CHECKERED FLAGS WAVING FOR TEAM ARCTIC’S RACERS

The checkered flag of victory continued to wave for Team Arctic cross-country and snocross racers, who combined to take 44 first-place finishes during a weekend of terrain competition.

Team Green remains the undisputed king of cross-country, and their performance at the USXC Thief River Falls 300 reinforced the fact with 17 of 21 class wins, 40 of 63 podium placing’s (including seven podium sweeps).

Wes Selby continued his victory parade by winning the hard-fought Pro Stock class. Team Arctic captured six of the top-10 positions, with Cody Kallock, Timmy Kallock, Chad Lian, Jordan Torgerson and Ryan Trout earning the honors.

Other Thief River Falls 300 class winners include Timmy Kallock, Jeremy Grove, Jon Arneson, Matt Feil, Jolene Bute, Brandon Wolter, Ean Voigt, David Brown, Savannah Landrus, Karl Mattison, James Mattison, Mike Mattison and Gerry Mattison.

Team Arctic showed its depth and resolve by scoring four wins at the ISOC snocross national in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. Tucker Hibbert led the way with a win in Pro Open, while Logan Christian maintained his torrid pace to score another podium.

Trent Wittwer, Ryley Bester and CJ Petosky also scored wins at Mt. Pleasant for Team Arctic. In all, Team Arctic racers notched 15 podium positions at the penultimate stop of the 2015 ISOC National tour.

“Our racers and crews continue to deliver outstanding results aboard the ProCross-based ZR race sleds,” said Mike Kloety, Team Arctic Race Manager. “We dominated the two-day, 300-mile cross-country in convincing fashion, and we held tough in Mt. Pleasant with key class victories and podiums. With just one remaining weekend of USXC cross-country and a final weekend of ISOC National snocross, many Team Arctic racers are on the verge of winning year-end championship points battles.”

The final race of the USXC season is March 7-8 in Warroad, Minn. The last stop of the ISOC National season is March 13-15 in Lake Geneva, Wis.

POLARIS HILL CLIMB RESULTS

Polaris snowmobile hillclimbers on RMK deep snow sleds ruled at the RMSHA Afton [WY] Hillclimb on Feb. 28, as they won 11 of 12 Pro classes – including all four Stock and all four Modified classes – and they swept all three Pro King of the Hill titles.

Polaris Pro-class racers filled 26 of 36 podium spots (72%), including 11 of 12 in the four Stock classes, where the Polaris racers compete on nearly stock RMK deep snow models like those available at Polaris dealerships.

At Afton, which was the second event of the Rocky Mountain States Hillclimb Assn. season, six different Polaris hillclimbers won Pro class titles, and four racers won multiple classes:

– Keith Curtis won three classes (600 Stock, 1000 Stock, Open Modified), reached the podium in all five of his classes, and won the Stock King of the Hill title.
– David Sharp, Jr., won two classes (1000 Improved Stock, 800 Modified) and won both the Improved Stock King of the Hill and Modified King of the Hill crowns.
– Aaron Sterck won the 700 Improved Stock class en route to earning a podium finish in all five of his classes.
– Luke Rainey won the 700 Stock and 800 Stock titles and earned two seconds.
– Erin Beukelman won the 800 Improved Stock and 700 Modified classes.
– Michael Crockett won the 600 Modified title and took third in 700 Improved Stock.

Also reaching the podium with second-place finishes in the Pro classes were Justin Thomas, Les Keller, and Brandon Titensor, and Cole Willford and Dolan Phelps scored third-places.
Polaris Racers Win Pro Masters & Semi-Pro Crowns

In the Pro Masters classes, Dennis Durmas won the Modified class and was second in Improved Stock, and Charles Lopeman won the Stock class.

Polaris racer Tanner Meyers won the Semi-Pro Stock class and took Semi-Pro Stock King of the Hill honors, while Jason Fox won the Semi-Pro Modified class.

In the Amateurs class, Polaris racers Derek Bair, Johnathon Durmas, and Rick Marshall finished 1-2-3, respectively, and Polaris racers swept the top 10 spots. Johnathon Durmas also won the Juniors class.

The next hillclimb on the RMSHA schedule is the Pinedale, Wyoming, hillclimb on March 7-8.

LYNX WINTER ADVENTURES IN EUROPE AND RUSSIA

The Lynx Commander Touratech sled was developed in co-operation with Touratech AG, a world-leading motorcycle adventure gear manufacturer.

