FIRST RIDE: Ski-Doo MX-Z TNT ACE 600

0

One of this year’s biggest surprises is the new 600 ACE 4-stroke Ski-Doo has dropped into its super-light TNT platform.

We rode this sled about 50 miles the other day on fairly rough, ungroomed trails and came away impressed.

First, the engine: It’s extremely torquey and throttle response is very good right off idle. Like most small displacement 4-strokes it utilizes its bottom end at trail speeds and then signs off fairly quickly in the higher RPM ranges.

However, throttle tip-in at trail speeds is really good and the sled accelerates up to 70 mph with surprising agility. It’s super-quiet and smooth and there’s never a hint of front-heaviness from this combo of 4-stroke and chassis.

One thing we weren’t crazy about was the way the throttle stays on for a milli-second after you let off. It’s a bit unnerving at first but once you get used to it, you don’t even notice it.

We think the genius of this package is the combo of lightness the TNT brings plus the nice manners this engine exhibits for trail riding. We think this is the kind of sled you could buy and keep for years.

Certainly, the XP chassis in its TNT iteration is state-of-the-art right now and we’d wager that tough little 4-stroke will likely outlive rock.

Hibbert Hits Home Run at Fargo National Snocross

0

Monster Energy/Arctic Cat’s Tucker Hibbert hit a home run at Newman Outdoor Field by sweeping the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series Dakota Magic Casino Fargo National.

Despite frigid weather with fierce winds dropping the air temperature to 20 below zero, thousands of fans filled the FM RedHawks stadium Friday and Saturday to watch the first ever snocross event at the popular baseball field.

The track was tight but the abundance of snow allowed it to develop deep holes and multiple lines creating intense racing action.

Similar to the season opener in Duluth, Minn. two weeks ago, Hibbert chased down and passed no. 837 Ross Martin for the win in the both main events.

Hibbert took the holeshot in Friday’s 22-lap Pro Open final but by the second corner was shuffled back to third. On lap two, he made the pass for second only to lose that position two laps later after tipping over in high-banked corner. He quickly remounted and with a newfound determination, began his charge to the front. He utilized the entire course, finding new lines with every lap.

On lap 11, he snuck by no. 11 Tim Tremblay and finally had Martin in sight. Within a couple laps, Hibbert was on Martin’s snow flap and they began an aggressive battle for the lead. They each took a couple hard hits but eventually Hibbert came out on top.

Saturday’s Pro Super Stock final was nearly a carbon copy of the Open final. Martin took the early lead with Hibbert in third. On lap 16 of 24, Hibbert passed Martin and opened over a three second gap for the win.

Next up for Hibbert is the Piranha X Western National in Sandy, Utah Jan. 8. This will mark the second annual event at the stunning Rio Tinto Stadium, home of the Salt Lake Real professional soccer team.

Tucker Hibbert – #68 Monster Energy/Arctic Cat

“I’m pumped about how everything turned out in Fargo. We (the team) were able to win the finals and improve on our overall championship points by doing well in the qualifiers. It was a cool feeling racing so close to home and having so many friends and family at the event. I was really surprised by the strong turnout considering how bad the weather was. Overall, it was a great event and I hope to race there again. I’m excited about the improvements we (the team) made from Duluth to Fargo. I feel a lot stronger now and am excited about the rest of the season.”

TEAM ARCTIC HITS THE JACKPOT AT FARGO

Eight-of-12 Class Wins and a Sweep of Pro and Semi Pro

Team Arctic rolled into Fargo, ND, for the Dakota Magic Casino Snocross, hit the jackpot and rolled away with the lion’s share of hardware on the second stop of the ISOC National Tour.

After taking eight of 12 class wins, including every Pro and Semi Pro final, Team Arctic racers and crew proved the only magic in Fargo was the classic Arctic Cat Black Magic.

Tucker Hibbert continued his one man wrecking-ball approach to the Pro Class, with similar come-from-behind dramatics that brought Arctic Cat fans to their feet. Racing his Arctic Cat/Monster Energy Sno Pro 600s, Hibbert led a cache of Team Arctic Pros that accounted for nine-of-15 finalists in Pro Stock, and seven-of-15 in Open. He’s now four-for-four on the season.

Factory Team Arctic teammates Cody Thomsen and Kyle Pallin put on a clinic in the Semi Pro Stock classes at Fargo. In the first race, Thomsen started in the back row, chased down a fast-starting Pallin, got around him and took the highly-dramatic win. But Pallin would not be denied, and in the second Semi Pro final he again nailed the holeshot and simply checked-out, taking his first win of the season and Arctic’s third (of four) in this highly-competitive class.

Carly Davis returned to the top-step of the podium in the Pro Am Women’s class, putting her Christian Bros. Racing Arctic Cat at the sharp end of the field for the first time this season. Proving the depth of the Team Arctic race program, Jesse Hendrickson won the Sport Stock final, while Travis Kern won the Junior 14-15 class.

