Yamaha Apex RTX

0

Highs: New-for-’07 twin shock skid oozes ditch banger personality. Are you sure those are Fox Floats because they sure work way too good if they are?

Yellow paint is lighter this year. Just kidding – yellow trim looks real good. The sport’s most sophisticated, most powerful, most impressive, most symphonic 4-stroke mill.

Lows: Why bother with the dual shock skid when the single shocker works better than anything in the biz? Is that a windshield or an iced cappuccino lid?

Bottom Line: Somewhat crisper in the jigglers compared to last year’s RTX but slightly more competent on approaches.

The Apex RTX is a quality piece that delivers rocket-like thrust and amazing economy. This one breaks the needle clean off the valu-o-meter with lots of ditch banger wannabe racer sizzle.

Ski-Doo MX-Z XRS 800

Highs: More sizzle than a 24 oz sirloin, its as close as you’re gonna get to owning a full-on Sno-X racer. Super lightweight, tough as nails, perfect ergos for aggressive pilots and pit-stop-emptying cachet.

Clear tape the lights and everyone will think you’re on the way to tech. There’s never been anything, period, with this much genuine wannabe appeal.

Lows: Might be a tad stiff for most pilots. What other social problems do you have that require you to assert your identity this powerfully? You will tire of autographing women’s clothing. Yikes – is that the price?

Bottom Line: Ski-Doo has thrown just about everything they’ve got in their race program right into the showroom. This is a very serious sled and should be taken just that way – seriously.

Exceptional handling and power plus the ability to adjust the chassis to suit your style. It’ll make you a better rider if you’ve got the talent. Otherwise you’ll just look cool showing up.

WPSA Regional Affiliate Championship Correction

Press Release –

CORRECTION REGARDING REGIONAL AFFILIATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AT LAKE GENEVA WHITE BEAR LAKE

The PowerSports Snowmobile Tour’s second annual Regional Affiliate Championship events, held during the Nielsen Enterprises Grand Finale, will feature a Women’s Stock Class.

The event is scheduled for March 16-18 at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva, Wis.

“We’re pleased to announce the return of the Women’s Stock Class to the Regional Affiliate Championships,” said PowerSports Entertainment, Inc. Executive Vice President of Operations Kent Lungstrom. “The Women’s Stock Class has a long history of strong participation and competitive fields in all of our regions. We’re excited to have them compete and we apologize for not including the class in the original release. ”

The 300cc Class will not be running at part of the 2006-2007 Regional Affiliate Championship.

“We will continue to monitor the growth of this class of racers with the hopes of adding the Junior 300cc Class to next season’s events,” said Lungstrom. “We regret any confusion this may have caused.”

The Regional Affiliate Championship will invite the top-three finishers in each eligible class in each of four regional title chases—Minnesota State, Wisconsin State, Woody’s Michigan State and the Rock Maple Racing circuit—to compete in the events.

Eligible classes include: 120 Champs, Women’s Stock, Jr. 10-13 Fan, Plus 25, Sport Open, Sport Stock 500, Semi-Pro Open, Semi-Pro Stock 500, and Pro Stock. Tour entry fees will be waived for those qualified regional affiliate riders.

Trophies will be awarded for first through fifth place, while the winner of each class will be honored at the National awards banquet following racing activities on Sunday, March 18.

The cut-off dates for determining top three in each class for each regional affiliate are March 3-4, 2007, and invitees will be contacted by WPSA to arrange participation details the week of March 5.

Competitors are urged to contact their local affiliate for information on how to qualify.

New Plan for Ski-Doo Backed Race Sleds

Apparently Ski-Doo wants to mirror the successful launch sequence used in 2002 when the original beaver tail 800 REV hit the ground as a limited build while the racing camps, particularly the Warnert organization, raced then-new Mod REVs and ZX based 440 stockers in the same season.

Rumor has it Ski-Doo will be requiring its factory backed teams to ditch current 600 Mods based on the current 440 racer chassis in mid-January to race the new 600 Mod “REV II”.

While this would make sense from a marketing standpoint we’ve heard there’s some unrest in the yellow trailers. We can understand why. It takes a lot of time and effort to dial in race sleds and early season races are really test beds for that process.

To switch up part way through the year to an all-new chassis would be asking a lot of the teams racing Ski-Doo snowmobiles. Stay tuned.

WOW Snowmobile Relay Cancelled for 2007

Press Release –

Polaris has announced it has cancelled the 2007 International WOW (Way Out Women) Relay, a cross-continental snowmobile relay ride by women to raise funds for breast cancer research in the United States and Canada.

The first three WOW Relays successfully increased public awareness about breast cancer and raised more than $800 thousand dollars to support breast cancer research.

After the hiatus in 2007, event organizers are planning to again hold the event in 2008 and continue raising money to support this important cause.

Polaris Donates Winter Gear to Coats For Kids

Press Release –

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn., October 12, 2006 – Today, as temperatures dip and snow is in the forecast, Polaris is presenting $60,000 worth of coats and gloves to the The Salvation Army’s Coats for Kids program to keep kids warm this winter.

The donation will directly impact more than 600 children in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.

The over 600 coats and 100 pairs of gloves Polaris is donating are all designed to provide protection against the elements for the winter enthusiasts who need it most – fun-loving youngsters.

The coats and gloves come in a variety of colors and styles, and are sized for both young children and teenagers.

“Polaris chose to make a donation to Coats for Kids because our company is made up of snowmobile and outdoor enthusiasts, so we know how important it is to stay safe and warm during the cold Minnesota winter,” said Bennett Morgan, president and chief operating officer, Polaris Industries. “We hope these coats will help Twin Cities kids stay warm as they’re going to and from school and when they’re outside enjoying the beautiful Minnesota snow that’s just around the corner.”

“Our office was abuzz with excitement when we heard about Polaris’ generous donation,” said Major Paul Fleeman, Twin Cities Salvation Army Commander. “Due to the tremendous need in the Twin Cities area, we set an ambitious giving goal this year. With Polaris’ donation we are definitely on our way to ensuring a safe and warm winter for children in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area.”

Yamaha Wins Heat Up Snowy COSDRA Grass Drags

Press Release –

Four-stroke Yamaha snowmobiles wrapped up the US portion of the 2006 COSDRA grass drag racing season exactly as they began it – winning.

At the Hastings 500 meet in Hastings, Mich. on Oct. 14-15, Nytro and Vector sleds shut down the competition to win both Pro and Semi Pro Stock 500 classes, with the Apex also taking a podium position in Stock 600.

Making things even sweeter, at press time Lustilla Racing’s Rocky Miller appeared headed for the 2006 COSDRA Stock 500 championship on his Vector.

Grass drag racing is supposed to be a summer sport, and when six inches of snow fell in western Michigan before Saturday’s races, organizers faced some serious work getting the clay launch pad ready.

But the cold didn’t stop Ashley Agdorny from claiming the Semi Pro Stock 500 win on her Nytro over the Vector of Lustilla Racing’s Chris Weise, or Miller from taking his Lustilla Racing Vector to the Stock 500 win. Canadian Jordan Cole and Miller followed up with a close 2-3 finish in Stock 600 on their Apex sleds.

On Sunday Agdorny took advantage of sunny skies to repeat her victory over Weise in Semi Pro Stock 500, with Miller once again topping the Stock 500 pro ranks. “These Yamaha snowmobiles are just awesome,” said team owner Jeff Lustilla after the event. “They have great horsepower and they really go, plus the reliability is awesome. Yamaha definitely makes the best sleds now – the competitors are all chasing us.”
