Yamaha Helps Dealers and Consumers

Press Release –

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA has announced an aggressive customer cash rebate program to help consumers buy the snowmobile they want now.

“This is absolutely one of the best customer cash programs we’ve ever seen on snowmobiles— and the motorcycle, ATV and side by side offers are also as strong as we’re likely to see for a long time,” said Yamaha’s Motorsports General Manager, Bob Starr. “This is just simply one of the best times ever for a customer to buy a new Yamaha motorsports product.”

Yamaha’s historic Let’s Ride customer cash rebate program offers up to $1,500 back on the hot 2009 models.

Customers who opt for a 2008 or earlier snowmobile will be treated to as much as an astounding $2,000 rebate on their purchase.

Combine the huge rebates with the Yamaha Advantage of #1 Resale Value, according to Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com, and there’s been no better time to enjoy the tremendous value of a Yamaha 4-stroke snowmobile!

Motorcycle, ATV and side by side programs are hot, too! Up to $1,000 cash back on 2008 and earlier off-road motorcycle and sport ATV models.

The 4×4 ATV and side by side models have $1 per cc rebates available on select 2008 and earlier models.

All programs will end on March 26, 2009.

Hibbert Completes the Perfect Storm

Press Release –

Tucker Hibbert completed his last race of the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series the same way he started it – with a convincing win, completing his perfect condensed season going 8 for 8 in Pro finals aboard his Monster Energy Arctic Cat.

With warm February sunshine, a technically challenging track and a packed house on-hand, Tucker Hibbert led the final field of 16 nearly flag to flag in the Pro Open main event.

The showcase race of the weekend was one of many firsts on the 2008-09 AMSOIL Championship tour.

Aside from Tucker completing his perfect season quest, the race also marked the first pro podium for Brett Bender; as well as the first final of the season which saw both factory Yamaha sleds in the main.

It was first year pro Brett Bender (Polaris) who snagged the holeshot at the start of the 25 lap final, close in tow was Gulla (Polaris), Turcotte (Cat), LaVallee (Pol) and Crapo (Polaris) as they made their way down the back-straight mogul field.

TJ Gulla, who previously in the weekend took a second in Pro-Stock quickly had his hopes dashed for another podium finish as his throttle cable broke on the first lap.

Meanwhile Hibbert emerged from the start in seventh, but quickly dismissed several riders and moved into second behind Bender at the close of the first lap.

“The warm temps made the track sticky and the snow heavy,” said Hibbert after the race. “The roost was going to be an issue so I wanted to get out front as fast as I could”

And to the front he went, overtaking Bender in turn one on the second lap. Following the trio of Hibbert, Bender and LaVallee in the early laps was another first year pro, Andrew Johnstad (Polaris) who got around Turcotte and settled into the fourth position.

Behind the leaders a battle raged as positions shuffled seeing Piche (Cat), Kaufman (Cat), Malinoski (Doo) and Taylor (Yamaha) work their way through the pack.

However the trio of Hibbert, Bender and LaVallee proved on this day they had too much of a good thing and retained their positions the entire 25 laps. It appeared briefly Levi might take over the second spot, but Bender showed poise and found fast lines and opened a gap on his National Guard Polaris teammate Levi. Behind them at the line it was Piche, Kaufman, Malinoski and Johnstad, while Taylor suffered a mechanical and was forced to pull off on lap 22.

It was an exciting post-race celebration for young Brett Bender, who was noticeably emotional after being awarded his second place trophy. “To be standing here (on the podium) with these guys is awesome,” said Bender. “I’ve been watching some of them since I was a kid and this is a goal I’ve been working towards for a long time.”

For Hibbert, Brainerd marked his last race of the season, as he shifts his focus on preparing for the national AMA motocross season. “Next weekend (Valentines weekend) I’m going to get my wife flowers,” said Hibbert jokingly. “Then I’ll start to focus on motocross. It’s been a lot of fun and I’ll be back next season, but this is less about championships and more about enjoying life and doing what makes me happy.”

When asked if there would be chance we would see him back on the tour for the last race of the season in Lake Geneva Hibbert responded with a nod and a smile to his father Kirk, “If we’re going to Geneva this sled will have a 41 on it and my dad will be racing and I’ll be running the pit board.”

Carlson Sports has been tweaking Arctic Cat’s latest fleet of big inch 2009 sleds and is at it again!

After some covert dyno-testing of their latest set-ups they’re comfortable releasing these impressive HP numbers.

Carlson’s Crossfire 1000R tune up produces 188hp and after some tweaking on the new Z1 Turbo, they’ve levelled an incredible 240 hp. Cough!

Poor Fuel Economy on 2009 Polaris Switchback 800

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

What gives? I have a 2009 800 Switchback that gets terrible mileage. The front pushes so bad it is dangerous, and will not turn in loose snow.

I have shortened the limiter strap one hole & firmed up ski shocks. This did help a bit on trails but not in loose snow .

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Mike

Response:

Thanks for your email!

Sounds like something is very wrong with your SB 8.

I would ask the dealer to get the ECU re-flashed first. There’s no way you should be seeing gas mileage in the 8-11 range.

Your steering issue may be related to snow conditions and unless you’re always on loose snow I would not fiddle with the limiter – we have thousands of miles of experience with this platform and it is an exceptional handler.

Maybe go to a Stud Boy Deuce bar or Slim Jims to help with the push in loose snow. Changing the limiter will lead you astray when the trails are hard pack.

Hope this helps.

