ELLIOT LAKE – Tailored For Snowmobilers

0

By Mike Lester

The city of Elliot Lake, Ontario lies only about five hours from the Greater Toronto Area and a short 2-hour drive from the Michigan border at Sault St. Marie.

The area boasts some of Ontario’s best early season snow coverage and Elliot Lake should never be dismissed as a sleepy one-horse town. This was once a booming mining community and, at one time, carried a population upwards of 30,000 people. At the height of its boom, Elliot Lake was world renowned as the Uranium Capital of the World.

Today, the annual population of the city rests at a healthy 12,500 proud locals. It’s a Northern Ontario city where the snow is great and its infrastructure comfortably caters to visiting snowmobilers. As a community, there are few that do it better than Elliot Lake. There’s even a Tim Horton’s, which for our American friends is like Starbucks north.

Beautifully groomed trails maintained by the Elliot Lake Snowbirds snowmobile club lead in and around the city so access to local areas is made easy. This group of dedicated volunteers does an excellent job of keeping the trail system smooth, well signed and beautiful.

Park your truck and trailer in the spacious and well-lit parking lot of the Algo Inn and ride right from there to hundreds of miles of loop trails that surround the community.

Our ride not only took us on some of Ontario’s best trails but to an incredibly scenic lookout within twenty miles of the city that let us see the country for miles around.

There’s a strong sense of community pride in Elliot Lake that makes you want to visit again and again. Its inhabitants genuinely understand and love snowmobiling. You shouldn’t be surprised to find yourself striking up random conversations at trailside with other sledders you meet on your ride.

You’ll be greeted with a warm and friendly smile at any of the local establishments; it’s amazing how much this community is developed with shopping, hospitals, golf courses and residential areas, but has still been able to maintain its wonderful northern town hospitality.

For a city that continues to grow and develop, Elliot Lake has maintained all the warmth and charm of a small town and should definitely be on your list of visits this season.

Top 5 Finishes For Byers Motorsports Racers

Press Release –

This past weekend’s races took place at Georgian Downs in Barrie, only 25 minutes south of Orillia. Being so close to the Teams hometown, Jamie and Kyle’s friends, family, sponsors and fans came out to support and cheer them on.

Once again this weekend, Kyle was on the throttle nailing the starts with his Dayco drive belt. Saturdays Sport 600, Moto 1, Kyle lead the first lap, chose a bad line on the split back section loosing 2 positions finishing 3rd.

In Moto 2, he lead the race from start to finish, but because of a flagging error the race had to be re-run. This didn’t affect his results as he came out and won the race again qualifying him second for the night final. He was first off the start again, but fell back a few positions in the extended 7 lap final, finishing 4th.

With no practice on Sunday Kyle went into Moto 1 having to find new lines and rhythms to the track, finishing 4th. Moto 2 Kyle’s sled stood straight in the air off the start making him have to let off.

He worked his way through the pack for the win, qualifying him front row for the final. Kyle nailed the start for the holeshot award, being in and out of the first corner. His lead was short lived getting passed by a rider going into the second corner. Kyle battled for 3rd the whole race and was able to hold on for the podium finish.

Semi-Pro Open action took place on Saturday starting in the day light and ending with the final under the lights. The mod sled was pulling great starts all day putting Jamie up front. Jamie was running 3rd in moto 1 before coming out of an icy corner, catching the snow sideways and throwing him off the sled.

He was able to get back up quickly to finish 5th. He finished 3rd in moto 2 after getting another great start. Qualifying 6th for the final, Jamie lined up to the start feeling confident. Off the start it was Jamie and the number 87 Cat nailing the holeshot at almost a dead even run out of the first corner into the triple.

Jamie got pushed out at the next corner putting him back to 5th. Jamie passed his way to 4th where he ran majority of the 10 lap final. He made a mistake on the last lap allowing 5th catch up. They made a side-by-side charge to the checkered flag for a photo finish but came a ski tip short finishing 5th.

For Sunday’s Semi-Pro stock class, the track layout and start line changed. Jamie finished 3rd in Moto 1. In moto 2, Jamie passed for the lead on lap 2 but was short lived after a “bobble” allowing him to get passed finishing 2nd. With a 2nd and 3rd finish qualifying 5th for the final, Jamie lined himself up in the middle.

Jamie was one of the top riders to the first corner but got pushed out and held up coming out of the corner back in 12th. Charging hard, Jamie picked off riders every lap getting closer to the front finishing 6th.

