2020 BEST IN CLASS: BEST VALUE

0

Another Year, Another Battle! These Guys Think They’re Right. What Do You Think?

WINNER: RENEGADE SPORT 600 CARB 137

I can’t really say this choice is perfect because the technology here is over 10-years old. However, when you’re talking about value, price is always the numero uno thing.

The fact is, no matter how cheap a sled is priced, if it doesn’t give you what you need or want, it isn’t really good value. I chose this one because the Renegade Sport still gives you a ton of goodness for a reasonable 2020 price.

First, the technology: The Renny Sport is built on the REV XP platform first seen in 2008 – and in snowmobile years, that’s an eternity.

Here’s the good part: That original XP chassis was and still is one of the lightest ones ever built. Right away, you’ve got power-to-weight working for you.

The Sport uses tried-and-true Ski-Doo TRA clutches spun by an iconic twin carbed 600cc Series 2 Rotax exhaust valve twin. This engine is anvil tough, makes an honest 110-horsepower and is still very tunable.

I chose the Renegade over the 120-inch MX-Z for its 137-long, 1.25-inch deep track and standard electric start. The extra dollars are definitely a good investment here. Mark thinks money grows on trees so he probably won’t even read this story about lower cost, less equipped sleds.

This version of the Ski-Doo Sport is so light it outperforms many more powerful ones in powder and climbing situations. Its rear suspension is called SC-5M and by the time it was superseded by rMotion, had evolved into a completely competent, smooth riding skidframe – especially in this 137-inch iteration.

For sure, we’d like to see Ski-Doo do more with this sled in the near future. We think an update to a RAS 2 front end would make it even more appealing without driving up the cost and maybe even a bit of a hybrid body refresh with the XS-Series platform Ski-Doo deleted a couple of years ago would be nice.

No matter how you cut it, though, this is a killer deal for first-time sled buyers and second-sled hunters who want a snowmobile that can do it all for about two-thirds the price of a completely up-to-date 600.

Markie, the key words here are non-compromise. You don’t have to be embarrassed about pulling up to your favorite hang-out, Larry’s Burger Pit (home of the Big Coronary Filet), with this full-sized sled!

RUNNER-UP: INDY EVO

Kenny, this is embarrassing. You did it again! Why did you pass over the obvious winner in this category like you didn’t even read the EVO’s specs? Hmm, I might have answered my own question here: Kent didn’t read the EVO’s specs!

Here we have what has to be the best idea to come along in a long time. The Polaris EVO is as close to what Sea-Doo’s “Spark” watercraft is to a snowmobile as you can get.

Yes, the EVO is perfect for younger and smaller pilots but still generates a fully legitimate sno-mo-experience that goes way beyond the ZR 200 and the Sno-Scoot, which by the way, are superb rides for mid-sized kids. The EVO is priced really well, making buying one pretty painless.

The ability to step up power output to a full 60-hp level with an ECU and carb tweak means the EVO can go along on all-day trail rides. I’ve witnessed this sled in the hands of younger teenagers and their response to the sled is remarkable.

The EVO’s ergonomics go a long way toward building confidence in attuning riders to a big sled feel but a smaller sled fit. Truth is, the sno-mo-biz really needs the EVO and from what we’ve heard, buyers are responding well to it.

Frankly Kent, you completely blew this one. It’s way cheaper than the Renegade you picked and way more versatile at accommodating a wide spectrum of rider sizes and skill levels. Duh?

2020 BEST IN CLASS: BEST TRAIL SLED

0

Another Year, Another Battle! These Guys Think They’re Right. What Do You Think?

WINNER: SKI-DOO MX-ZX 600

This is a tough class to judge because there are four contenders here and all of them are super-good. The Polaris Indy XC, Cat’s 6000 Limited and Yamaha’s totally redone 2020 Viper are all worthy of consideration. Each delivers great trail power, fuel economy and above-average grunt for trail riding.

That being said, I will attempt to define what a trail rider wants and needs.

First, I have to give kudos to Ski-Doo for offering the very best skidframe ride in this class. rMotion is still the standard by which every other snowmobile suspension is judged and it feels like no matter what shock package you choose, it outperforms everything else.

The X-package 600 I’ve chosen with running board adjusters for both shock damping and spring preload is so top-drawer I can hardly contain myself!

