THE MYSTIQUE OF THE SRX

0

We can’t come up with any good reason for it but every time we post an article – anything – about the 2019 Yamaha SRX, our views and responses on it go off the Richter scale!

Frankly, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen this kind of internet response to any new sled.

The truth is, this year, MY2019, Yamaha hasn’t exactly set the world on fire with new models. The fact is, the SRX was about the only new and exciting thing the company offered this year – but what a jackpot of interest it’s stirred up!

Is it cheap and bargain priced? Nope. This is one of the industry’s premium sleds and is priced that way.

Is it highly different than other SideWinders in the Yamaha barn? No, not a lot – it does sit lower, has a bit different calibration here and there and features an excellent rider-adjustable suspension, but other than that, its appeal seems to all be wrapped up in the nameplate and the colors Yamaha chose for it.

Its candy metallic blue looks a lot like the early ’00 SRX powered by one of the fastest 700 2-stroke triples ever built.

It seems those sleds are still very much top-of-mind with Yamaha-philes and one showroom visit to see the new one brings back fond memories of the old one.

If Yamaha could grasp how strong the admiration is for this sled, perhaps based on the past, then put it in a bag and spread it over more models, they could have a whole bunch of winners.

How about a Viper EX 1050 or a Phazer ET 800? Just sayin’.

What We Really Think of The EVO

0

We have to admit we were wrong about the EVO! At first we thought this was an answer to a question no one was asking. Turns out, the EVO is exactly what the market needs – and wants.

When we first saw it, we were surprised at how low it sat and, well… how small it looked.

It’s a common response when the industry has a new and different idea – especially when everything seems to center around super-performance sleds these days.

What’s so smart about the EVO is how it absolutely pirates the imagination of people who see it in the flesh, on the snow. This is especially true with teenage riders and women. We’ve witnessed this firsthand.

As for women checking it out, we were unaware how intimidating some full sized sleds are to them when they haven’t had much experience riding those conventional snowmobiles. Because the EVO sits so low to the ground and steers so easily – not to mention its mellow power output and user-friendly Power-Bloc clutching – suddenly their whole perspective on snowmobiling changes: They get excited about riding!

What we were also surprised about was how much fun an experienced rider can have on the EVO. With its speed limiter off, this sled is still capable of decent trail speeds and its handling and ride are still spot-on with any other Polaris based on the Pro-Ride chassis.

Its dual-carbed, fan-cooled twin makes an honest 60-hp and that amount of power easily propels the EVO down the trails and onto straightaways with plenty of exuberance.

It’s almost like going into a reverse time-warp, back when sleds were lower, more compact and easy to throw around. This sled is so responsive in both its power delivery and its handling, you start to find it irresistible.

Would it make a suitable second sled? You bet it would. The whole family could fall in love with it!

One suggestion: Invest in a mid-height windshield for it. You’ve come this far, no sense having the Missus complain about being cold!

How To Do Québec!

Everything You Need to Know About Planning Your Snowmobile Trip

Now that you’ve made the decision to visit Québec this winter, get ready for the ride of your life! Québec does winter like no one else and there are over 33,000 kms (20,500 miles) of gorgeous groomed trails running past some of the best winter scenery on earth, all of it waiting for you to discover.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, iMotoneige onto your smartphone, there are a few things you need to know to maximize your trip. Here’s a checklist of things you should be aware of:

1. Make sure you’ve received your FCMQ trail permit either in advance by mail (you can order it securely online) or before leaving your staging area by snowmobile (the inn or hotel where you’ve left your motor vehicle, trailer etc.). Be sure to carry both the sticker and your proof of purchase of the permit with you at all times. The sticker should be permanently mounted on the hood or windshield of your snowmobile.

2. Always carry your snowmobile’s provincial or state registration certificate with you and have an up-to-date license sticker clearly displayed on your snowmobile.

3. Have your driver’s license accessible at all times. You may be asked to display it at road crossings or when traveling to restaurants, gas stations or accommodations on road right-of-ways.