“Our riders had one of those amazing weekends, where we either won or finished on the podium in nearly every class,” said Mike Kloety, Team Arctic Race Manager. “Sure we love to see wins from top-class racers like Hibbert, Thomsen, Pallin and Davis, but it’s extra-satisfying when our Sport and Junior racers get some of the glory. Taking eight of 12 finals illustrates the strength of our Sno Pro 600, the talent of our racers and the dedication of their crews.”

“At the first National in Duluth, we noticed our sleds needed help with the 50-percent-throttle rule for the Junior classes. Steve Houle from Speedwerx jumped in and, with the help of Russ Ebert and the great folks up at ERX Motor Park, made significant improvements. We saw the result of that effort at Fargo, and with more testing I suspect this package will only get better.”

The next race in the ISOC National Tour is at Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah, on Jan. 8.

BOSS Racing’s Derek Ellis Podiums Again

0

BOSS Racing had another podium weekend despite a hard luck turn at the Dakota Magic Casino Nationals; the 2nd Round of the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series.

Friday’s practice looked good for both Semi-Pros; Derek Ellis and Corey Watkinson, as well as Pro Brett Turcotte – yet, things quickly got off to a rough start for our #16. Turcotte was again rocket fast off the line in his first heat running 2nd for the first six laps of his 10 lap heat.

In the 7th lap Brett hit a snow covered ice ridge which launched his machinery sideways. Turcotte wrestled to get control of his 450 lb. air-bound sled, then bailed in the final seconds to avoid a catastrophe.

It ended nonetheless in an abrupt jolt to the frozen ground causing a laceration and dislocation of Turcotte’s throttle thumb; this ended Turcotte’s ambitions for the weekend. Doc says 4 weeks to recoup and he’ll get the green light to ride Round 3 @ Rio Tinto Jan 7th. Perfect timing as we have a 4 week break for the holidays!

Team owner, Garry Querel assembled a powerful one-two punch this season, which comes in useful in times like these. Derek Ellis showed stellar performance in his heat races and once again he the fastest qualifier for both Semi-Pro Rounds of a national event.

During Friday’s main event Ellis pulled the holeshot and then attempted to untangle himself from the traffic mayhem delivered by the first corner. He came out of the mess in 5th and finished there after a hard race.

Saturday’s Semi Pro Final saw both Ellis and Watkinson on the line. Ellis had a fast start, was the second rider to come through turn one, which he maintained for the full 16 lap race to finish 2nd, for his third podium already this season. Ellis maintains his 2nd place position in the national points standings.

The SKI-DOO/ BOSS Racing team is looking forward to the upcoming holiday to enjoy much needed downtime with family and friends…. and to hit the practice track in preparation for January’s Utah appearance and Winter X Games in Aspen.

CSRA CHAMPIONSHIPS – CALABOGIE, ONTARIO

0

A new addition to the schedule this year, Calabogie Peaks Ski Resort played host to Round #1 of the CSRA National Series. Racers had the chance on Friday to use the hill to test out their new machines and do any last minute fine-tuning before hitting the track in full force Saturday.

In the Semi-Pro Stock class, it was a familiar group of names out front starting with #421 Dylan Hall followed by #217 Sean Macaualy who made the jump to Arctic Cat this year riding for All-Terrain Racing/First Nations Motorsports.

With one lap left to go, Quebec racer #144 Maxime Taillefer made the pass on Macaulay and took over second position leaving Macaulay with a respectable third place finish. Giving the Royal Distributing/Rockstar/Factory Recreation team a clean sweep in the Semi-Pro division, #421 Dylan Hall once again took the win on his Ski-Doo in the Open class on Sunday afternoon.

With Hall out in front from the start, the rest of the pack fell into place behind him starting with #381 J.B. Dennis aboard his Byers Motorsports Polaris. #333 Jeremy VanDolder of Labours Union/Dayco battled early on in the race with Peterborough Roofing’s #107 Tom Adams for third position, with VanDolder pulling into the final podium position.

From Timmins, Ontario; #55 Angela Vacchino, last year’s National Pro Women Champion held up to her reputation as Canada’s fastest women racer by putting her RJ’s Motosport Arctic Cat out front for the overall win. Team Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo racer, #111s Stacey Orr, finished second overall followed by #989 Wakenda Peters.

#937 Dylan Martin came up from the States for the weekend to race for Royal Distributing/Rockstar/Factory Recreation. Martin made quite the first impression with Canada as he grabbed the holeshot in Saturday’s Pro Open final holding off the rest of the hard-charging pack to take the win. Behind first a heated battle continued between Martin’s team-mate, #115 David Joanis and #93 Iain Hayden (Rockstar/Polaris). Joanis got himself ahead of Hayden on the 10th lap only to exchange positions again with four laps left to go. At the checkered it was #937 Dylan Martin, followed by #93 Iain Hayden in second place and #115 David Joanis rounding out the top three.

As the weekend was coming to an end, fans were still on the edge of seat waiting for one race – Sunday’s Pro Open Final! When the green flag dropped it was team-mates Butler and Hayden that rounded the top of the hill first, unfortunately Butler got sideways and went down hard causing the race to be red-flagged. Butler walked off the track under his own power, but obviously would not be participating in the re-start.

