Mega Mileage!

0

What makes more sense in a 2000 mile race than a Tour Buddy? Nothing we can think of.

Tour Buddy will be supporting Dusty VanMeter and Mark Carr in their assault on the 2005 Alaskan Tesoro Iron Dog Race.

The team will be riding Tour Buddy equipped Arctic Cats in the grueling cross country event which often requires riders to cover 100 to 140 miles of untramped powder between fuel stops.

VanMeter and Carr have placed first, three of the past four years in the event and credit the extra range provided by Tour Buddy’s auxiliary fuel system for their success.

While talking Tour Buddies, they have a sano, good looking kit available right now for the new Ski-Doo Mach-Z 1000.

Malinoski Sweeps Canterbury

Though temperatures were in the single digits on either side of the zero Fahrenheit mark all weekend, Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota played host to an exciting weekend of racing at the WSA Polaris Canterbury Snocross.

Clear skies and bright sunshine offset the frigid temps and some great racing kept the crowds warm.

Arctic Cat racer Robbie Malinoski swept the Pro classes and in so doing put his name in the record books as the first rider other than Blair Morgan or Tucker Hibbert to pull of that feat.

couple of Semi-Pro racers and Pro Women class racer got their first WSA Snocross Worldwide Championship wins and a racing legend nabbed victory in Pro Vet…

New 4-Stroke Chassis?

We think it’s possible Arctic Cat is working on a new chassis destined for 4-stroke-only power.

Here’s what makes sense. The current FC/M-Series platform is not well suited for 4-stroke engines, at least not multi-cylinder ones.

The current AWS V based 660 Turbo 4-stroke is a leading edge thrust into the world of 4-stroke snowmobile power but this chassis is in no way purpose-built for the three cylinder, automotive based turbo powerplant we’ve come to know and love.

We’ve heard chatter surrounding 4-stroke power from TRF and we believe the company will approach the market with two separate platforms over the next few seasons: one solely for 4-strokes and built for a new series of Suzuki four cylinder, high output mills.

The other platform, likely the new M-Series bulkhead with rider forward ergos and a 15 inch track, will move ahead with clean 2-stroke power, initially throttle body EFI with knock sensors and then a move to SDI and possibly full DI.

New Rotax 800?

Look for a new 800 series engine from Ski-Doo in the near future. We think it’s safe to assume any new engines from Ski-Doo will be equipped with the SDI certified emission system.

For this year the Rotax Series III 800 twin will certify 2006 EPA with carburetors and a knock sensor. However, we suspect if Ski-Doo is going to stay in the 800 class, it will need a new 800cc block with liquid cooled cases.

2- stroke engines with either SDI or Direct Injection require liquid cooling of the crankcases in the absence of fuel being scavenged under the piston as in a carburetor or Throttle Body Injection (TBI) system. 2-stroke engines have traditionally relied on fuel to cool the crank, cases and rods.

Ski-Doo Freestyle

0

The Freestyle is a super lightweight, compact snowmobile based on the REV platform and is primarily targeted towards new snowmobilers and the youth market.

The basis of the Freestyle is the new RF platform, a lightweight and simplified chassis with REV platform DNA: driver-centered riding position, pyramidal frame and A-arm front suspension. Its centralized mass and compact design make it extremely easy to maneuver.

Ergonomics are designed for stand-up or sit-down riding, with high-rise handlebars and a low profile seat that makes it easy to move around the sled.Under the hood is the RotaxT 300 single cylinder 2-stroke engine, with enough power to cruise through the snow and over hills, yet friendly enough to control easily.Up front is a single A-arm front suspension, with lightweight plastic skis.

It has a narrow 32-inch ski stance for added agility in snow. In back is the 15 inch wide, 121-inch SC-4T rear suspension delivering excellent control, bump absorption and flotation, with Motion Control shocks. RER electronic reverse is standard, and buyers ordering in the spring can opt for electric start installed at the factory.

Yamaha Predictions

This month we’re off to the OEMs to see the 2006s and collect as much info as possible for our March Sneak Peek Issue.

We’re intrigued by the excitement coming from Yamaha. We suspect they’ve got more cool stuff, and you can be sure it’s 4- stroke powered.

Of course, we’re rarely without an opinion on matters of this magnitude so here’s what we think might be in the works.

A journeyman 4-stroke engine, possibly a twin, could appear in a Vector/RX-1 variant chassis to address the need for a lower priced 4-stroke alternative to the Venom 600.

We also think it possible we’ll see a more ditch oriented version of the Vector – possibly an “R” package using the RX-1’s cool, single shock skid and some tricked out dampers up front.

As well, we believe the RX-1 will receive updated geometry from the current Vector A-frame IFS for 2006.

The 660 Turbo gets Boost!

Arctic Cat has repackaged the innovative 660 Turbo in the color we all knew they would eventually give the faithful.

Yep, you can now purchase a T660 in black, red or ZR green. The Green version features all the cool stuff on our red and white, blown and injected press unit.

This includes a ZR style seat and handlebars with risers, hookers and an LCD tach, speedo and electronic fuel gauge. We think green looks very traditional, the red very Italian and the black very Euro.

One thing’s for sure, this sled has generated enormous acceptance and popularity among Arctic Cat loyalists and 4-stroke groupies. Oh, did we mention the 660 T is intercooled? That’s cool.
