ARCTIC CAT’S DREAM RIDE CONTEST CAN BE YOUR REALITY!

0

Arctic Cat, working in cooperation with Supertrax International Magazine and SnowTrax Television, launched the incredible Dream Ride contest earlier this year.

The Dream Ride contest will be awarding two custom-built Arctic Cat snowmobiles to two lucky winners!

TAKE YOUR PICK!

The winners of the Dream Ride contest will get their choice of either a 2015 Arctic Cat XF800 Sno Pro or an M8000 Sno Pro.

Both these snowmobiles were the subject of a crazy modification and accessorization series on SnowTrax Television last season.

SnowTrax TV’s AJ Lester equipped these two incredible snow rippers with thousands of dollars worth of Arctic Cat parts and accessories, including upgrading the M8000 to near-2016 specs with Cat’s new “boney” front spindles and a huge 3-inch lug track. You can see the sleds being massaged at snowtraxtv.com. Click on the video portal and watch each episode.

IT’S NOT JUST A DREAM SLED – IT’S A DREAM RIDE!

Winning either one of these incredible custom Arctic Cats would be a dream come true, however, the dream lives on for the two lucky winners of the Dream Ride contest!

Besides getting a new, custom sled, the winners will take an all-expense-paid snowmobile ride with some of Arctic Cat’s most famous movers and shakers and SnowTrax Television’s hosts.

The winner of the M8000 will get treated to an all-expense-paid ride with Arctic Cat’s mountain ambassadors and the SnowTrax TV team.

THIS IS MORE THAN A DREAM – IT’S DOGGONE EPIC!

Clearly this is the coolest grand prize Arctic Cat has awarded in conjunction with Supertrax and SnowTrax.

The snowmobiles are among the sweetest rides you’ve ever seen and the ride events the winners will take part in are sick!

HOW DO I ENTER?

It’s easy. Check out this issue of Supertrax International Magazine (US and Canadian Editions) and you’ll find a ballot to enter the Dream Ride. Fill it out, rip down to your local Arctic Cat store and deposit it in their ballot box.

REMEMBER: YOU CAN’T DREAM IF YOU DON’T ENTER!

ARCTIC CAT’S NEXT BIG THING

0

The development cycle for new snowmobile platforms is generally five to seven years. We’ve been frankly surprised, that Ski-Doo has stayed with the super-light XP-XS chassis since its intro in 2009 (8 model years) but, hey, why argue with success?

Polaris jumped all over the market’s expectations when it issued a re-done version of the RUSH last year and challenged Ski-Doo’s low-weight dominance. What was surprising was that the AXYS rollover was only about 5 years. Now that we’ve seen it, we’re glad they did it, though.

We’ve been wondering how long Cat will stay with the ProCross. Truthfully, we love this platform in all its variations and its handling, ride and performance are exemplary. We’re guessing Thief River Falls will still be rolling out PCs for the next two or three years but we’re also wondering – then what?

Changing everything is more of a big deal for Cat than it is for other OEMs. Why? Now Yamaha is marketing Cat-made snowmobiles and if there are major revamps to the ProCross series, can they be adaptable quick enough to Yamaha’s model demands?

We strongly suspect that any new Cat chassis will need to account for more Yamaha-specific technology as well as AC-specific features. Like what?

We suspect Yamaha’s new SingleShot lightweight skid is a strong contender to be utilized in either the Viper chassis or in an all-new chassis that can also accommodate the Apex’s big 4-cylinder mill.

We also think Yamaha would like its Vipers to have more distinctive styling and looks compared to Cat models and starting fresh with a new platform could help that happen.

Last, Cat needs to do the AXYS thing and utilize every production concept to shave weight from the new-Gen ProCross. This is especially important to Yamaha (using only heavier 4-strokes) and to keep up with the super-lightness of Polaris and Ski-Doo.

The other driving force is the fact Ski-Doo is pretty much long overdue to come out with something new, top to bottom. Such a new snowmobile could put the existing ProCross into the fossil category.

NEW 2016 SKI-DOO MXZx 600 RS

0

BRP introduces the 2016 Ski-Doo MXZx 600RS racing snowmobile designed specifically to attack North American snocross tracks.

