Jimmy Blaze Goes Big In Duluth

Press Release –

Freestyle superstar Jimmy Blaze signed autographs for fans at YRCC and kept the crowd on the edge of their seats, as he performed his popular show between races.

“Despite riding into a fierce headwind and having a 70-foot gap between his ramps, which is 20 feet longer than normal, Jimmy attempted his signature trick, the backflip,” explained Freestyle Manager Eric Josephsen.

“He has landed over 300 backflips in his career, but this time, due to conditions, he could not complete the trick. He was taken to the local hospital and released. The good news is that Jimmy Blaze is OK and will be back to ride again!”

YRCC resounding success

In addition to all the racing excitement of the first National race of the season, snocross fans also took in the Yamaha Racing Communications Center (YRCC) experience.

Hundreds of happy consumers had their photos taken sitting on the Factory FX Nytro Race sled, flanked by the fabulously beautiful Yamaha Snocross girls. Visitors can download their autograph stock photo at www.yamaha-motor.com/snocrossfanphotos.

Race fans also had the opportunity to get autographs from the Factory Snocross racers and Freestyle superstar Jimmy Blaze during their visit to the YRCC.

Arctic Cat Proud of Team Arctic Racers

Press Release –

Team Arctic racers aboard the all-new Arctic Cat Sno Pro 600 delivered a powerful message to the competition at the Duluth Minnesota National snocross: We’re here to win. And win they did, including an emphatic victory by Tucker Hibbert in the Pro Open class.

Team Arctic race manager Russ Ebert said, “We are really proud of Tucker and his Pro Open win. This is the premier class to showcase the OEMs latest equipment and your abilities to ride it. You could see Tucker’s confidence building as the weekend progressed and we knew it wouldn’t take him long to adapt to our new chassis.”

With little to no seat time prior to the opening race of the WPSA series aboard a completely new race sled, Team Arctic racers and teams spent much of their time learning about tuning the Sno Pro 600, making huge gains in suspension and handling as the weekend progressed.

“The Sno Pro 600 performed better than we could have hoped for,” said Brian Dick, the Arctic Cat Project Engineer responsible for the newest race sled. “It’s durability was excellent, as was the power and rider position. A few more weeks of testing and tuning will produce major improvements. Additional time spent on the all-new Sno Pro might prove tough for the competition. We are competing and beating sleds that have already seen competition; one as many as three years. That speaks volumes for our new Sno Pro.”

With a race program that focuses on all forms of competition, including cross-country, hillclimb, drag, oval and enduro, Team Arctic personnel were more than pleased with the Spirit National results.

“We support all forms of racing, which means we can’t match the entries that some of the other brands push in snocross,” said Ebert. “Beyond our Pro and Semi Pro teams, we have a very talented group of Sport Super Stock (SSS) riders. Dusty Miller got first place and Cody Thomsen landed on the podium twice with a second and third in both SSS classes.

To accomplish that aboard an all-new sled is simply awesome! It’s going to be a great race season. The next chance to get a glimpse of the Team Arctic snocross racers aboard the new Sno Pro will be in Shakopee, MN at Canterbury Park, January 11-13.

Polaris Switchback 600: Off-Trail Handling

0

Here’s an inside look at how the Polaris Switchback 600 tackles ditches, untramped lakes and open play areas. Read on:

Forget about the 144-inch Switchbacks of the past. This 136-inch IQ exceeds the performance and maneuverability of the 144 by a wide margin on lakes, in ditches or when carving up powder snow.

The IQ’s handling in the deep stuff is in no small way linked to its exceptional mill. This section isn’t about power but it’s clear, the SB 600 is in love with its engine. So are we.

The SB is happiest stretching its legs on big pulls down Kevlar Lake. The extra flotation of the longer sneaker combines with nice weight balance and the IQ’s variable castor IFS.

This varying spindle castor responds to the sled’s extended front suspension in deep snow by straightening up the spindles. This promotes stronger steering response in the loose stuff with virtually no nervousness.

The long track ergos are well suited to flatland deep snow running with a comfy bend on the fixed handlepole handlebars. Polaris heard our crowing about the absence of hookers on base model prototype Switchbacks and responded.

They’re now standard equipment on the production line models. A nice functional windshield and well thought out intake plumbing keep snow off the rider and out of the airbox.

