2015 SKI-DOO: A New Front End for The XS!

0

Ever since Ski-Doo introduced its rising rate rMotion skidframe three years ago, the industry bar has been significantly raised in snowmobile rear end ride compliance. rMotion offers amazing ride control with no fear of bottoming and its easy adjustability has made it incredibly user-friendly.

Ski-Doo’s biggest problem has been rMotion is so unbelievably competent, the REV-XS’s front end ride and handling has taken a bit of a back seat in the evolution of the platform.

This year, Ski-Doo has made a bold step to modify the front end on all its XS models bringing it into full equilibrium with rMotion. The new front end weighs 1.75 lbs less and is called RAS2. Its most major change is the lengthening of the spindles, placing the A-arms 12mm further apart.

Although this seems like a small change, it’s actually huge. Since the sled’s “roll center” has now been raised 38mm (Note: Don’t confuse roll center with center of gravity.

A higher roll center is a good thing and a low C of G is most desirable) the sled corners even flatter and bump steer is reduced because the front end does not experience as much camber change as it cycles through its travel. The net result is a sled that is more stable in big bumps as speeds increase and has less roll when you’re throttling hard through the corners.

RAS2 is now standard on all MX-Z, Renegade, Summit and GSX models using the XS platform.

2015 SKI-DOO: SUMMIT X 174

0

Ski-Doo sales have been so dominant the last half-decade, the company can literally take baby steps updating its product and still maintain industry-leading market share.

One area Ski-Doo would love to have a stronger presence in is the mountain market. Its Summit line has been growing steadily and, depending who you’re listening to, may actually be in a first-place position in this highly specialized segment. Nevertheless, Polaris and Arctic Cat are keeping everyone dead-honest with their incessant improvements and innovations.

In 2015 it looks like Ski-Doo has taken a giant fly-swatter and splattered the competition with a mountain sled so radical it borders on the absurd. The new Summit X 174 is more than just a sled with a ridiculously long track.

Ski-Doo’s engineers have shaved a significant amount of weight from the Summit platform and the tMotion skidframe. How? There are no idler wheels in the middle of the skid and the rear wheels are much lighter.

The rear arm is now made of thin-walled chrome-moly and there’s been an overall weight reduction of 3-lbs from the skidframe. The muffler has lost significant weight and the rear heat exchanger is 50-percent shorter than last year.

Here’s the point: the 174 Summit X weighs about the same as last year’s 163. The 2015 Summit X 163 has lost a whopping 16.1-lbs.

The tMotion on the 174 is actually bolted about 5.2-inches further rearward for maximum weight transfer and climb-out. There are new Pilot DS3 skis this year with a 12mm deeper keel.

Standing next to the 174 is a freaky experience. The length of this 3-inch deep, 16-wide track is arresting. Someone commented the sled should come with a sleeper on it; there’s enough room to stretch out on the back of the tunnel and take a nap.

We spoke to Carl Kuster, who has ridden the 174 and he told us it’s simply unbelievable where you can go with this sled and the extra length, rather than being burdensome, is an asset in the mountains. We’ll take his word for it.

Ski-Doo is on a march in the mountains and the new Summit X 174 is going to get a lot of attention this year.

AXYS Platform on 2015 RUSH and Switchback Models

Five short years after Polaris shocked the world, reinventing the snowmobile by introducing the PRO-RIDE chassis on the RUSH model, the brand with a track record of 60 years of Terrain Domination is doing it again.

Polaris engineering, innovation, manufacturing capabilities and passionate understanding of what real riders really want have led to the all-new AXYS™ platform, the next-generation premium performance platform that is rider-balanced for terrain-dominating control.

Polaris began development of the AXYS platform with a clean sheet of paper and a simple goal: To radically raise the bar in the three dimensions that define world-class snowmobiles: Control, performance and comfort.

The all-new AXYS platform delivers the ultimate riding experience:

• Rider Balanced Control
• Unrivaled Acceleration
• Rider-Centric Comfort

Polaris is introducing a total of nine new 2015 RUSH and Switchback models built on the AXYS platform.

ALL-NEW CHASSIS

The foundation for the AXYS platform is an all-new chassis. This all-new chassis is built from the ground up with 93% new parts, including a carbon-fiber overstructure. The new chassis structure and design make it possible to change the rider positioning, centralize vehicle mass, redesign the rear suspension, add more power, remove weight, and evolve the rider’s riding experience. In short, it is the key to delivering rider-balanced control, unrivaled acceleration, and rider-centric comfort.