With a second chance at the start, #93 Iain Hayden once again took the lead on his Rockstar Polaris with #115 David Joanis and #98 Mike Island close behind. On the second lap, Joanis made the pass on Hayden for the lead which turned out to be short lived with Hayden resuming his position out front almost immediately. #98 Mike Island also got into the mix and put himself ahead of Joanis in second position.

Rockstar racers exchanged positions in the sixth lap as #937 Dylan Martin took over third ahead of Joanis. A great race continued much to the delight of the large crowd of spectators, who cheered loudly as #93 Iain Hayden took the checkered flag for his first CSRA win of the year! #98 Mike Island of Team Rosko Powersports/Ski-Doo took second place with #937 Dylan Martin in third.

Racers will take a break over the holidays and resume racing on January 15-16, 2010 in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec for the Coors Light International Grand Prix.

Rumblings About 2012 Sleds: POLARIS

0

It’s crazy, but at this time of year, when everyone is just starting to get out on the snow for the new season, we start postulating about the next year’s sleds. Weird.

2011 was a big year for Polaris with 15 new model variations hitting the snow and we fully expect some more new stuff from Roseau, this year.

Reason? The company is gradually switching over to its new Pro-Ride platform which is lighter, more rigid and more economical to build than the IQ chassis.

This doesn’t necessarily mean all the new sleds will be RUSH models. The 2011 Pro-Ride RMK and Switchback Assault Polarii proved this new platform works amazingly well with a conventional shock-in-skid rear end, too.

All that being said, we think Polaris will add at least two new RUSH models, we’re thinking with a longer track (136-inches), to satisfy the trail-focused end of the crossover market. These sleds will likely be powered by both the SDI Cleanfire 600 and the new-this-year 2-injector 800.

This is a bit of a stretch but we also think there’s something happening in the 4-stroke end of things at Polaris. The IQ Turbo, although a very appealing 4-stroke, has pretty much reached the end of its life cycle and, although Polaris hasn’t been making much ado about 4-stroke snowmobiles lately, we think it has something fresh up its corporate sleeve.

We can’t help but think there was some provision made in the design of the Pro-Ride front clip to accommodate some sort of 4-stroke engine. This could be a cool sled: A 4-stroke Turbo RUSH making 140 horsepower. Hmm.

Byers Motorsports Off To A Good Start

0

Jamie and Kyle Byers came out of the first race weekend with good results aboard their Supertrax Magazine/ Byers Motrsports/ Polaris IQ race sleds.

Even though Mother Nature was not on our side prior to the CSRA season opener in Calabogie, The CSRA and Calabogie Ski resort crew were able to pull together enough snow to build us a track. The start line was straight up the hill and riders were getting excess of 70+ MPH at the top of the hill into the first corner.

Kyle’s first time on the sled this season was Saturday morning for a few laps before his first race, as he was unable to practice on Friday due to prior commitments. In Saturdays Sport 600 class, he finished 6th and 7th in the qualifying rounds which unfortunately did not put him in the final.

After a few adjustments and more seat time on the sled, Kyle felt more comfortable Sunday and came out flying. His Polaris IQ racer and Dayco Belt hooked up and he grabbed the Hole-shot in every race.

In the qualifiers, Kyle finished 3rd and 4th giving him the 7th start pick for the final. Once again, He grabbed the throttle and pulled off another Hole-shot and led for the first 2 laps of the final. Kyle crossed the finish line in a close 3rd putting him on the Podium for Sunday’s Sport 600.

In the Semi-Pro stock class, Jamie battled for 1st place in Moto 1 until making a mistake with one lap to go and was passed finishing 3rd. In Moto 2, the Top 3 riders were racing close the whole race pulling away from the rest of the racers and Jamie came across the checkered in 3rd. Qualifying 7th for the final, Jamie didn’t get the start he would have liked putting him toward the back. He struggled with line choices on the rough track and finished 7th.

Sunday was a new day for Jamie in the Open class, where he has always done well in previous years. He grabbed the hole-shot in Moto 1 and led the whole race only getting passed once, which was short-lived, and came across the line first for the win. Jamie got another good start in Moto 2 coming out of corner 1 in second.

He kept the pressure on the leader and followed him for the first few laps waiting for the right opportunity to make the pass. The time came when the leader changed his line coming down the hill, Jamie took the inside line, flying straight down the hill making the pass for the lead at the bottom. Jamie led the rest of the race, winning both qualifiers and giving him the #1 start pick for the final.

Jamie was pumped to have the top start pick for the Open final and was looking to sweep the day. Once again, Jamie’s 600 Mod hooked up got a good start going into the first corner in 3rd before getting tagged by another rider and getting tossed off the sled. Jamie got back onto his sled quick, fired it up, and battled his way through the field picking good lines come across the finish line in 8th.

“It was almost a perfect day; I was feeling good and the sled was working great. I think I would have finished upfront in the final if we didn’t have the trouble in the first corner” Jamie said after the final. “We will just have to come out even harder at the next race”.

The next stop on the CSRA schedule is in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, January 15-16, 2011.