There’s a marked improvement in handling with this new 136-inch skid versus the overly-long-for-flatland-deep-snow-use 144 unit used since 2004. The sled can be powder hooked, thrown around in ditches and turned end-to-end in much tighter quarters now.

What didn’t we like about the new SB? Not much. However, here’s the problem: The Crossfire is a purpose-built deep snow weapon and the XP is just too light to ignore.

In actual fact the Switchback is the third lightest Crossover in this comparo but in this category of comparison – deep snow, we like it second best.

The Yamaha Minocqua Race Team

Press Release –

The Yamaha Minocqua Race Team, working under Team Manager Masa Saito, is fielding Pro rider Yuji Nakazawa.

“The Minocqua team has Yuji working closely with the Yamaha engineers to develop ideas for possible future production,” says Marier. “They will be focused on product development closely based on the FX Nytro and hit select races depending on their testing goals.”

“We are determined to face the challenges head-on,” added Saito. “We will continue to compete against the 2-stroke sleds on the race track as we continue to develop our 4-stroke-powered FX Nytro.”

Nakazawa, who has been working with Yamaha on the four-stroke project for three years, says “The sled gets better all the time. I raced Pro Open at Duluth, but didn’t make the final. I went 6-6-3 over the weekend. In the last round I got the holeshot and led until I was passed by two riders to finished third. I really like the FX Nytro racer, and look forward to racing at Park X and the next national at Shakopee. The finale at Lake Geneva will be really great for us because the four-stroke engine makes such good power that it will work very, very well on the uphills.”

Snowmobile Safety Always Top-of-Mind Awareness

Press Release –

Snowmobiling is in full stride around the world and now is the time for snowmobilers to keep snowmobile safety a top-of-mind awareness issue.

Snowmobile safety is nothing new to organized snowmobiling. Snowmobile Administrators, the Manufacturers, snowmobile associations and clubs joined together years ago in developing the Safe Riders “You make snowmobiling safe” safety campaign which brought safe snowmobiling practices, training and enforcement to a new level.

The Safe Riders! campaign, designed by snowmobilers for snowmobilers is financially supported by the snowmobile manufacturers. The campaign includes safety related materials such as decals, posters, the Safe Riders! DVD, public service announcements, and more.

Millions of Safe Riders! Snowmobiling Fact Books and posters have been distributed throughout the world to safety trainers and clubs and associations – free of charge- from the manufacturers’ ISMA office.

Thousands of the Safe Riders! “You make snowmobiling safe” 22-minute safety DVDs have been sent to safety trainers and safety minded snowmobilers worldwide. The DVD is an excellent adjunct tool for snowmobile safety classes. They are available by contacting the ISMA Office through our web site www.snowmobile.org .

This year, International Snowmobile Safety Week is January 13-19, 2008. A Safety Week Manual has been designed to give clubs and associations guidance in how to plan and hold safety programs.

The Safety Week Manual can be downloaded from the ISMA Website . The campaign is only as good as the instructors and the support received from the community. Thankfully the instructor base is expanding and the support of government and enforcement officials is exceptional.

Snowmobiling accidents and fatalities have continued to decline over the past three years and statistics show there is more than a 30% reduction in accidents and fatalities while snowmobiling over the last 6 years.

The Safe Riders! campaign highlights key issues of importance for snowmobile safety. The position statements are concise and easy to understand. They include:

1. Snowmobiling and Alcohol don’t mix – don’t drink and ride
2. When night riding slow down – expect the unexpected
3. Know before you go – always check local ice conditions
4. Cross all roads with care – don’t become road-kill
5. One is the loneliest number – never ride alone
6. Know the risks and be prepared – make every trip a round trip
7. Ride smart ride right – stay in control
8. Smart Riders are Safe Riders – always take snowmobile safety training

Recreational snowmobiling has become the winter recreation lifestyle choice for millions of families worldwide. We encourage all snowmobilers to take a minute and make safety a top-of-mind awareness issue. Familiarize yourself with your snowmobile and the area that you will be riding, dress properly, and follow the above mentioned campaign guidelines.

Please remember if you would like any of the Safe Riders! posters, decals, fact books or the safety DVD please visit www.snowmobile.org and let us know.

Yamaha Factory 4-strokes: Round One In Duluth

Press Release –

The Yamaha Factory Snocross team and its new FX Nytro® race sleds made their debut performance at the opening round of the WPSA Snocross series, the Amsoil Duluth National Snocross in Duluth, MN, Nov. 23-25.