RIDER BALANCED™ CONTROL

Rider Balanced™ Control gives the rider:

• Flatter cornering without sacrificing the fun factor
• More precise handling in all conditions
• Better control in big bumps AND chatter bumps

How did Polaris® get there?

1. Put the rider in the right location on the sled.
2. Centralized the vehicle mass.
3. Optimized the suspension geometry to better control pitch.

Rider Positioning

Rider Balanced™ means putting the rider in the perfect position on the sled. The new chassis does just this, resulting in maximum control and maximum fun factor – at the same time.

On the new chassis, the rider is moved forward to a more balanced position on the sled. The rider’s hands are moved 4.5″ forward, the feet are 2″ forward, the knees are 4.5″ farther forward, and the seat is 4.5″ forward to put the rider in the perfect position to enjoy complete control of the sled and a great ride

In neutral riding position, the AXYS™ platform allows the sled to corner like it’s on rails with very little tip in the corners. When the trail gets rough or the rider jumps off into the powder, rider balance then enables the rider to move back and make the front end light to climb up on top of the snow or the moguls.

This perfect balance is unequaled by rider-forward competitors whose sleds can handle unpredictably in the rough, or can exhibit excessive ski-pressure on-trail, effectively diminishing the fun factor. Polaris delivers balance where others deliver forward bias.

Centralized Vehicle Mass

Vehicle mass is more centralized on the new chassis, enhancing cornering and control. The rider experiences easier and more precise handling.

Suspension Design & Positioning

The completely redesigned geometry of the all-new PRO-XC progressive-rate rear suspension is optimized for the best performance and Rider Balanced™ Control. Through innovative Polaris engineering and construction, the suspension is both lighter and stronger.

• It features a lightweight, forged aluminum rear crank.
• It has a completely redesigned crank and pivot.
• The front torque arm was moved rearward. This helps control pitch, increase travel, and improve the rail profile.

The all-new PRO-XC suspension delivers Active Pitch Control™. With Active Pitch Control, pitch is controlled by the suspension geometry and not simply by a high spring rate. This makes the sled less sensitive to adjustment while allowing optimal weight transfer.

As a result, the PRO-XC suspension delivers improved performance in ALL conditions, at all speeds. In big bumps and stutter bumps, at high and low speeds, the more compliant suspension setup produces:

• Flatter Cornering: Inside ski lift is significantly reduced.
• Chatter Bump Control: Control through chatter bumps is significantly increased. The front end of the sled stays planted even when accelerating through a corner.
• More-controlled Weight Transfer: A rider can enjoy strong, high-acceleration launches without any compromise in cornering precision.

UNRIVALED ACCELERATION

The AXYS platform delivers exactly what every rider craves: more power and less weight, resulting in unrivaled, class-leading acceleration. Polaris® achieved a 15% improvement in the power-to-weight ratio on AXYS.

Class-Leading Acceleration:

• Class-leading acceleration and speed through the ¼ mile
• Class-leading 0-60 mph
• Class-leading corner-to-corner acceleration for 30-50 mph
*Based on internal Polaris testing utilizing MY14 competitive product.

Lightest Weight:

• With its clean-sheet approach to developing the AXYS platform, Polaris engineers minimized weight throughout the sled without compromising strength.
• Selected models are up to 38 pounds lighter than they were on the previous chassis.
• The 2015 RUSH on the AXYS platform weighs at least 30 lb. less than a competitive trail performance model.
• While the weight was reduced, the sled’s strength, durability and reliability were maintained

New 800 H.O. Engine

Developed in conjunction with the AXYS platform, the new 800 H.O. engine delivers outstanding power and its integrated mounting position optimizes the balance of the chassis.

It features a high-efficiency intake and exhaust – including a 3-stage electronically-controlled exhaust valve. This delivers:

• Improved running quality and quieter ride
• Automotive smart actuator that provides feedback to the ECU for more accurate position and failsafe
• Fuel economy improvement

The electronic oil pump eliminates power-robbing gear drive – and provides more precise, improved oil delivery.

• 35% reduction in throttle effort
• More accurate & consistent oil delivery
• Altitude and temperature compensating
• Features diagnostics and failsafe

The engine weight was reduced by 3.5 lb., including a lightweight new engine mounting system and innovative, lightweight new materials that help reduce noise and weight.

