Yamaha Factory Snocross Team

Press Release –

Boss Racing is Yamaha’s official factory-sponsored snocross team on the World PowerSports Association’s 2006-2007 PowerSports Snowmobile Tour.

Within the Yamaha Blue rig’s walls is one of the finest crews of technicians, engineers and coaches, all working to make sure the team’s pair of gifted racers, Robbie Malinoski and Yuji Nakazawa, has the tools to face the 4-stroke challenge.

Boss Racing’s owner Garry Querel and Wayne Ostopowich, have fifty years of snowmobile racing between them and 17 world racing titles already in the trophy case. “Yamaha presented us with a unique challenge to prove Yamaha 4-stroke technology can be competitive in snocross racing”, explains Querel.

“This is not the 4-stroke of old. We have quicker power off the line and the technology we have seen from Yamaha has given us every confidence that Boss Racing will maintain its reputation as a world class team, able to confront the formidable challenges of snocross and win on race day.”

Boss Racing’s lead wrench spinner is no stranger to winning efforts on the track. Garth Gordon spent three years working as crew chief for Blair Morgan Racing and has three World Championships in three different disciplines of snowmobile racing. He is widely regarded as the premier snocross technician.

Yamaha personnel will be working closely with Boss Racing to field this competitive team. Mike Carver is the Yamaha Snocross R&D Coordinator and will be responsible for the product developed for the race track. He has supported seven major race teams over the years, and brings all of that experience and knowledge to Yamaha and the Boss Racing program.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with Robbie, Yuji and the whole team,” said Carver. “I look forward to developing our 4-stroke race sleds to the premier level our two champions deserve.”

Coordinating the snocross team is veteran racer and a Pro Open champion himself, Jesse Strege. Strege has been closely involved in the new 4-stroke race sled’s evolution. “I have been very active with the development of our new 4-stroke race sled in the last few years,” he explains.

“This includes spending a lot of time developing the aggressive ergonomic package with Yamaha’s engineering team. We will pool every resource available to win this year. I am very excited to be a part of it.”

“Yamaha has been very good to work with,” says Querel. “I am confident we’re going to win some races this winter and really change people’s minds about Yamaha’s 4-stroke sleds. Like I said, we have seen some amazing technology from them so far and I am confident that we will meet any challenges head-on and bring home wins on race day!”

T660 Back at Haydays

The T660 reported in SUPERTRAX last season was back at Haydays this year to try for a record, but a wet track kept this sled and others out of the record books this year.

There wasn’t a record, but these exotic 4-strokes are a treat for motorhead eyes with serious engine mods, turbo applications and more.

This year, the Big Daddy from Livingston Arctic Cat in Hillsboro, New Hampshire, had a CO2 cooler added on to control intercooler temperature, among other things.

On a muddy clay track, this sled went 106 in 500 feet even after the driver lifted 60 feet out to avoid drifting out of lane.

ADRENALINE BOOT BY KLIM

0

KLIM claims its new Adrenaline Boot draws moisture away from the foot as a result of its a GORE-TEX membrane thus keeping socks as dry and comfortable throughout the entire ride.

600 grams of Thinsulate offers excellent warmth and insulation without adding bulk to the boot.

Superior ankle support and flexibility is clearly the result of first hand knowledge about how snowmobilers ride.

ALGOMA KINIWABI: TOP Trail F Here We Come!

0

Northern Ontario’s Algoma Region boasts over 1800 miles (3000 km) of well groomed trails. On this visit we rode in the southern and eastern portions and no visit would be complete without a trip on the fabled SnowTrain.

We decided to ride the train back to Sault Ste Marie from the city of Wawa at the tail end of our ride. Starting in the “Soo” our destination was St.Joseph Island, the first stop for many US visitors who ride their sleds across the ice from Drummond Island.

If you do this, always check local ice conditions and the weather forecast for snow squalls. Pay careful attention when riding out onto the North Channel and always follow the marked stake lines. The trails on St.Joseph Island are groomed impeccably but be sharp as there are more deer on the island than people!

Riding the North Shore club’s trails is a hoot and the hydro line (Trail 3) into Elliot Lake is a 10-plus. Elliot Lake is a snowmobiler’s paradise and you may want to stay for a couple of extra days to ride the trails of the North Shore.

After Elliot Lake we headed further north and for the next two days rode Top Trail “F with an overnight stay in the town of Chapleau. We departed Chapleau with Wawa in our sites via Missanabie and Dubreauville.