4. Make sure you can prove you have $500,000 minimum liability insurance coverage.

5. If you’re driving a rental snowmobile, always carry a copy of the rental contract with you on your trip.

6. If you are a rider 16 or 17 years of age, you’ll need to carry a “Competence and Knowledge Certificate” with you at all times. This document certifies the rider has completed a snowmobile driver-training course. However, it is not necessary if the rider has a valid state or provincial drivers license.

Here are a few more ideas to make your trip easier and more memorable:

a) Before leaving home, download iMotoneige to plan your daily itinerary.

b) Use the app or online map (snowmobileinquebec.com/trails) to find the addresses and phone numbers of the places you intend to stay at or visit. It’s wise to print a written copy of that information and carry it with you on your trip in case of battery failure or a lost phone.

c) Before you leave home, determine the distance you’ll be traveling each day of your trip and estimate the mileage the thirstiest snowmobile in your group will deliver. This helps with locating gasoline and food services and ensures you won’t be “running on empty”.

d) Use the app or maps to look for tourist information on the regions you’re visiting and details on getting to the sights you’d like to visit there.

Québec has more than 38 secure hotels and overnight accommodations where you can leave your snowmobiles, trailers and trucks safely. These places will have security features like a locked garage, locked enclosure, free security chains for the use of guests, video surveillance systems or security guard services. Look for these places on iMotoneige or the online map.

When viewing your Québec map, determine where you’d like to begin and end your trip. Starting at the right point in the region most accessible to you means less time driving before you start snowmobiling.

Keep in mind, your trail permit allows you to snowmobile anywhere in Québec and you can easily visit several regions in one tour depending on the time you have available and the term of your trail pass.

Check these regions out on your map and plan the shortest route to get to your starting point:

* Eeyou Istchee Baie-James

* Outaouais

* The Laurentians

* Abitibi-Témiscamingue

* Lanaudière – Mauricie

* Centre-du-Québec – Chaudière-Appalaches

* Gaspésie – Bas-Saint-Laurent – Côte-Nord

* Charlevoix – Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean – Québec City

Taking a little extra time to pre-plan the details of your trip will ensure your group will enjoy Québec even more! Not only that, but it’s so much fun talking about the destinations you’ll be seeing over the next few days and then actually riding there!

You can check the snow condition and snowfall and grooming and trail conditions daily before and during your trip by clicking on the snowflake icon at snowmobileinquebec.com/trails

PATRIOT or ETEC

0

Polaris shocked us when it pulled the sheets off the new 850 by claiming all 2019 Polaris snowmobiles with 850 Patriot power come with a transferable 4-year engine warranty. That’s a strong indication the Roseau engineering team got the Patriot right.

We would quantify this kind of long term coverage as tangible value. How much would a 5-year engine warranty cost if you had to buy it?

One look at the Patriot’s crank and bearings gives a clue to the strength of the engine. Its bearings measure 40 x 80mms compared to the 800’s 35 x 72mm! The new, beefier crank and bearings feed power to Polaris’ tried and durable primary clutch through an enlarged taper.

There’s also an all-new, jinormous drive belt built just for the 850. Polaris engineers have expressed a high level of confidence in both belt durability and clutch performance. A lot of this confidence comes from the new engine mounts and their orientation as compared to the 800 Liberty’s set-up.

Looking under the hood, the Patriot’s architecture is visually appealing with a rationalized, shrink-wrapped look to its cylinders. In fact, external cooling hoses have been eliminated by casting water passages internally.

The new VES exhaust valves use a smart servo-operated actuator and as a result are much more accurate than previous designs. Big Gulp 50mm throttle bodies feed a Polaris Cleanfire Semi-Direct Injection (SDI) system and the new 850 Patriot weighs-in just 6.5 pounds heavier than the 800 Liberty.

When speeds rise and the loud handle is fully compressed with both skis pointed up Kevlar Lake, the Patriot 850 feels stronger than the ETEC – not by a large margin, but it does feel like its pressing more meat into white top.

The 850 in the new Indy XC chassis with Pro CC shock-in-skid suspension, couples up hard under acceleration generating minimal weight transfer while the Gen 4 Ski-Doo’s later coupling rMotion allows for more wheelie action. Still the 850 Patriot feels convincingly strong.