The next race for the team is the ISOC affiliated National event in Sarnia at Hiawatha Horse Park this weekend.

Early Release of Polaris Pro-RMK 155

0

Staff Report

In 2011 Polaris is sending a powerful message it intends to be the dominant force in the vertical market with lighter, stronger deep snow platforms and class leading power-to-weight.

The introduction of an all-new 2011 RMK based on the RUSH Blackjack front clip married to a conventional track system at the rear makes a strong case for the company’s determination.

The 800 Pro-RMK 155 uses the super-strong chemically bonded construction process pioneered on the Rush to eliminate welds and rivets and nets an incredibly rigid chassis with significant weight savings.

Further weight has been dropped with reductions to the jackshaft, disc brake rotor, bumpers, tunnel, snowflap (now perforated), seat support and exhaust silencer.

The most obvious departure on the Pro-RMK compared to the Rush is the use of a shock-in-tunnel skidframe featuring a Camoplast 15×155 track with enormous 2.4-inch lugs.

Power is supplied by a 2-injector Cleanfire 800 2-stroke – the first application of this engine in this chassis.

Polaris claims a 40-lb weight reduction compared to last year’s IQ-based RMK and even more important, a 10-lb reduction in weight compared to its lightest competitor.

On closer inspection you can see how the product planners and engineers have rationalized every component on this sled to reach the lightness goal line.

You’ll get more details and some great photos on the complete RMK line-up in the March edition of the Supertrax online magazine. Stay tuned!

Polaris Donates Sled to MN Landscape Arboretum

Press Release –

Low-Emission FS IQ WideTrak Utility Model Provides Excellent Power

Trail grooming and winter utility work at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum will be accomplished in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner with the new four-stroke utility snowmobile donated today by Polaris.

The low-emission FS IQ WideTrak utility snowmobile will allow the arboretum staff to groom cross-country ski trails and snowshoe trails, and complete winter chores such as maintaining fences erected to keep deer from feeding on arboretum trees.

“We are thrilled with this donation by Polaris and thankful to have a machine that’s much more efficient and really fits with our ‘Green at Heart’ initiative,” said Professor and Interim Arboretum Director Mary Meyer. “We had no budget for the purchase of this machine, so we are very grateful to Polaris for this wonderful donation.”

Polaris CEO Scott Wine said the company welcomed the opportunity to support one of Minnesota’s most popular attractions. “At Polaris, we’re all outdoors lovers and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum is one of the most beautiful, relaxing and educational sites of its kind in the country,” he said. “Our 4-stroke FS IQ WideTrak is ideal for the arboretum’s needs and its sustainability initiative, and we are pleased to support them with this contribution.”

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, which is part of the University of Minnesota, is the largest public garden in the Upper Midwest and a premier northern arboretum.

Located in the Minneapolis suburb of Chanhassen, the arboretum features more than 1,000 acres of gardens, model landscapes and natural areas such as woodlands, wetlands and prairie, as well as extensive collections of northern-hardy plants.

In warm weather, the arboretum grounds feature over 12 miles of paths and trails as well as a scenic Three-Mile Drive. In winter, there are 9 miles of cross-country ski trails and 3.5 miles of snowshoe trails. These trails, especially the cross-country trails, have previously been groomed using an old, unreliable V-8-powered machine that taxes both the environment and arboretum mechanics’ repair skills.

“We had been grooming with a 1966 machine called the Super Imp that’s very inefficient and we were constantly repairing it,” Meyer said. “A mechanic worked on it regularly all winter, and parts were nearly impossible to find. We were thrilled when Polaris offered to donate a snowmobile.”

She said the FS IQ WideTrak will allow more frequent grooming of the cross-country ski trails, as well as expanded initial grooming of the snowshoe trails, some of which run in remote areas the old machine couldn’t access.

“Since the Polaris snowmobile is so much lighter than the other machine, we’ll be able to groom more often,” she said. “The other machine was so heavy, you didn’t want to groom too often because the tracks would actually dig into the ground. Our cross-country ski trails are heavily used, especially in light of recent snowfalls, and were in dire need of a new grooming machine.”

Since learning of the Polaris donation, the arboretum staff has been looking forward to taking delivery of the FS IQ WideTrak, which has a clean, powerful, quiet and efficient four-stroke engine.

It also has electric start, reverse, Hi and Low forward ranges, underseat storage, a tow hitch, heated glove box, heated handgrips and thumb warmer, mirrors, a tall and protective windshield and a wide track that delivers excellent flotation and traction.