Second, there’s a huge trend toward 137-inch tracks for trail sleds but I’ve chosen the MX-Z with a 129 as my fave for trails. The 8-inch shorter sneaker allows the MX-Z to pivot faster, without push or understeer, and there’s no compromise in ride quality.

Third, the 600 E-TEC: What an awesome engine! As difficult as it is to diss the other 125 to 130-hp engines in this category, this version of the 2-year-old revised Rotax 600 stands alone delivering incredible gas mileage and performance while killing everyone else for EPA stats.

In my informed and pretty much-always accurate opinion, on a cold, crisp day with hundreds of miles ahead of you, this is the sled you want to be sitting on.

RUNNER-UP: POLARIS INDY 600 XC 137

It’s hard to disagree with your pick for this important segment. However, I will disagree. Yes, the G4 chassis is a winner and the new Rotax 600 mill is a big step up for Ski-Doo in the 600 segment but… the G4 doesn’t handle like the Polaris Indy XC.

Polaris’ handling dynasty is nearing its 20th year using its variable castor design. Ski-Doo has tweaked its RAS IFS set-up about a jillion times in this period and it still doesn’t work as good as the Polaris.

Mix in this reality: The SDI 600 Liberty capably shreds white-top driving the admittedly lighter Polaris chassis forward with heroic authority. While Kent was sucked into the “whiz-bang-everything-new-is-better mentality” I’ll stay with the meat and potatoes performance benchmark that clearly says, “light is right”.

Speaking of potatoes, I remember that time someone pried the lid off Mom’s pressure cooker when it was still steaming hot and blew the windows out of the kitchen. So much for that person understanding technology!

2020 BEST IN CLASS: BEST CROSSOVER SLED

0

Another Year, Another Battle! These Guys Think They’re Right. What Do You Think?

WINNER: 850 INDY SWITCHBACK ASSAULT 144

No wonder I’m always right, Kent. The Indy Switchback 144 has been the benchmark in the X-over segment since the sled was first introduced with an 800 Liberty. Our insightful readers are in full agreement with my enlightenment surrounding this important segment.

What’s at the root of this amazing dual-purpose, capable trail, capable off- trail ride? It’s about balance. Everyone in this biz wants to claim it has the best 50/50 X-over every year… then they build two crossover sleds to satisfy their customers.

The drill seems to be this: Build a 75/25 trail biased X-over for wannabes and a 75/25 off-trail one for hardcores. All the while Polaris keeps building the Switchback Assault 144 that hits a homerun for this segment with one sled powered by three different engines, an 850, 800 and a 600.

We have a pretty diverse group of pilots here at Supertrax/SnowTrax Top Secret World HQ who ride thousands of klicks every winter.

I rely on their expert opinions when things get as complex as they are in the crossover segment. If Kent would simply settle down and resource these assets he too could share in my enlightenment. He doesn’t. The riders here all agree the 144 SB Assault is the only true 50/50 ride.

If a day’s trail riding lies ahead, this sled’s near-perfect handling will keep you at the front of your pack. If a day of boondocking in untramped pow is in order, the Assault can lead the way. If this sounds like there’s no downside to the Switchback Assault, you would be correct.

Now available with Polaris’ superb 850 Liberty, the equation just got stronger. Limitless off-trail power and competitive on-trail squeeze. It’s all you need in one package, Kent.

RUNNER-UP: ARCTIC CAT RIOT 8000

When it comes to being open-minded, Mark’s brain is like a steel bear trap: Completely clamped shut!

Polaris hasn’t changed the SW Assault’s design for several years (Mark’ quote: Yeah, I know; it’s because it’s so good) and the competition has been sneaking up on it.

This year, Cat brought out a completely revised version of a crossover called the RIOT. This is the first time we’ve actually liked a standard version of a model more than the premium one – in this case, the RIOT X.

Why? Because the baseline RIOT uses new IQS trail front end geometry, a revised uncoupled skidframe lengthened to 146-inches and my favorite track – a 1.6 lugged Camso.

Frankly, it doesn’t cater to a bunch of flatlanders who are trying to be mountain riding wannabees. The RIOT performs admirably in powder and exceeds expectations on trails.

Mark, do you think Arctic Cat hasn’t been watching the Assault’s success? The engineers knew exactly what was needed and built the RIOT to exceed the Assault’s prowess as a crossover. Done deal!