Leaving Dubreauville you have two route options to get to Wawa: You can take TOP Trail D or the man made Magpie Reservoir. We opted for the Reservoir and never have I ridden in powder snow this deep for so many miles! Believe me, none of our crew was stopping to do a drive belt check and that was a good thing!

On our last day we had a short ride to Hawk Junction and loaded our sleds on the Snow Train in a blinding snow storm. We were glad to be aboard and enjoyed the snowy, relaxing ride back to Sault Saint Marie. The views are absolutely breathtaking and be sure to have your best tall tales ready.

Another big draw to this region is the Superior Snow Challenge Loop. This self guided tour now has two parts, one extending into the North of Superior travel region.

Arctic Cat Roars to Podiums at Duluth

Press Release –

The World PowerSports Association (WPSA) opened the 2006-07 snocross campaign in traditional fashion with the Duluth National, held Nov. 24-26 at Spirit Mountain.

When the snow dust settled, Team Arctic racers had collected double digit podiums in the top classes and a pair of Arctic Cat drivers earned hard-fought invitations to Winter X Games ’07. It looks to be a banner season for Team Green.

In one of the most eagerly-anticipated snowmobile racing events in recent memory, Tucker Hibbert returned to a WPSA National for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

As always, Hibbert was fast; he scored the No. 2 seed through qualifying in both Pro Open and Pro Stock and took a strong 5th in the Open main.

In the Stock final, Tucker – who has the second-most National victories in WPSA history – got a great start but was caught up in another driver’s accident.

While the crash kept Hibbert from the podium, nothing could stop Garth Kaufman. The 22-year-old got nailed in a corner by Blair Morgan but still found a way to pass Morgan.

In the process, Kaufman earned his first career Pro-class top-three and he wasn’t done, either: Kaufman got another third in Pro Open. “It’s certainly a great way to start the year, especially for the team” said the Star Performance/Arctic Cat rider. “The crew has all worked so hard. I don’t know if we were expected to be a threat, but this should show people we’re for real.”

“Garth has a lot of skill; I wasn’t surprised at all that he performed like that,” said Arctic Cat Race Manager Russ Ebert. “He and Star Performance are going to be very good.”

Speaking of very good, Dan Ebert and Ryan Simons both earned Winter X Games ’07 invites by finishing second and third, respectively, in their Winter X races. Simons – who placed 6th and 7th in the Pro finals at Duluth – will certainly be a medal threat in Aspen: He was 5th in the snocross showcase in both ’05 and ’06.

Competing against Pro drivers for the first time, Ebert impressed everyone with his great showing. It was part of an excellent weekend for him; Ebert sandwiched a pair of Semi-Pro podiums around his Winter X-worthy ride. “Danny is so dedicated and still improving as a racer,” said Cat’s Mike Kloety. “His work ethic and how he studies the track and communicates with his team sets him apart from most his age.”

In the 35 Pro Plus division, Cat’s Kirk Hibbert and Tuffy McDonald both landed on the box, as did Angela Vacchino in the Women’s class and Bill Smith in Sport Stock. Johan Lidman drove to victory in Junior 16-17, with Kyle Pallin second.

“We got our share of podiums and we’re pleased with that,” said Ebert. “Our equipment is very competitive and the machine’s durability seems to be excellent, which is a tribute to engineering. I think additional seat time for our riders will make a tremendous difference.”

In one injury update, Carl Schubitzke was landed on while leading a Winter X Invitational heat race.

He eventually left the track under his own power, and Ebert reports that Schubitzke should be fine and is expected to compete again this coming weekend.

Polaris Dominates WPSA Opener!

Press Release –

Second-year Pro Ross Martin defied any trace of a sophomore jinx by utilizing the superior ride and handling of his Polaris 440 IQ race sleds to earn victories in the Pro Open and Pro Stock classes in the WPSA PowerSports Snowmobile Tour AMSOIL Duluth (MN) National on November 25-26.

Martin, who races for Judnick Motorsports and finished second in Pro Open and Pro Stock points last season, took first in Pro Stock ahead of fellow Polaris racer Mike Schultz (Avalanche Racing), and totally dominated the Pro Open class – finishing first in every round – to earn first place ahead of Polaris racer Levi LaVallee (Hentges Racing).

“It was a great start for me, for Polaris and for our Judnick team,” Martin said. “We’ve got the sled and the determination. Now we want to win consistently.”

The Polaris factory racers’ Polaris 440 IQ race sleds use the innovative, smooth-riding, easy-handling IQ suspension that trail riders can enjoy on their Polaris snowmobiles.