The sled will feature a radically updated engine, new clutch, and suspension changes that result in better acceleration, traction and rider control.

The MXZx 600RS already has a proven track record of durability, great handling and low maintenance costs for its racers. For 2016, the Race Engineering team in Valcourt concentrated on engine, clutch, suspension and track development to deliver better starts, better drive from corner to corner and more power throughout a race.

The Rotax engine features a new cylinder design with a tight tolerance manufacturing process to maximize power and consistency. In addition, there’s a new crankshaft, drive clutch and stator that reduce inertia more than three times compared to last season’s light weight crank program.

The powerpack also features a new Y-pipe shape, and tuned pipe to match the cylinder changes, plus a lightweight muffler that shaves six pounds (2.72 kg) off the sled. These changes together deliver fast revving, consistent and robust power from engagement all the way to the 8500 RPM redline.

To make the most of the additional power, the Valcourt Race Shop matched the engine with a completely new high performance pDrive primary clutch. This new pDrive is designed to reduce friction, reduce weight, tighten tolerances, allow for more consistent RPM delivery, require less maintenance and last longer.

To accomplish this, the specialty racing pDrive clutch features unique elements like fast and friction-free dual rollers to transfer torque in place of traditional sliding buttons, the renowned BRP-exclusive adjustable clickers – only this time applied to flyweights, needle bearings in oversize rollers and a compact open design that’s also 11mm narrower. The new clutch and new clutch cover combine to reduce belt operating temperature by 68° F (20° C).

Another driveline component seeing change is the track. A new lightweight track that shaves an additional 2 pounds (.9 kg) of rotating weight takes the basic design from last year and reshapes the lugs down low while adding strength with towers at the ends and in the middle of each lug for both better holeshots and more durability. Late season testing shows the new track gaining a consistent one half to one full sled length advantage over last year – without considering the engine and clutch changes.

In the quest to gain every advantage possible, there will also be a new patent pending progressive coupling device that can be added to the renowned Racing rMotion suspension that’s used on the MXZx 600RS. This device aids in weight transfer and chassis dynamics to deliver the explosive holeshots every racer wants.

RECAP OF CHANGES:

New Cylinder: New design and manufacturing process for more power and consistent output from each part
New Crankshaft: Improved lightweight design for fast spool up
New Stator: Lightweight design for faster revving and reduced inertia
New Y Pipe: Matches new cylinder
New Tuned pipe; Matches new cylinder
New Muffler: Lightweight (-6 lbs./-2.72 kg)
New Racing pDrive Clutch: Low inertia, roller and flyweight design
New Track: Two pounds (.9 kg) lighter, stiffer lugs/paddles, more durable
Clutch Cover: Reduces belt operating temperature by 68° F (-20° C)
Progressive coupling: For explosive holeshots
New Seat shape: Lighter and more room for driver

2016 POLARIS RACE SLED

0

Optimism for a winning 2015-2016 race season runs high throughout the Polaris Snowmobile Racing program thanks to an infusion of new young talent in the Pro snocross ranks, the winning momentum of cross-country racers on Polaris-exclusive AXYS sleds, and the fact that already-dominant Polaris hillclimbers will have the performance advantage of racing on sleds built on the all-new AXYS RMK platform.

Polaris snowmobile racers won from Alaska to Quebec last winter and they’re focused on winning more features, major races, and points titles this coming winter.

“It’s extremely competitive in every racing discipline, but we feel we have the teams, racers, and outstanding Polaris race sleds to win our share this winter,” said Polaris Snowmobile Racing Manager Tom Rager, Jr.

The 2015-2016 snowmobile racing season kicks off on Thanksgiving weekend with the snocross season opener in Duluth, Minnesota, and runs through April, when the final hillclimb events are held in the Rockies.

The Polaris ISOC National snocross ranks have been infused with fast, young talent for the upcoming winter.

“We made some big changes in our Pro Open lineup with three Pro Lite guys moving into the Pro Open class, something we have never done before,” Rager said.

Andrew Carlson (Carlson Motorsports), Trevor Leighton (Leighton Motorsports), and last season’s ISOC Pro Lite champion, Ryan Springer (Carlson Motorsports), are all moving up to race in the Pro Open class. Another newcomer is Swedish champion Petter Narsa (Hentges Racing), who will race on Polaris sleds for the first time in his career and will race full-time in North America.

