons of other riders,” LaVallee said. “He’s really kind of like a father figure to the guys related to the racing department… He’s a really fair, honest guy and the more I deal with different people on different things with my team, the more I realize how awesome he is for being a straight forward guy.”

Rager, Sr., and his wife Janet plan to travel and even spend part of the winter in the south, a far cry from the snowy northern racetracks that have been his workplace for nearly 30 years.

Those days are thankfully behind us. We only ride in, and build, the absolute best clothing systems on the snow. And the best starts with KLIM’s Intelligent Layering System.”

From base-layers to outerwear, KLIM is stepping up their Intelligent Layering System lineup big time with seven redesigned and three all-new products. Here’s the inside scoop on what the KLIM crew has been working on during their quest to outfit the driest, warmest and most comfortable riders on the snow.

BASE LAYERY:

REDESIGNED Aggressor Series Shirt, Pant and Brief

KLIM’s popular Aggressor base layers are nicely improved for 2012-2013 with total comfort and seam-minimization in mind. Already the most popular breathable moisture-wicking synthetic base gear on the snow, the lightweight Aggressor Series receives slimmed-down cuffs at the wrists and ankles , high-contrast low-profile stitching and a new pattern that eliminates the seam on the inside of your leg in the brief and pant—a huge comfort bonus.

Shirt: $42.99, Pant: $42.99, Brief: $26.99

NEW Defender Series Pant and Quarter Zip Shirt

The all-new Defender Series medium-weight base layer is set to dominate the cold. Utilizing an ultra-comfortable micro-grid material, the Defender Series provides more warmth with minimal bulk while delivering moisture wicking and quick-drying on-the-snow performance. KLIM developers have created a zero bulk, maximum warmth, insanely comfortable Pant and Quarter Zip Shirt (1/4 length front zipper) with the all-new Defender series.

Shirt: $79.99, Pant: $69.99

MID LAYERS

NEW Yukon Pullover

KLIM’s Yukon Pullover could be the most comfortable performance mid-layer ever developed for cold conditions. And, it’s likely to be one of those KLIM pieces you wear all winter. Designed as the ideal heavier-weight mid-layer (fitting between the KLIM Inferno and Everest Jackets in warmth factor) as well as the perfect pre and post-ride outer shirt (check out the handy cash/stash pocket on the sleeve!), the Yukon delivers efficient warmth, breathability and unbelievable all-day versatility thanks to Polartec Thermal Pro insulated construction. Slippery-yet-durable shoulder and elbow materials, stretchy micro cuffs and a quarter length zipper all ensure the Yukon provides a restriction-free ride all day.

$129.99

REDESIGNED INFERNO JACKET AND PANT

The Inferno Series lives best on top of base layers and under your favorite KLIM Bibs or Jacket as the king of Intelligent Layering System versatility. The Poly/Spandex/Thermal Guard fabric construction maintains big-time breathability while still being warm, lightweight and quick-drying. A new heat-welded pocket port maintains the under-jacket low-profile and a new gray Jacket colorway offers a nice option other than black.

Jacket: $99.99, Pant: $89.99

CASUAL INTELLIGENCE

REDESIGNED MEN’S SUMMIT TECH T and WOMEN’S ELEVATION TECH T

KLIM’s Casual Intelligence pieces blur the line of casual sports shirts and performance riding apparel and are great performers in either base (next-to-skin) or mid-layer roles. Both the Men’s Summit Tech T and Women’s Elevation Tech T are highly redesigned for 2012-2013 to offer more comfort, durability and versatility than ever before. An all-new hyper-wicking micro grid polyester fabric makes up the main body while massive stretch zones under the arms have been added to provide greater mobility as well as anti-microbial performance (less stink!).

Men’s Summit: $64.99, Women’s Elevation: $59.99

Arctic Cat Delivers Butt Whoopin’ at Grass Drags

0

The official kickoff to winter took place this past weekend at the 46th annual Haydays Grass Drags in North Branch, Mn. and Arctic Cat consumers were given plenty to brag about.

If there ever was a doubt as to which manufacturer has the World’s Fastest Snowmobiles, Arctic Cat proved it on the race track. The majority of all class finals paired Cat against Cat across four lanes of the track.

Team Arctic drag race coordinator, Al Shimpa said, “Team Arctic racers definitely gave Cat fans something to brag about this weekend. We blew by the competition like they were standing still. It was the text book definition of domination and something we are truly proud of!”

One of the most exciting class finals took place in Stock 1000 when four 2013 ProCross XF800s crossed the finish line so close, that the results had to be decided via the timing light system. After examination, a first place tie resulted between Matt Lemire and Jeff Marks.

Shimpa said, “Winners are crowned as a result of adding together their Reaction Time and their Elapsed Time (RT+ET=Result). A tie for first place rarely happens; this was truly spectacular!”