Thermostat with Bypass:

• Warms up to operating temperature 40% faster
• Water flows through the engine at all times
• No possibility of cold shocking the engine

New Throttle Body:

• Lighter weight
• Reduced throttle effort
• Improved TPS location & orientation to prevent water intrusion

Improved Engine Air Flow

Polaris drivetrain engineers optimized the airflow in the new 800 H.O. engine with high-efficiency intake and exhaust and free-flowing, less-restrictive air flow, resulting in increased power output.

All-New Crankshaft = Enhanced Acceleration

The new, lightweight crankshaft provides the same balance as the previous crankshaft – with a 2.5-pound weight reduction in rotating mass. That produces a 25% reduction in inertia, improved throttle response and increased acceleration. The engine reaches its optimal operating RPM faster.

In the 2013-2014 snocross racing season, this lighter crankshaft delivered holeshot-winning enhanced acceleration for Polaris snocross racers. Recreational riders will experience enhanced acceleration from corner to corner – plus the engine delivers significantly improved fuel economy at trail speeds.

RIDER-CENTRIC COMFORT

The AXYS™ platform also raises the bar for rider comfort. Rider-Centric highlights of the AXYS platform include:

Integrated Storage: Storage was designed and developed right along with the AXYS platform, so it installs securely and easily, and features seamless, integrated styling that matches the sled’s design lines.

Enhanced Wind Protection: The hood and windshield designs produce significantly enhanced wind protection for a rider, and the foil on the side panels further enhances protection.

Improved Left-Hand Controls: The new left-hand controls feature improved ergonomics, updated styling, and enhanced hand and thumb warmer control. Controls are easy to operate with gloves on, and have an improved tactile feel.

More Comfortable Seat: The new seat utilizes a new high-performance seat foam, and the seat design is narrower in front to provide greater maneuverability. The seat is easily interchangeable with an accessory 2-up seat for true 2-up seating.

Longer, Larger Running Boards: The new seat is complemented by wider running boards that give the rider more options in foot and leg positioning. RUSH® running boards have 15% more space, Switchback running board space is increased by 11%.

Industry’s First LED Premium Lighting: Models built on the AXYS™ platform feature the industry’s first LED headlights as standard equipment. New LED headlights deliver the industry’s best lighting for significantly better visibility. Model Year 2015 AXYS LED lights are 30% brighter and nearly 1 lb. lighter.

Industry-Leading Color LCD Digital Gauge: Another industry first for Polaris, the AXYS 60th Anniversary models feature the most advanced instrumentation in snowmobiling.

Premium Fit & Finish: Interfacing surfaces between body panels and components are shorter for minimized gaps.

AXYS™ PRO-S AND PRO-X

2015 POLARIS AXYS: WHERE’D THE WEIGHT GO?

0

It’s not easy to take a modern snowmobile design and shave off double digits of mass.

Polaris began its AXYS weight reduction program with very broad strokes and re-wrote the former RUSH platform from the ground up.

The rear suspension is completely new although it still uses the external shock layout we’re familiar with. All the linkage and arms in the upper shock system have been vastly lightened.

The engineers claim by using much aluminum and thinner wall steel they’ve been able to reduce weight in the new PRO-XC suspension by a whopping 13-lbs! Chassis strength at both the front and rear is actually better than the RUSH.

With the seat removed you can see how the mounting setup at the rear is now firmly tied to the tunnel and a whole system of “overstructure” for the rear end was eliminated. The huge arm that squishes the upper rear shock is now fully made of extruded aluminum.

At the front, with the bodywork stripped away, you can see tubular carbon fiber supports running over the top of the engine are used to keep the front of the sled super rigid.

Polaris’ unique bonding (super-strength glue) process is in full use everywhere in the front end of the sled. The 800 engine lost significant weight, too.

Polaris claims the dry weight of the new AXYS, using a 120-inch track is now 32-lbs lighter than a Ski-Doo REV-XS. They claim the new AXYS Switchback with a 137-inch track is 34-lbs lighter than a 2014 Ski-Doo Renegade.

If this is accurate, it means Ski-Doo no longer holds claim to producing the lightest sleds in the Mountain, FreeRide, Crossover and Performance Trail categories.

Yup, the big wheel keeps turning in this business and it opens the door for a whole new world of products over the next five years.

2015 POLARIS: AN ALL-NEW 800 FOR MY15

0

The AXYS is a true blockbuster sled offering extremely low weight without compromising handling or ride – actually making incredible strides forward in both!

Wisely, Polaris didn’t put all its marbles into one jar just with massive weight reduction. The company has completely renovated its 800 2-stroke engine with the intention of exceeding everyone else’s power output.