“We’ve got eight full-time ISOC Pro Open riders,” Rager said. “The new guys have all shown that they’ve got the speed to be in Pro Open, and we’ve got four guys returning who are proven veterans.”

Returning are Kyle Pallin (Team LaVallee), who finished third in ISOC Pro Open points last season; Ross Martin (Judnick Motorsports), who finished fourth; Corin Todd (Leighton Motorsports), eighth in points; and Kody Kamm (Hentges Racing), who was ninth.

“Those [veterans] are so solid, you can count on those guys every weekend,” Rager said. “It’s a nice luxury for us to have those guys who are rock solid to anchor this new crop of Pro Open riders we’re bringing in.”

Polaris cross-country racers used sleds built on the AXYS platform for the first time last season. They won races and learned a great deal about how to set the sleds up for racing.

“The AXYS chassis worked great last year, and Ryan Faust won the Pro final at the USXC season opener on an AXYS,” Rager said. “But since it was brand new for our racers, we had a steep learning curve. Our racers did a great job adapting to it, and we’ll be even more competitive this year.”

He noted that the AXYS sleds raced in USXC cross-country events were virtually stock sleds just like what’s available at Polaris dealerships.

“It’s a showroom piece,” he said of the RUSH® PRO-S models. “Other than some different spring rates and valving changes for particular riders, it’s a showroom stock sled.”

Polaris Racers Scott Faeo & Eric Quam won the 2015 Iron Dog cross-country race across Alaska on a pair of 600 Switchback® models built on the new AXYS platform. Polaris teams dominated the grueling Iron Dog as they finished first and third, and earned six top-10 spots.

Quam is taking this coming winter off to attend to work and family commitments, Rager said, but he will still be working closely with Faeo, who will team with four-time race winner Marc McKenna in the 2016 Iron Dog. McKenna teamed with Allen Hill to finish third on AXYS Switchback models in last winter’s race.

Rager said Polaris enduro racers competing on the MIRA circuit, in the No Bull Triple Crown, and at the Soo I-500 will once again race on the Polaris IQ® Race Sled equipped with a special Soo suspension kit.

“Each year we try to make a couple tweaks and improvements to that package,” he said. “Last year we felt we made some changes that were beneficial but they didn’t get to show up because the Soo got cut to half-distance. The changes we made didn’t get a chance to show up, but we hope they will at this winter’s Soo.”

Hillclimbers: Dominant & Armed With New Sleds
Polaris hillclimbers have dominated the RMSHA circuit for several seasons, and they can approach the coming season with optimism because all the top Polaris racers return, and they will be racing on new AXYS RMK sleds.

“We had some racers test with the new sled last spring and they absolutely loved it,” Rager said of the patented raised chassis that delivers instantaneous lift. “It should be even more fun this year to take this new, improved chassis and go do battle. Plus, it’s the same sled any consumer can go buy off the showroom floor.”

Polaris hillclimbers won 11 of the 12 Pro RMSHA points titles last season, led by Luke Rainey, who had his best season ever and won four titles. David Sharp, Jr., and Erin Beukelman won two classes each, and Justin Thomas, Keith Curtis, and Aaron Sterck won one title apiece.

Ovals: Gearing Up for a Rebound
Polaris oval racers were not satisfied with their success on several oval circuits and at the Eagle River World Championship Snowmobile Derby last winter, and they’re all eyeing a return to the top of the podium this season.

Leading the Polaris oval effort are Dustin Wahl and Jordan Wahl (both Jimmy John’s/Wahl Bros/Polaris Racing), Matt Ritchie (Ritchie Motorsports), and Nick Van Strydonk (T&N Racing), the 2012 Eagle River world champion.

HAY DAYS 2015

0

It’s finally here – the annual official kick-off of winter! The Sno Barons iconic, ginormous snowmobile show, sale, swap meet and racing extravaganza.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

Look for us, Supertrax Magazine and Snowtrax Television all weekend. Luke and AJ will be circulating the show on Saturday and will be easy to find in our booth on the main midway just up from the OEM display intersection. We’ve got entry ballots for great contests and time to talk with our readers and fans.