Along with the Pro-class Polaris sweep, Brett Bender of the Hentges Racing team won both Semi-Pro classes and Polaris racers won the weekend’s Pro Women and Sport Open classes. In Pro Open, Pro Stock , Semi-Pro Stock and Sport Open, Polaris racers finished 1-2.

“It was a great way to start the season. You always want to get out of the gate strong, and our racers and teams really showed they were ready to race,” said Polaris Racing Manager Tom Rager, Sr. “To place so many racers in the Pro finals demonstrates our racers are in great shape and even more importantly, thje Polaris 440 IQ is the sled to beat this season.”

MARTIN SWEEPS THE PRO CLASSES

Martin finished first in all three rounds of Pro Open qualifying on the Spirit Mountain track in unseasonably warm weather. Martin adjusted to the changing track conditions on his Polaris 440 IQ and led the way for the five Polaris racers in the 15-man final. Along with runner-up LaVallee, the other Polaris finalists and their finishes in Pro Open were: TJ Gulla (Hentges Racing) fourth, Mike Schultz in sixth and Shaun Crapo (Scheuring Speedsports) in 11th.

Martin wasn’t as dominant in Pro Stock, but he placed well in preliminaries and won the final, which featured seven Polaris racers in the 15-sled field. Schultz finished second followed by these Polaris racers: Matt Judnick (Judnick Motorsports) in seventh, Crapo in 10th, Dennis “DJ” Eckstom (Scheuring Speedsports) in 11th, LaVallee in 14th and Gulla in 15th.

BENDER SWEEPS IN SEMI-PRO CLASSES

Brett Bender was perfect in Semi-Pro Open, winning every time he took to the track, and he also won the Semi-Pro Stock class, where he led a 1-2 Polaris finish as Andrew Johnstad (Avalanche Racing) came in second.

In Semi-Pro Open, five Polaris racers finished in the top 14. Following Bender were: Johnstad in fourth, Tyler Sedlmeier (Cycle Worx) in seventh, Dylan Martin (Judnick Motorsports) in 10th, and Brett Abrahamson (Abe Racing) in 14th.

In Semi-Pro Stock, Bender and Johnstad ran 1-2, Chris Kafka (Hentges racing) came in fifth and Brett Abrahamson was 12th.

ABRAHAMSON WINS IN PRO WOMEN

Kylie Abrahamson (Abe Racing) won the season opener in the Pro Women’s class and led the way for five Polaris racers in the final. Abrahamson was followed by these Polaris racers: Delene Dippel (Dippel Precision Racing) in eighth, Jennifer Pare in 10th, Ashley Parliament (Par Motorsports) in 11th and Diedra Dippel (Dippel Precision Racing) in 15th.

In Women’s Stock, Polaris racer Kendra Daniel took second, Melanie Acker was third, Katie Acker took fifth and Kristen Leirmoe (PMK Performance) ran sixth.

BRISTOW WINS IN SPORT OPEN

Matt Bristow (Bristow’s) took first place in Sport Open and also finished fifth in Sport Stock. In Sport Open, Bristow finished ahead of runner-up and fellow Polaris racer Derek Ellis (Rocky Mountain Motorsports). In Sport Stock, Polaris racer Seth Houkom finished third.

Yamaha Debuts 4-Strokes in Snocross Season Opener

Press Release –

Yamaha/Boss Racing snowmobile drivers Robbie Malinoski and Yuji Nakazawa debuted their four-stroke Nytros to the at the first snocross event of the 2006-07 season in Duluth, Minn. on Nov. 25-26.

Aboard Yamaha Factory R&D Nytros, both riders had their sights set on being the first to put a four-stroke machine in a WPSA Pro final. An additional goal for Nakazawa was to qualify for Winter X Games 11 to be held in Aspen, CO. in January.

With winter yet to arrive in Minnesota, the MX-style snocross track featured manmade snow but plenty of excitement.

Malinoski suffered an unfortunate crash during a crowded practice session on Saturday and his crew rallied to get the damaged Nytro back into racing shape. He then gallantly fought through four qualifying races in an effort to make the final.

Though he narrowly missed the cut Malinoski will have another chance at the next WPSA event on Dec. 16-17 in Gaylord, Mich.

On Sunday, Nakazawa, the defending All-Japan Super Class champion, earned a second and two thirds on his way to the X Games qualifier.

With only the top five finishers earning spots in the January 25th-28th X Games, there was plenty of pressure on the 15 riders in the final, and despite riding a great race Nakazawa managed only a seventh-place finish.

Fortunately, he too will have another opportunity as the series heads to Michigan.