Both the Cat 800EFI and Ski-Doo’s 800 E-TEC were carefully benchmarked and the target was to exceed both.

First, 2.5-lbs was shaved from the crankshaft’s weight to improve throttle response and RPM spool-up with 25-percent less inertia.

The lighter crank responds quicker and gets the sled out of the gate like an EXOCET. Although bore and stroke is the same and the engine cases are similar, the cases have been recast to accommodate a new integrated mounting system.

This ensures better clutch action with more consistent center-to-center and the engine actually acts as reinforcement for the sled’s cast bulkhead.

The electronic exhaust valves offer an industry-first multi-stage engagement to maximize torque in the low and mid-range and allows mega power to be produced at top end.

Due to the new exhaust valves and other electronics, the engine is actually much cleaner burning than former Cleanfire (Semi-Direct) injected Liberty mills and Polaris claims there’s a 25-30-percent improvement in gas mileage.

Combined with the AXYS platform’s better power-to-weight, the improved power output (Polaris is very tight-lipped about making claims but we presume this engine is making over 160-hp on the dyno) turns the new sled into a rocket.

Our testers told us the sled pulls extremely hard down low, transferring weight onto the track, keeping the skis light and just “keeps hauling right up through triple digits” with its 1.25-inch track. Seat-of-the-pants certainly seems to confirm the Polaris claims.

The AXYS is available as a PRO-S and a PRO-X. The PRO-S is targeted at the bulk of the market and is calibrated for real-world use in stutters and sustained bumps with more compliant suspension settings.

The PRO-X is an all-out version for big-bump hardcores and offers stiffer settings with aggressive high-speed resistance to bottoming prioritized.

POLARIS SPINS AROUND A NEW AXYS IN MY15!

0

Polaris has rocked the snowmobile world with a completely new and way-revolutionary platform to replace the RUSH and Switchback 137. It’s called the AXYS.

More than just a bodywork change, the designers have thrown out everything we’ve been accustomed to and made this sled industry-leading light, improved on the Pro-R’s already excellent handling, brought the front and rear suspensions forward light years and now claim to offer the highest output 800 2-stroke in the business!

The AXYS looks different, too. It actually sits lower overall without losing suspension travel and has a much more integrated look from the side view.

The rider’s seating position is way lower and the “barstool” look is now replaced with a more conventional layout – actually seating the driver about 4-inches forward from the RUSH position.

The idea was to centralize the sled’s mass more without over-weighting the front of the sled – a key item the Polaris engineers feel is critical to good snowmobile handling.

Get this: The AXYS 800’s weight has been reduced a total of 38-lbs over the RUSH for a dry weight of 430-lbs (claimed). This makes the new AXYS 15-lbs lighter than the feathery Indy 800. The net gain is a 15-percent increase in power-to-weight.

Our SUPERTRAX test crew tells us the performance is for real, too. They’ve already ridden the new AXYS models and acceleration is very impressive.

The power doesn’t diminish in the upper ranges, either. The sled still transfers great and ride and handling improvements are for real!

The AXYS offers better storage. There’s an upper dash storage compartment behind the windshield, molded bags are available along with an aluminum rack and the new seat is re-shaped for better transitions between sitting and standing.

There’s even a new 2-up seat option with new, lightweight running boards. The body itself is narrower but the boards are roomy and offer excellent grip.

Polaris has come up with industry-leading electronics for the AXYS. A new LED headlight is a breakthrough and a new 4-color digital gauge is available with complete diagnostics.

A GPS is optionally available, and even Bluetooth connectivity so you can get on-screen warnings when someone is calling or texting your Smart Phone.

Strong Qualifiers for Adams in Barrie

0

The CSRA National circuit returned to Georgian Downs in Barrie after some facility issues last season. The Barrie event is one of the largest races on the circuit and this year a long track was built to back it up.

This was one of the hometown races for the Supertrax/ Byers Motorsports/ Polaris team being a half hour down the road.

Jamie’s injury from Valcourt last weekend had not fully healed to compete at this event but he still did one lap to get minimum points.

With Jamie out, Byers Motorsports recruited Tom Adams from Indian River to compete in the Pro-Lite class. Tom raced for the team last season in Lindsay and like last year, this was Tom’s first time on the track this year.

Tom hit to the track for Saturdays practice to get the sled set-up for his liking. He came off the track with a grin from ear to ear with how impressed he was with the 2014 Polaris Racer’s throttle response and handling.

