WHAT’S CAT’S NEW DSI 800 LIKE?

0

Right now the order banks are buzzing with sales contracts signed and sealed to get Arctic Cat’s new Dual Stage Injected 800.

The engine is very similar in design to the DSI 600, which, by the way, has been a huge success both from a performance and a reliability standpoint.

The engine the new DSI 800 replaces, the old Suzuki-built twin, was a bastion of durability and was perhaps, the most reliable 800 2-stroke in the business over its lifespan. Although there’s no reason to think the new engine will be less reliable, it does have to prove itself in the marketplace over time.

One thing we know for sure is there is a tangible difference in the way the two engines run. In comparison, the old one was a bit of a vibrator with power delivery like a hopped-up chainsaw.

It let you know it was a serious high performance powerplant, and was kinda fat off engagement and at throttle tip-in. The new one is smooth and linear in its power delivery all the way from engagement to full shift. It’s actually sneaky the way it spools its power – no muss, no fuss – it just gets the job done.

The big question: Is it faster? Based on our month with a prototype last year, we would definitely say it is. However, it’s faster where you notice it most – and that is at lower RPM and mid-range.

Up top, we’re not sure there’s a lot of difference (the old 800 was always pretty fast when wound out) but when you tap the throttle at about 4000 RPM, the DSI just jumps.

In this range and slower, the engine is crisp in its power delivery – much like a Polaris 800 – and the tach keeps climbing with no flat spots as warp speeds approach.

We think this engine will be great in the mountains or in powder because of its immediate and very responsive power delivery in the bottom half of its power curve.

What we don’t know is if it is any better on fuel than the old Suzook 800. Hey, I’ll bet you don’t even care that much. You didn’t buy an 800 to brag about fuel economy, did you!

2018 ARCTIC CAT ZR 6000R SX

0

Arctic Cat is aiming an all-new 2018 ZR 6000R SX snocross race machine at the top step of the podium this season thanks to a wide array of technological improvements that deliver improved handling, greater predictability in rough conditions, optimal ergonomics and better throttle response.

The result of an intense effort by the Arctic Cat Engineering and Race Departments, the 2018 ZR 6000R SX snocross machine is new from nose-to- tail, with more than 350 new parts compared to the previous year.

“Many of the improvements we’ve made to the 2018 ZR 6000R SX were inspired and proven by the Pro Open snocross sleds raced by Tucker Hibbert and Logan Christian during the past several years,” said Brian Dick, Arctic Cat High Performance/Race Product Team Manager. “In fact, both racers played a big role in the testing and development of the new sled and, after some late spring testing, con rmed the huge improvements we were aiming for.”

It starts with a longer 15 x 136 x 1.75-in. SnoCross track and revised SLIDE-ACTION rear suspension that deliver improved traction for holeshots and acceleration, greater straight-line stability on a rough race course; and improved traction while braking. A new rail pro le places 6-in. more rail contact on the snow (compared to the previous 129-in. track) for improved bump compliance and reduced bottoming on the chassis.

It’s matched by the new ARS front suspension featuring increased caster, adjustable camber and increased ground clearance. The result is significantly improved handling that’s more predictable and con dence-inspiring, as well as increased cornering bite.

Racers will appreciate a full range of ergonomic improvements to the new ZR 6000R SX, including a new lightweight seat design that works in concert with a new, ultra-compact 3-gallon fuel tank, Next Gen side panel bodywork and a new console to allow easier movement around the sled, especially for cornering, as well as a lower center-of-gravity.

Racers will be able to move further forward on the sled while cornering, with more clearance for legs and knees. New foot enclosures complement the upgrades.

Weight was trimmed everywhere. Besides the seat and lightweight fuel tank, a new hollow driven shaft, headlight assembly and revised chassis components shave off several pounds to offset the marginal weight increase of the longer track and rear suspension.

When it comes to holeshots and accelerating out of corners, a heavily revised Arctic Cat C-TEC2 6000 EFI engine delivers a 15% increase in horsepower and torque and a 20-percent improvement throttle response at low- and mid-range levels thanks to new cylinder and exhaust valve con guration, revised calibration mapping and V-FORCE reeds.

The massive changes and upgrades re ect Team Arctic’s desire to give its racers the most potent stock snocross snowmobile, from the Junior class
to Pro. It re ects many of the same features and technology used on previous Pro Open sleds piloted Tucker Hibbert and Logan Christian. And both racers spent considerable time testing the all-new production racer.

“We took a lot of the ideas we’ve been using on my winning Pro Open sled the past two years and applied them to the new race ZR,” said Tucker Hibbert. “The changes to the front suspension made it better than anything we’d previously used on our race sled. From a handling standpoint, this is the best stock ZR we’ve ever had. It’s more stable and tracks straight, without kicking sideways; it doesn’t scrub speed on hard landings or when pounding through big holes; it turns better; and the new narrow bodywork is a huge improvement.”

The 2018 Arctic Cat ZR 6000R SX can only be purchased through the Arctic Cat Race Department.

MAX GRIP FROM MACK – GUARANTEED!

0

In the snowmobile traction business, when you offer a 5-year warranty on your product, it’s guaranteed to get some attention.