Pro riders Steve Taylor of Prince George, BC and Yuji Nakazawa from Shizuoka, Japan were joined by Swedish National Snocross champ, Johan Eriksson, who was flown in from Sweden to fill in for injured Semi-Pro Cory Davis.

The first round of the season is a test for any team and the Yamaha Factory Snocross crew was kept busy making adjustments and finalizing setup.

“We want to showcase our high performance four-stroke engine and develop its capability under National-level snocross racing,” said Yamaha Factory Snocross Team Manager Greg Marier. “Not only have we been working on four-stroke power potential but also on developing the chassis and suspension around that four-stroke power.”

Steve Taylor is pleased with his first outing on the FX Nytro racer in national-caliber competition. “I went 4-3-4, and if I had a third in the last one I would have went right into the final but I had to go to the LCQ,” he said. “The course was gnarly, that’s the only way I can put it. No enormous holes, but there were lots of square-edged kickers everywhere and I saw people fighting them all day. I’ve been working with Fox Racing®, and our suspension gets better all the time.”

Things looked good going into the LCQ, where Taylor was in a good position to make the transfer until a drive axle sprocket spun on its shaft causing a crash that put him out of the race. “This was a really good day…besides the crash,” Taylor says.

Taylor is tough, and Marier says “I’m really impressed with Steve’s conditioning. He’s in top-notch shape, and he’s really shown that he has what it takes this weekend. Despite the challenges, Steve still came out of the weekend with 32 points.”

“Everybody worked really hard to keep the team moving forward and we had some decent results,” said a very-stoked Taylor after the races. “This engine hauls! They have that thing working really well and it doesn’t miss a beat. The weight isn’t too far off the two-strokes and though I’m not a big guy I don’t have trouble throwing it around. We’ll be good to go for testing and regional races over the next few weeks before the next national, and things will just keep getting better!”

Johan Eriksson has been racing sleds for 14 years, and was very happy to get some time on the new sled before his own season starts in Europe this January.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to come over here and meet the team and race the new four-stroke,” says Eriksson. “I’m not used to the suspension and handling yet, but we are making adjustments and the sled keeps getting better with each race. I finished 5-2-5 in Semi-Pro Open. As far as the motor goes, nothing beats it! Unbelievable!”

Eriksson is a tall rider (6’ 5”), and Marier says the team has been busy making ergonomic changes including a taller seat and handlebars that will undoubtedly help put the Swede up front in coming weeks.

Inside at Spirit Mountain

0

Online Exclusive By: Kent Lester

Last weekend’s season opener in Duluth, Minnesota was a real eye opener for snocross fans.

With this year’s hype at an all-time high to see the all-new race equipment from Ski-Doo, Arctic Cat and Yamaha, the Spirit Mountain crowd were completely wired to see what the new stuff could do.

On Saturday it was all Polaris with Ross Martin leading the pack in Stock Class followed by Dennis Eckstrom and a very fast, up and coming Mike Schultz.

TJ Gulla and a revived Levi LaVallee led sixth place finisher, Tucker Hibbert, to the tape. Tucker was the highest non-Polaris Stock Class finisher and rode hard to get there.

Polaris’ steady approach to refining and perfecting its IQ race chassis has paid off with solid results and there is no question Polaris will be the team to beat again this season.

The new Arctic Cat SnoPro looks very much like a Polaris on-track but features Cat’s own unique design with extremely long front A-arms and a new 600 engine that looks to have decent potential to win.

On Sunday, Tucker got a poor start in the Open Final and drove his way past tough competitors like Ross Martin, Schultz, Morgan and Gulla to lead by a wide margin. Tucker proved his reputation as an iron man as he literally willed the Mod Cat past the herd.

This guy can dominate and believe us there will be some exciting racing this season with him in the mix. Following Hibbert were LaVallee, Martin, Eckstrom, Schultz and Gulla, all on Polaris sleds.

Ski-Doo had a tough day and it appears the short prep time its riders had prior to the event really hurt the team.

Spirit has a reputation as being an early season proving ground and the Ski-Doo team was sent back to the trailer to find more power and make refinements to get back into the hunt.

Yamaha fared much worse. Its new Nytro 4-stroke race sled failed to qualify for the Open Final. Looks like more time and some tweaking will be in order for the team.