Extremely Sporty Xtrim sled

Another novelty in the crossover segment is the Lynx Xtrim RE 800R E-TEC snowmobile – the sportiest Lynx crossover sled of all times. It features a 3,487-mm PowderMax track, all-new Blade DS skis, a Rotax 800R E-TEC engine, and the high capacity KYB shocks also found in the renowned Lynx Rave RE sport sleds. The Xtrim RE sled is a combination of the Lynx racing heritage and innovations in deep-snow riding. It has been designed for experienced, thrill- seeking riders for aggressive riding on and off trail.

BoonDocker Upgrades

The 2016 Lynx BoonDocker deep-snow sport line-up is wider than ever and introduces major updates that contribute to lightness and nimbleness, maintaining the stability and climbing ability that BoonDocker sleds are known for. All BoonDocker models now feature the A-LFS+ front suspension, PPS2-DS rear suspension with new slide rails, and new Blade DS skis that have been designed especially for deep-snow riding. The new BoonDocker DS 4100 800R E-TEC model introduces the 4,414-mm long track with a 74-mm track profile. RIDING THE 2016 SKI-DOO MX-Z BLIZZARD

Ski-Doo’s new Blizzard is similar in many ways to the MX-Z TNT line-up but offers several features you can’t get on a TNT. We’ll explain.

The Blizzard uses the new 129-inch track and skidframe standard on all 2016 MX-Zs with the exception of the TNT and the Sport series.

Although its non-reservoir shock package is exactly the same as the 120-inch TNT, the Blizzard’s use of the new, longer track enhances its bite and its braking considerably.

Riding the Blizzard generated absolutely no sensation of handling compromise and the sled feels every bit as nimble as a 120-incher and definitely turns in quicker than a 137.

The Blizzard’s rMotion skidframe is calibrated impeccably and we felt it was much more compliant than the XR-S and even the X-Series when riding stutters and normal trail junk at speed ranges from 30 to 50-mph. Keep in mind the Blizzard shock package does not include damping adjustability.

The front end is great at absorbing impacts at the above speeds and the whole thing adds up to a sled that rides beautifully under about 75-percent of trail conditions.

Speaking of the front end, the combo of RAS 2’s higher roll center and the new Pilot TS adjustable skis Ski-Doo has come up with for MY2016 provides very precise cornering in soft snow, hard-pack and even icy conditions.

There is a 5-lb weight penalty (per ski) with TS (tuneable skis) but after riding with them, we’d find it difficult to go back to regular skis again. It’s pretty clear this feature is targeted at trail riders and not off-trail riders riding powder and obsessed with extra weight. However, in its wheelhouse (trails) it’s a fabulous addition and worth the extra bucks.

One feature we felt was huge on the Blizzard is its standard-issue Ice-Ripper track. Ski-Doo is including this track in many of its sleds this year on its early-order programs and even in-season sleds and it makes an incredible difference.

With steel “studlets” (new word) imbedded at the tips of the track’s lugs, it gets excellent grip both going forward and sideways and has the potential to be a lifesaver when grabbing the brakes on icy trails. This is a feature we’d like to see on every sled someday.

The Blizzard is available with choices of 600 and 800 E-TECs (we didn’t notice any appreciable difference in engine performance this year but feel the Ice-Ripper will add to acceleration specs), the 900 ACE 4-stroke and the 1170cc 4-TEC with new Intelligent Throttle Control (iTC).

BRP ADDS MORE COLORS TO SKI-DOO MODELS

In response to dealer input, BRP has added two new colors to the 2016 Ski-Doo model line-up plus an upgraded reverse feature.

Spring buyers for the Summit X can now choose from the new Matte Black/Lava Red color combination, Matte Black/Sunburst Yellow option or Black option.

Riders looking for the new Renegade Enduro model will be able to choose from a new Black look or Northern Lichen.

In addition those Enduro buyers choosing the 900 ACE or 1200 4- TEC w/iTC engine will get an Electro-mechanical reverse for easier operation.

Polaris Racers Win Iron Dog

Polaris Racers Scott Faeo & Eric Quam Win Iron Dog Cross-Country Race Across Alaska On Pair of 600 Switchback Models Built on Innovative AXYS Platform. Winners Extend Lead Throughout Second Half of Race, Win by Over 45 Minutes

In the ultimate demonstration of Polaris Terrain Domination, Polaris cross country snowmobile racers Scott Faeo and Eric Quam won the Iron Dog race across Alaska on Saturday, Feb. 28, on a pair of 2015 600 Switchback PRO-S models built on the innovative AXYS platform.

Faeo and Quam led for more than half of the 2,031-mile race on some of the most varied snow conditions in race history. Racers encountered long stretches of bare ground early in the race, and rode through water-covered streets when they arrived at the race’s midway point in Nome. They then raced out of Nome as a snowstorm swept in off the coast.