In Moto 1, Tom got a tough run to the 180* start corner and was at the back on the first lap. Tom rode well finishing 7th. He knew he was going to need a good finish in Moto 2 to qualify for the final and that’s exactly what he did finishing 3rd and qualifying 10th for a front row start in the final. Tom rode well in the final finishing 11th against the season regulars.

After having a day of racing under his belt, Tom was ready to rip the track and get strong finishes on Sunday. He came out flying in Moto 1, grabbing the holeshot and leading the race for the first 3 laps finishing 3rd at the checkered.

He grabbed another 3rd place finish in Moto 2 qualifying 6th for the final. Tom had been hot on the start light on Sunday and didn’t fail to impress for the final grabbing another holeshot with his Polaris IQ. Tom rode a hard 3 laps leading the race before fatigue started to set in, making a couple mistakes, finishing 12th.

“It felt good to be back on a sled and want to thank Byers Motorsports for giving me this opportunity. I was really impressed with how well the sled performed and pulled hard for the holeshots.” Tom said after the weekend.

Polaris Sets Pace Through 1st Half of Iron Dog

0

Polaris cross-country snowmobile racers Mike Morgan and Chris Olds were the leaders at the midway point of the grueling 2014 Iron Dog cross-country snowmobile race across Alaska.

Competing in the Pro class, Morgan and Olds led the field into Nome, Alaska, where the drivers enjoyed a midway banquet on Wednesday night before racing resumed Thursday, Feb. 20.

The Pros are expected to cross the finish line in Fairbanks on Saturday, Feb. 22.

Racers on Polaris snowmobiles dominated the Pro-class field at the midway point. Of the two-man Pro teams that reached Nome:

– Polaris teams were in first and third places.
– Five of the top 10 teams were on Polaris.
– Nine of the top 20 Pro teams were on Polaris sleds, more than any other brand.

Morgan and Olds arrived at the midway point in Nome 25 minutes ahead of the second-place team, meaning they would start the second half of the race with that advantage.

Both were competing on Polaris 600 Switchback PRO-R sleds. Morgan, 28, is from Nome and is in his fifth Iron Dog. Olds, 42, who is from Eagle River, Alaska, has run the race 12 times before this year and was on back-to-back winning teams in 2010 and 2011.

In third place at Nome was the Polaris team of Todd Minnick and Nick Olstad, a pair of Wasilla, Alaska, racers who teamed up to win the 2009 race. Minnick, 34, is on a 600 Switchback PRO-R in his 12th Iron Dog race. Olstad, 31, who is on a 600 RUSH in his 10th Iron Dog, won in 2005, his first year as a Pro, as well as in 2009.

Experienced racers said conditions for this year’s 2,013-mile race were as rough as they could recall. The final leg of the first half, from Unalakleet to Nome, was reportedly as challenging as the veterans had ever seen it, with a severe lack of snow, frozen tundra tussocks, exposed rock, and broken ice slowing teams and causing significant sled damage.

Polaris racer Scott Faeo rode the final 40 miles to Nome on one ski after an aftermarket ski on his sled broke. He and all the other racers took advantage of the layover in Nome to work on their sleds.

Other Polaris race teams in the top 10 at the halfway point were:

7. Archie Agnes and Arnold Marks, both from Tanana, Alaska, and both on 600 Switchback PRO-R sleds.
8. Shane Barber of Willow, Alaska, and Ryan Sottosanti of Wasilla. They reached Nome just 39 seconds behind the team ahead of them, and are racing on 600 Switchback PRO-R sleds.

10. Gabe Bunke of Moorhead, Minnesota, and Scott Faeo of Wasilla. They were racing on 600 INDY sleds, and arrived in Nome just 8 seconds behind the ninth-place team. Faeo is in his second Iron Dog as a Pro, and Bunke, a Midwest cross-country and enduro racing star, is competing in the Iron Dog for the first time in his career.

Polaris Pro-class racers in the second 10 spots at Nome included:

13. Archie Beetus and Ryan Folsom, both on 600 INDY models.
16. Kyle Conner on a 600 Switchback and Jerrod Vaughn on a 600 Switchback PRO-R.
18. Chris Carroll and Ray Chvastasz, both on 600 RUSH PRO-R models.
20. Tyler Delimont and Larry Jones, both on 600 INDY sleds.

Of the Trail-class teams that had reached Nome, the third-place team includes Rachel Kidwell, a rookie who was racing on a 600 Switchback PRO-R.