That’s exactly what New Hampshire’s Mack Studs offers with its studs. Unbelievably, a 5-year no-bend or break guarantee comes with the purchase of their product.

Why go so far out on a limb? The key is in the heat-treating process Mack uses and it ensures a longer life. Add to this the fact each stud’s base is 5/16-inch in diameter.

5/16 width in the push-through design means they can handle high RPM rotation under load, sudden impacts from ice and rocks and not deform or, worse, get sheared off.

Besides its standard versions, Mack makes Mega-Studs, specially designed for lightweight, single ply tracks. These studs use a thicker 1.185-inch backer to support the stud as the track flexes.

There’s also a Mega N-Vader stud with a tapered point carbide tip for some serious grip. These are a long-life stud designed for serious running on icy or extremely hard-packed surfaces and are big hit with ditch warriors, both in racing and recreational cross-country riding.

If you go to mackstud.com you’ll find a complete catalog of studs, backers, washers and Nylock nuts – even carbide runners for your skis.

Supertrax strongly endorses Mack products and we’re confident you’ll be satisfied when you use them this winter.

CAMSO STORM 150 TRACK

0

The next-generation of snowmobile trail track has arrived with the Camso Storm 150. Designed for modern rider-forward snowmobiles, it is capable of breathtaking acceleration on-trail, excellent flotation off-trail and crisp control in all conditions.

“High performance trail riders have been migrating towards deeper lug tracks in an effort to get better acceleration, traction and control, while still being able to venture into deep snow,” explains Bruce Dashnaw, Sales & Marketing Executive Director – Powersports at Camso. “But the deeper lugs often result in a need for greater throttle input and a reduction in rider comfort. The Camso Storm 150 provides an innovative solution to push riders to a new height of performance.”

The Camso Storm 150 gives riders the best of both worlds by using 1.5-inch cup-shaped center lugs that provide acceleration on packed trails and bite hard in soft, loose snow conditions. Combined with 1.25-inch outer lugs, it provides power and control through the tightest turns by improving tail slide capacity. It also maintains ground contact during pitch turns.

Optimized support columns give this track the right balance of lug rigidity and flex for excellent all-round performance. The result is the first two-lug height trail track of its kind, available in 120, 129, 137 and 146 inch lengths.

As well, the trail track’s design symmetry and profile geometry make the snowmobile feel more firmly planted to the trail for better handling even at high speeds, while at the same time significantly reducing noise compared to many other trail tracks.

In their efforts to create the Camso Storm 150, Camso engineers co-developed the design with the help of Polaris, long-time partner and customer of Camso. “Further feedback was provided by Polaris on the performance characteristics of the track, allowing us to further improve the Storm 150’s features. The result is an innovative new trail track that provides all-out acceleration and agility, whether the rider chooses to tear up trails or carve through fresh powder,” says Dashnaw.

The Camso Storm 150 will be making its first public appearance at HayDays, the world’s biggest snowmobile and ATV event in the world, in North Branch, Minnesota on September 9 and 10 (booth AD0-AD1). It will be available to purchase this fall through Camso’s established network of powersports dealers worldwide.

Camso, the Road Free company, is a world leader in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of off-road tires, wheels, rubber tracks and undercarriage systems to serve the material handling, construction, agricultural and powersports industries. It employs more than 7,500 dedicated employees that place 100% of their effort on 11% of the global tire and track market—the off-the-road market. It operates advanced R&D centres and manufacturing plants in North and South America, Europe and Asia. Camso supplies its products to leading original equipment manufacturers (OEM) under the names Camso and Solideal and distributes its products in the replacement market through its global distribution network.

OFSC Celebrates 50th Anniversary

Barrie, ON, May 31, 2017 – During the 50th Anniversary Year of the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) and in celebration of Ontario Trails Week, May 29 to June 4, The Province of Ontario has announced that the OFSC’s Trans Ontario Provincial (TOP) Trails are being honoured as “Ontario Trails of Distinction” (OTD) under a new program launching this week.

According to The Honourable Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture & Recreation, the OTD Program is a legacy initiative of the 150th anniversary of Ontario and is designed to showcase and celebrate distinctive trails in the province. The OTD Program will also help promote Ontario trails as a premiere tourist destination.

“This worthy recognition is a credit to the collective efforts of our clubs and volunteers who can be justly proud of delivering this amazing trail product over the past 50 years,” said OFSC Executive Director Paul Shaughnessy. “The Ontario Trails of Distinction designation will be beneficial to the future promotion and health of organized recreational snowmobiling across Ontario.”

Through its member snowmobile clubs, the OFSC provides more than 30,000 kilometres of snowmobile trails each winter that account for more than 50% of the total number of recreational trails in this province. More than 20% of the OFSC system is comprised of TOP Trails, which provide an integrated framework for the local and regional club trails that comprise the balance. Altogether, the OFSC trail network generates $1.7 billion of economic impact annually for Ontario.

Launched in 1993, OFSC TOP Trails provide snowmobile access across the province to tourism regions and connect snowbelt communities. As primary snowmobile touring routes, TOP Trails have links to services and amenities, heritage features, club trails and also include 33 designated OFSC Snow Tours.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) is a volunteer led not for profit association that provides the voice for organized snowmobiling in the Province of Ontario.