We’ve ridden the new 850 Patriot in all its chassis variants at both sea level and altitude. We have ridden the 850 ETEC, in all its variants at both sea level and altitude. What we haven’t been able to do is ride Polaris and Ski-Doo variants head-to-head. This largely sucks but might actually be a good thing, short term.

Attempting to compare these 850s in West Yellowstone last February at 6000 to 9000 foot altitude would not be conclusive and that’s the only place we’ve had the two 850’s in one place at one time so far.

It is possible the new Patriot will run away from the Rotax 850. It’s possible, but if it does it’ll be close.

However, if you were Polaris and bringing a new engine to the market to compete with the known market leader’s 850, would you take advantage of the luxury of testing your new engine against Ski-Doo’s in-market engine and make any necessary adjustments or tweaks before going into production?

Herfindahl Wins At Cross-Country Opener

Fertile, MN (December 18, 2018) – Pine Lake, near Gonvick, Minnesota, traditionally has played host to the opening round of cross-country racing for decades. Usually a bitter cold experience, but this past weekend, December 15-16, racers and fans got a treat – two blue sky days with balmy temperatures. With little snow anywhere in the region, it was a pure ice lemans event with a lake course that rewarded speed, machine setup, and a rider who can rail through the corners.

Christian Brothers Racing ace cross-country rider Zach Herfindahl is one of the most decorated and most experienced Pro riders in the sport. He is entering 2018-2019 looking to recapture his all-dominant championship-winning form of two seasons ago. A win in Pro Open at Pine Lake marked a good start to the season, but belt problems and a 12th place finishing spot was not what the talented rider had in mind in the hotly-contested Pro Stock class.

“Our mod sled was working good and I got an early lead in the final,” Herfindahl said. “With a win in Pro Open we had a great start to the weekend. We qualified on the front row for the Pro Stock final and I had worked into the Top 3 before blowing a belt. After that we salvaged a 12th place. Overall it was positive, and it was a fun weekend with such great weather and so many riders.”

New to the Christian Brothers Racing cross-country team for 2018-2019, David Brown brings youth, speed and talent to the team in the Semi-Pro class. Brown went up against a deep field of more than 30 riders in that class, posting a 7th place finish in the final despite having brake problems. Brown also lined up in the Pro Open race where he took the 6th spot.

“I qualified 4th in Semi-Pro then in the final my brake got wet and froze,” Brown said. “With my brake not working I blew a few corners and lost a bunch of time, which dropped me down to 7th. Pro Open was fun, it was my first time on a mod sled, so I was pretty happy to get 6th place. It was a great first weekend with the team and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season!”

Next up for the Christian Brothers Racing cross-country team is the Turtle River Rough Rider 100, January 5, 2019, in Manvel, North Dakota. For more information on Christian Brothers Racing visit www.christianbrosracing.com. Follow Christian Brothers Racing on Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and Instagram.

QuébecOriginal – ADVENTURE IS CALLING YOU!

Nearly seventy years ago Québec snowmobile pioneers envisioned the idea to ride motorized vehicles over the snow. Winters were long and the snow was deep and soon, public, groomed trails became a reality.

Incredibly, an organized system of snow highways hadn’t been dreamed by anyone else but Québec up to that time.

When you visit the province today it doesn’t take long to see that the same kind of passion burns brightly. Riding Québec trails is still a world-class experience, truly second to no other! Ask any experienced touring snowmobiler and they’ll profess: When it comes to snowmobiling, Québec is the best place on earth!

Why? The province is blessed with incredible volumes of snow from early season until spring! There are more than 33,000 km (20,500 miles) of groomed trails here and trail adventures for every type of rider.

There are amazing landscapes and famous landmarks such as Percé Rock, the Chic-Choc Mountains, snowmobiling on Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, covered bridges and much, much more.

HERE’S A LIST OF OUR FAVOURITE REGIONS TO VISIT

Chaudière-Appalaches & Centre-du-Québec

Québec snowmobilers are always impressed with and surprised by both these regions’ luxurious destinations and world-class accommodation.

A distinctive particularity of these two regions is the possibility to loop back or create a “daisy” trail without having to ride the same trails over again.