Faeo and Quam started the final day’s run from Tanana to Fairbanks with a lead of 32 minutes, 31 seconds over the second-place team. They increased that lead en route to the finish line in downtown Fairbanks and won by a margin of 45:55 over the runners-up.

Polaris teams dominated the race as they finished first and third, earned six top-10 finishing positions, and took 10 of the top 16 spots. Racers on Polaris sleds have won two straight Iron Dog races and five of the past seven.

The Polaris team of Iron Dog rookie Allen Hill and veteran Marc McKenna reached the midway point in fifth place, but surged in the second half of the race to finish third on a pair of 2015 600 Switchback PRO-S models built on the AXYS platform. Hill and McKenna finished 31 minutes behind the second-place team.

Faeo Joins Father as Iron Dog Winner

Faeo, 31, earned his first Iron Dog victory on his third try in the Pro class, and became the first second-generation winner in Iron Dog history. His father John Faeo is a seven-time Iron Dog winner who won six times on Polaris sleds, including the first-ever Iron Dog in 1984. In 2014, Scott Faeo finished 10th with teammate Gabe Bunke, a Polaris cross country and enduro racer. Quam, 44, finished for the ninth time in his Pro-class career and was on the winning team in 2008.

Faeo and Quam earned $50,000 for the victory, and Hill and McKenna earned $20,000 for their third-place finish. The winners completed the race, which ran from Anchorage to Nome to Fairbanks, in 41 hours, 46 minutes, 52 seconds of running time for an average speed of 49 mph.

Six of the top 10 teams to finish were on Polaris sleds

– Cody Barber and Brett Lapham, a pair of Iron Dog rookies, finished fifth
– Veterans Shane Barber and Ryan Sottosanti finished seventh
– Robert Strick and Steffen Strick finished in ninth place
– Tyler Huntington and Todd Palin – two racers with a combined six Iron Dog wins – were 10th

Polaris Leads at the Midway Point

The Iron Dog is a two-part race, with teams racing to the midway point of Nome, taking one day off to rest and work on their sleds, then racing to the finish line in Fairbanks. The day off includes a first-half awards banquet, and the Polaris team of Faeo and Quam won the $10,000 Gold Rush award for being the fastest Pro-class team to reach Nome.

At the midway point, five of the top 10 teams were on Polaris sleds, as were 11 of the top 19. Cody Barber and Lapham were in fourth at Nome, and Hill and McKenna were in fifth. Shane Barber and Sottosanti were in ninth, and Huntington and Palin were in 10th.

Trail Class Riders Reach Nome

In the Iron Dog race, Trail class racers run from the start in Big Lake and finish in Nome. Their goal is primarily to complete the run to Nome on Tuesday of race week. Several Trail class racers on Polaris sleds successfully did so, including:

– Charles Darnell, an Iron Dog rookie on a 600 Switchback
– Joseph Kiren, a rookie on a 600 Switchback Adventure built on the AXYS platform
– Mark Meuser, a veteran on a 600 Switchback Adventure on the AXYS platform
– Bernard Droege, a rookie on a 600 Switchback PRO-S on the AXYS platform

AXYS SKS 155

If This Is the Starting Point, Then Look Out!

Polaris has utilized nearly all the new features of the Pro-RMK in the new AXYS Snow King Special (SKS) but it uses chaincase drive instead of QuickDrive.

This new-from-the-snow-up model is available with a 155-inch track and has the complete AXYS bulkhead with the lower mounted 800 HO, new brake, new front end and rationalized 2016 skidframe.

It uses a set of Walker-Evans clicker gas piggybacks up front and has four extra idler wheels in the skidframe to assist with icy or hard-packed snow conditions. It offers the same 39-41-inch adjustable ski stance as the Pro-RMK.

The SKS is available with choices of Series 5 (2.4-inch lug), Series 6 (2.6) or a Peak 155-incher (2.25). This sled also uses an extra bulkhead cooler up front to assist with marginal snow conditions.

RMK ASSAULT 155

Powered by the 800 HO, and using all the new AXYS chassis features of the new Pro-RMK, the RMK Assault is as hardcore as it gets for freeriding and boondocking.

Equipped with a set of Walker Evans Needle clicker piggybacks up front and using a wider, adjustable ski- stance (41.5-43.5) than the RMK, the Assault can be ordered with a Series 6, Series 7 or a Peak track. It uses a chaincase instead of QuickDrive.

Early-order Snow Check customers will be able to order a wide selection of mountain-targeted upgrades for RMK models – everything ranging from track selection, to color choices to gauges.