BOSS Racing Report

Press Release –

Thursday- Justin Hoyer stuck Gold in the Freestyle Snocross Feature with the help of BOSS Racing crew chief, Ryan Duncan who tuned Hoyer’s sled in advance of the huge event.

Friday- Turcotte looked strong during practice and the crew was happy with the sled set-up and performance.

Sunday- First round of qualifying for BOSS was Heat 2, with Turcotte finishing a strong 2nd place behind Tucker Hibbert.

BOSS hosted amputee Travis Gravelle during the Adapted Snocross Feature. Travis left the line 4th, entering a brutal track; he hit a bump hard during competition causing his artificial limb to breakaway. After a brief delay he suited back up, crashed hard again and did not finish the final.

Turcotte was up next in the Snocross Main- Turcotte came off the line in and into the first corner in 2nd place, then collided with Tucker Hibbert in turn 2 losing momentum.

Five sleds passed putting Turcotte in 6th place at the end of the first lap. He dropped to 7th on a tough wet sticky track, which he held until the final lap, when another sled collided with Brett, sending him back to finish in 11th place.

BOSS Athletes and crew would like to thank Dragon Alliance our newest sponsor, and marketing guru Alex Pashley for the high performing eyewear.

THREE VICTORIES (SO FAR) FOR WANDERSCHEID

Press Release –

Racing’s Premier Oval Racer Goes on a Tear

When it comes to Friday Night oval racing, DRIFT Racing’s P.J. Wanderscheid has been all but unbeatable this season.

At the Eagle River World Championship Friday Night Thunder program, Wanderscheid won his heat race and the coveted Champ 440 final in convincing fashion. Better still, the Team Arctic champion was wearing special pink DRIFT Authority race gear that, after his win, he autographed and donated as auction items to the Pink Ribbon Riders.

Two days after winning Friday Night Thunder, Wanderscheid finished second in the Champ 440 World Championship final.

“Second place in the World Championships is a solid result,” said the three-time World Champ. “The truth is that we go there to win, which we did convincingly in the Friday Night program but, unfortunately, not in the title event.”

Clearly unsatisfied with anything less than winning, Wanderscheid left Eagle River intent to dominate the rest of the season. In Wausau, Wis., Wanderscheid stamped his authority by handily winning Champ 440.

A week later, in his hometown of Sauk Center, Minn., Wanderscheid claimed the Friday Night Champ Shootout. He was about to back it up with a dominating victory in the Champ 440 final on Sunday when a blown belt on the final lap cost him the win. “We’ve won our class in three of the four weekends we’ve raced this season,” said Wanderscheid. “We have three or four more races remaining, and it’s my goal to win at each of them.”

See the DRIFT Racing/Team Arctic-sponsored Wanderscheid Race team Feb. 13-14 in Weyauwega, Wis., and Feb. 19-21 in Grey Eagle, Minn.

TEAM ARCTIC WINS FIRST-EVER SOO 500 ENDURO

Press Release –

Cadarette Racing’s Troy Dewald and Jeff Leuenberger Overcome the Soo Hex

It took a racer with a broken shoulder to finally knock the monkey off Team Arctic’s back at the Soo International 500 enduro in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich.

Piloting a 2010 Arctic Cat Sno Pro 600 while nursing a broken shoulder blade, Troy Dewald and his Cadarette Racing teammate Jeff Leuenberger broke the 42-year hex to finally put Arctic Cat atop the world’s most prestigious snowmobile enduro race.

“The Arctic Cat family of dealers, racers and race fans extends a huge high-five to Dewald, Leuenberger and the whole Cadarette racing team,” said Mike Kloety, Team Arctic Race Manager. “Aided by the never-say-die attitude of team owner Greg Cadarette, these two amazing racers overcame incredible adversity to win. The pride we feel toward them is immense.”

The greatest adversity wasn’t history, rather it was the crash sustained on Thursday while testing for the race. The result: Dewald’s broken right scapula and a seriously tweaked race sled just two days before the Soo 500, which put into doubt their ability to race let alone win for the second-consecutive year.

“The pain was terrible and that made this win extra special,” said Dewald, who started from the pole position and raced an estimated 200 of the 500 laps. “We came close to scrapping the program. To come back after that big crash makes this feel great. The sled was all bent and the crew worked feverishly on it,” said Leuenberger. “Troy just said he would tough it out. I can’t believe he was able to ride as much as he rode.” About Arctic Cat