WHAT TO LOOK OUT FOR:

First, look for non-current sled deals like you haven’t seen in a couple years. Inasmuch as the 2014 season ended off with very little, actually record-low inventories of unsold new sleds, last year’s poor snow in both the Midwest and far-west mountain markets means a copious volume of non-currents will be on site.

These non-currents will mostly be the property of Minnesota area dealers, however, we’ve seen dealers from Wisconsin and Michigan in past years haul their late model unsold, non-current iron to Hay Days. In any case, look for some one-of-a-kind sleds with once-in-a-long-time prices.

Second, look for a fairly serious adjustment to used sled prices. There are two reasons for this: Last year’s poor weather in mid and western markets and the change in cross-border shopping.

The Canadian dollar is way low this year compared to the US buck. This means Canadians will not be buying sleds in the US like they have when the Canadian dollar was close to par with the US buck.

Less demand for used sleds is the result. That means used iron values will likely be lower than in the past couple seasons. With the increase in discounted non-current new sleds and the US/Canadian dollar issue in play Hay Days should be a good barometer for used sled values in this season.

Third, clothing. Helmets, accessories and consumables like oil and traction products should be shopped at this year’s Hay Days. With the Midwest trail market and the Western mountain market suffering one of the lowest snow winters on record there will be plenty of selection at excellent prices. Look for clothing, helmets, carbides, traction products, lubricants and yes, even trailers at attractive, once-in-a-decade prices.

Remember, arrive early to get the best deals. If you’re a swapper then that’s doubly true!

See you Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the biggest, craziest and the most amazing event in the entire powersports industry – the Sno Barons Hay Days!

POLARIS SUPPORTS HOUSING IN ROSEAU

0

The Polaris Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Polaris Industries Inc., has provided a grant of $300,000 to help construct Tamarack Place, a 41-unit apartment building in Roseau, Minnesota, the birthplace of Polaris and home to a major Polaris engineering and manufacturing center.

Scheduled to open in the summer of 2016, the new apartment complex will expand the housing available for the growing workforce in Roseau County.

The Polaris Foundation awarded the grant to the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, which is working in conjunction with the Roseau County Workforce Housing Program (RCWHP) on Tamarack Place. The mission of the RCWHP is to increase housing available in the county so employers such as Polaris can continue to attract and retain top talent.

“A primary mission of the Polaris Foundation is Community Development in areas where Polaris has facilities and where our employees work, live, and play,” said Stacy Bogart, President of the Polaris Foundation. “With Tamarack Place, the Polaris Foundation hopes to enhance the quality of life in Roseau and ensure the city has a vibrant selection of premium residential opportunities for a growing workforce.”

A groundbreaking that signaled the start of construction was held Friday, August 28, at the site of Tamarack Place, 1105 Third Ave. S.W. in Roseau. County and city officials participated in the groundbreaking, along with leadership from the Polaris facility in Roseau.

Polaris Industries Inc. was incorporated in Roseau in 1954, and the company has continually operated manufacturing facilities there ever since. Polaris has expanded and upgraded its Roseau operations continually in the past 61 years, and today the company’s Roseau facilities house engineering and manufacturing for multiple product lines.

Tamarack Place will include one-, two-, and three-bedroom units with amenities such as in-unit washer/dryers, central heating/cooling, elevator service, and an outdoor recreation area. The building was designed under the sustainable guidelines of Minnesota Green Communities, and it will be a smoke-free building.

The Tamarack Place project is being developed by Sand Companies, Inc., of Waite Park, Minnesota, in partnership with Polaris, Citizens State Bank, Border State Bank, the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, the Greater Minnesota Housing Fund, the City of Roseau, and Minnesota Equity Fund.

WHO WILL BE THE BIG WINNER IN 2016?

0

The Supertrax bench racing team frequently get into hot-headed arguments about the virtues of different snowmobiles and snowmobile brands.

Although there’s rarely full agreement, sometimes there is the occasional nod of the head and reluctant approval given.

One point of discussion is about who will be the big winner (defined as making the biggest market share gain) in the next 12 months. It’s important to note, you can’t define a winner without reflecting on who is the most vulnerable and will relinquish sales to the net gainers. Lets check out the facts.