Customization is an important part of the Polaris mountain ordering program and it provides owners the opportunity to have a completely individualized sled.

2016 POLARIS: CRAZY IN THE MOUNTAINS

For 2016 Polaris has put its focus squarely on a segment it has dominated for several years: The mountains.

With this year’s success of the AXYS platform clearly in the books, Polaris has applied the same lightness, chassis rigidity and engine mounting setup to the Pro-RMK series by joining the AXYS front “clip” to a revised shock-in-skid tunnel.

However, taking a giant leap forward, the company has thrown in a completely redesigned mountain-targeted front suspension using one-piece forged aluminum upper and lower A-arms, taller spindles and super-light Walker Evans monotube gas shocks.

At the rear, Polaris has used computer design efficiencies to reduce the weight of the RMK’s skidframe by three pounds and has ended up with a 15-percent more rigid suspension in the process.

They didn’t stop with chassis and suspension. The 2016 Pro-RMK uses the new-last-year 800 HO powerplant with its lightened crank and 3-stage exhaust valves to amp up the available power.

V-force reeds, a high flow intake and exhaust system and an electronic oil pump are all part of the picture.

QuickDrive (belt drive, no chaincase) is also included on Pro-RMK 163 and 155-inch versions along with a completely new, lighter brake. A 600 Pro-RMK is also available in the same platform.

Two track choices are available with either Pro-RMK: A Series 6 with 2.6-inch lugs or a Series 7 with 3-inch lugs.

This is a totally revisited version of what was already one of the best mountain sleds money could buy.

There has been literally nothing left untouched, all to prove to the world Polaris knows mountain sleds better and is willing to start over with a completely clean sheet of paper to get there.

800 SWITCHBACK AXYS ADVENTURE

You can order a 137-inch SW Adventure this year with the 800 HO and still get all the good long distance riding goodies you could take advantage of last year on the 600 Adventure.

Polaris has made suspension changes on its AXYS Adventure models for 2016 including a Fox coilover front skid air shock and new 3-position compression adjustable gas shocks up front.

The 800 comes with a painted tunnel and uses a 1.35-inch Cobra track out back.

600 INDY SP TERRAIN DOMINATOR

This is a sizzle upgrade to a popular sled and includes things like retro graphics, painted slide rails and tunnel and special white handgaurds.

The real beef is in the 1.25 RipSaw track, standard issue electric start and an upgraded digital dash panel.

800 SWITCHBACK ASSAULT TERRAIN DOMINATOR

The 2016 hasn’t been married to the AXYS platform (yet) but is available with a special Terrain Dominator limited edition package with special paint and graphics and some cool backcountry equipment.

It comes with a 144×2-inch track a Chris Burandt Lock&Ride bag, powder-coated tunnel, painted slide rails and a special front bumper.

ARCTIC CAT 2016: New Sleds, New Segments

It’s tough to argue Arctic Cat hasn’t been on the cutting edge of the snowmobile industry the last two seasons.

The manufacturing agreement struck with Yamaha for MY 2014 has changed the profile of the company in many ways, but today Cat sources engines from four different suppliers: Yamaha, Suzuki, its own engine plant in St. Cloud, Minnesota and now Kymco.

For 2016, a new line of Cats will be built for the utility segment using the same Kymco 700cc 4-stroke twin used in the company’s Wildcat Trail off-road vehicle.

This engine produces 65-horsepower, uses single throttle body EFI and delivers excellent torque.

Its primary application is in the new Bearcat 3000 LT, a completely new model based on what Arctic Cat calls its ProUte platform – a variation on a ProCross or XF.

Equipped with the new engine and using a 137-inch Slide-Action suspension, it gains rear storage from a special tunnel bag and a metal rack at the rear.

With its high windshield and stubby, mountain seat, the Bearcat 3000 opens up a whole list of opportunities for Cat to serve the utility and outdoor sportsman segment with a fuel-sipping, super-quiet 4-stroke.

Another unique application of the Kymco 700 twin is in the new Pantera 3000. This is a much lighter and more rationalized version of last year’s all-new and successful Pantera designed to serve the rental market where 4-strokes are mandatory and also meet the needs of economy-minded riders who like touring trails 2-up.

The Pantera 3000 uses Cat’s Slide-Action 137 fully coupled skid and has a bevy of nice touring amenities built-in. For instance, there’s a near-perfect-height windshield with side flares and mirrors, plenty of hard-shell rear storage, a quickly removable passenger seat and passenger handwarmers.

The advent of this new 4-stroke and its adaptation to two new models enables Cat to meet Ski-Doo’s current dominance in the low-horsepower 4-stroke marketplace with the ACE 600 very nicely.