1989 Yamaha SRV 540 Falling Flat

Question:

Dear Motorhead,

I have a 1989 Yamaha SRV 540 that has been sitting for a couple of years and I brought it out of retirement.

It ran but sluggish and I have done the following to try and correct the problem.

– took apart the carburator and cleaned it thoroughly.
– installed a new fuel filter
– cleaned the filter in the tank
– took apart the fuel pump and cleaned it thoroughly
– gave it a compression test…result 100 PSI in one cylinder and just over 90 in the other, and holding well.

My problem is that it idles well but when I give it gas it falls on its face or backfires severely.

Is this an air fuel issue or what? Any advice you can give me would be great.

Thank you,

Scott Bennett

Response:

Thanks for your email!

I would take the carb apart again and get a rebuild kit for it including all gaskets, needle and seat and any rubber O rings.

You must remove all the jets when you “clean” a carb and blow them out with compressed air – washing doesn’t cut it.

You still have a carb problem. Another alt might be to get another carb off a 540 engine from a wrecker.

Good luck.

Yamaha Venture GT: Gripes and Accolades

0

By: Kent Lester

Yamaha’s choice to use its Apex-style, rider-forward chassis in its premium 2-upper was a brilliant idea.

With a torquey, new 1049cc mill and the addition of EFI, this is a tough tourer to ignore. We’ve had a few complaints, though and we’ll cover them here.

One niggling gripe is the V-GT’s handwarmer control. This is Yamaha’s one-handed job with a cycling read-out on the instrument pod that moves between grips and bar heaters every time you release and engage the switch.

It also moves to the hottest setting and back down to the lowest position automatically. This is especially annoying when you’re trying to make adjustments on the fly.

We prefer heater switches that don’t require you to take your eyes off the trail to focus on what the gauges are telling you.

A bigger issue has been the GT’s skidframe calibration. Apparently, there were changes between the prototype sleds and the production ones. This version is way oversprung and, yes, resists bottoming with two riders aboard, but is too harsh, even at its softest spring and dampening settings, for one rider.

On the plus side, this sled’s seat is ultra-comfortable and the GT is loaded with a dazzling amenity list.

The acres-large windshield protects you on the coldest days but, at higher speeds, creates a backdraft that feels like a giant pair of hands gently pushing you forward.

Our press sled has been bulletproof reliable and is still a top choice on cold days for long, long rides.

CSRA ROYAL DISTRIBUTING CUP

Press Release –

A record number of spectators were in attendance over the weekend at Georgian Downs in Barrie, the newest venue on the Canadian Snowcross National Series.

Racing kicked off Friday night under the lights with the main attraction of the night being the Blair Morgan Rehabilitation Fundraiser race featuring Semi-Pro and Pro racers.

#73 Lee Butler took the win with #98 Mike Island grabbing a second place finish in front of his hometown fans. #88 John O’Malley held on for third place.

#73 Lee Butler made the Royal Distributing Team proud, winning all of his finals throughout the weekend including both Friday night and Saturday Blair Morgan races.

Butler proved for another weekend that he is determined and committed to bringing home the season championship for 2009.

Butler will have a strong fight for the championship on his hands with Royal Distributing team-mate, #115 Dave Joanis, who in his first year of Pro has already earned two first place finishes and a handful of podium positions only four races into the season.

Last weekend, Joanis took a 2nd place finish in the Pro Open class and 3rd in the Pro Stock. Reigning Pro Champion, #999 Michael VanDolder, is making a strong charge on both Joanis and Butler after getting off to a rough start in the first two rounds. VanDolder finished with a very respectable 3rd and 2nd place finish in the Pro Open and Pro Stock classes in Barrie.

The Semi-Pro division has seen a wide variety of riders in the podium positions so far this season making for intense racing and heated battles in each final. One of those top contenders is Shorline Racing’s #173 Corey Watkinson of Port Carling, Ontario.

Watkinson took the win in the Stock class, however, a crash in the Open class kept him off of the podium completely in that final. #333 Jeremy VanDolder of Dayco Racing, has led his fair share of races this season including last weekends’ Semi Pro Open race where he held on for the win followed up by a 2nd place finish in the stock class.

New this year to the Kodiak Boots/Sloot Construction Team, #511 Jaymie McPhail, is putting forth a valid fight for the front finishing on the podium each weekend.

Unable to get out front on the starts, McPhail has been left to work his way through the pack and it was those passing skills that allowed him to come from behind to finish third in the Semi Pro Stock final.

Barrie proved to be an exciting weekend for the Pro Womens class. Hometown racer #111s Stacy Orr, of Rosko Powersports, stood out from the pack catching huge air in each of her races.

It was on those jumps where Orr was able to make up valuable time on her rival, #55 Angela Vacchino, and eventually overtake her for the lead in the motos. When it came down to the final, it was less than a ski length that separated Orr and Vacchino and the finish line with Shorline Racing’s Vacchino taking the win.

The increasingly popular Vintage Series, returned for Round #2 in Barrie. Qualifiers were required in the Vintage 1 class with 12 racers qualifying for the final where #38 Jeff Fullerton of Bracebridge, Ontario took the win. In the Vintage 2 class #74 David Lee of Utopia, Ontario grabbed the checkered flag. Former Snowcross racer, #175 Michael Fenton, took the win in the Vintage Open division.

After a weekend off, racing will resume February 14-15 in Peterborough, Ontario for Round #2 of the Amsoil Kawartha Cup.