Ski-Doo has at least 40-percent of the market and arguably the hardest-core group of dedicated followers presently. Their dominance means the other three OEMs are dividing up less than 60-percent.

Keep in mind, gains in market share rates do not come in double digit amounts, more like a fraction of a percentage point at a time and there’s also the possibility the overall market will grow, too.

Yamaha now offers nearly double the number of sleds it did three years ago. Based on the sheer availability of more units in more segments, it should gain a few pops in market share.

Arctic Cat has also increased its model mix and is performing very aggressively against market leader Ski-Doo in both 4-stroke and 2-stroke categories. We see potential for a gain.

Polaris has dominated the mountain market and is gaining credibility with the new AXYS in both the vertical and trail markets. The company has also increased its presence in the utility realm with a wide selection of Indy. We’re thinking increase here, too.

If there are increases from two or three of the snowmobile makers, it means one or two will either stay the same or lose some points – all provided the overall market remains static. Hmm.

The four manufacturers are producing great stuff in a multitude of categories and it’s not like you’re going to get something sub-par if you change brands.

We’ll report on the numbers as more information comes through – and the weather cooperates to give us all a great riding season and the OEMs a great selling season.

Woody’s Charity Event Has Record Setting Year

0

International Engineering & Manufacturing, Inc. (IEM), maker of Woody’s traction products, held its 6th Annual Golf Outing on August 14, 2015.

Many returning teams along with a dozen new teams came together in efforts to raise funds for Pink Ribbon Riders (PRR). The six-year running total raised for PRR skyrocketed past $62,000!

The Pink Ribbon Riders is a small 501 C 3 non-profit organization that provides direct financial assistance to both men and women diagnosed with breast cancer in gifts of $500. Funds raised at this event will help Michigan residents.

Goals for this year’s outing were to have 120 participants and raise $12,000 and both those goals were achieved with flying colors. Team registrations reached a record high as 34 teams joined in the 2015 event and funds raised surpassed the set goal!

In addition, sponsorships received were a record high and prize/auction donations from industry partners and local businesses were again outstanding and undeniably contributed in the overall money raised.

The day kicked off early as the 136 participants checked in at the Beech Hollow Golf Course in Freeland, Michigan. They enjoyed Timbits donated by Tim Horton’s of Midland and had the opportunity to look through photo albums of the previous five golf outings.

Throughout the hot muggy day, players gave their best shot at winning a $10K Hole-In-One, Maverick Hole-In-One, and several hole prizes. Again this year, golfers had the chance to browse through a large selection of donated items for the silent auction displayed at hole #14.

For the six year in a row, participants showed their unselfishness and helped raise $14,393 for this one-day event! After a great day of play, teams gathered under the pavilion area where they were treated to Beech Hollow’s fabulous chicken dinner.

During dinner, Jody McKay from Pink Ribbon Riders presented the group with some updated information on PRR and introduced a recent $500 gift card patient recipient, Nancy Jones from Midland. Nancy shared her breast cancer journey with the group and enjoyed the dinner with her family as the awards ceremony and final activities continued.

Team Morning 3 Wood took 1st place and was awarded $480 and the 2nd place position was held by Team Wixom getting $260; which both teams donated all their winnings back to the cause.

For added fun, the last place winners received large packages of toilet paper. Winning skins team, W.V. Performance Racing, donated their $620 back (another record setting item), along with one of the 50/50 drawings given back to PRR.

Along with the cash winnings donated back to PRR, drawing winners who won a $25 Visa gift card gave the cards to Nancy. Pictures from the event are posted on Woody’s Facebook page, Woody’s 6h Annual Charity Golf Outing.

Next year’s 7th Annual event is scheduled for August 12, 2016. Early Bird team registration and sponsorship opportunities will be available in early spring 2016.

Tanya King, outing organizer, said, “I have attended many charity outings and I’m so impressed with our group of participants and their giving back. They truly are the ones that keep me inspired to make each year bigger and better. I cannot say ‘thank you’ enough to all that make this event a huge success.”

This event would not be possible without the help of these giving people and companies. THANK YOU!
