BEST IN CLASS AWARDS: Best 120hp Trail Sled

0

Winner: Polaris IQ 600 CFI

There’s no sidestepping this class. It’s the heart of the market and the competition here is intense. The nominees included both 2-stroke and 4-stroke offerings.

The Polaris IQ 600 Clean Fire 121 was almost impossible not to select for a number of reasons, not the least of which is our familiarity with this impressive snowmobile.

We’ve been dazzled by the 600 IQ’s variable castor A-frame IFS and its imposingly powerful Liberty 600cc CleanFire Injected 2-stroke twin.

Its combination of near telepathic turn-in, linear, progressive handling and confidence inspiring on-center feel melds with an engine capable of making us look like heroes every time we squeeze the loud handle.

Stupid fast is what we’ve called this sled. More than once we’ve wondered if it’s really not a 700.

Intuitive in its ability to read minds on tight trails, this is the 600cc-120hp Class benchmark.

Runner-Up: Ski-Doo MX-Z XP 600 SDI

No one around here is oblivious to the amount of revolutionary innovation the XP platform represents.

We struggled not giving it BIC honors but, truthfully, we simply have not had enough experience with the sled to go that far yet.

In particular, we have not quantified the 600cc mill at sea level due to Ski-Doo’s use of insanely high altitude locales for the XP’s intro and subsequent 2008 model Snow Shoot testing.

All the right stuff is here and we think Polaris will need to be on its toes in 2009 to cover the MX-Z Adrenaline 600 SDI.

Boss Racing Report From Valcourt

Press Release –

Saturday-Pro Stock

Weather was near 15 degrees and sunny with a good cold wind. Early in the week, the Team had made great suspension gains during testing in Winnipeg and further advanced that progress in Valcourt, Quebec. The Boss Racing team impressed everyone securing 8 of 12 holeshots Saturday.

Robbie Malinoski (#4) qualified 1st, 1st, and 3rd in his first 3 heats. Jeff Snow (#192) went 4th, 6th, 4th in his qualifying rounds and did not make the final.

During Saturday’s final round came into the first turn heavy in the carnage, riding out of the pack 6th he easily moved through the whoop section, passing three sleds and moving into 3rd place.

He remained in 3rd until the last two laps when the whoop section got the better of him, ejecting him off his now well dialed sled, leaving him 14th.

Sunday- Pro Open

During the modified class both Robbie and Jeff were hot. Robbie finishing 3rd, 2nd and 2nd in his 3 heats with Jeff going 2nd, 3rd, 4th. Both Riders started the final on the front row, with Jeff Snow securing the holeshot. He went wide; coming out of the first turn in 3rd.

Robbie came through sixth and immediately passed 3 guys on the first straight- again placing him 3rd. He diced back and forth with Levi LaVallee between 2nd and third.

Lap 22 Robbie had Levi; Lap 23 Levi passed Robbie leaving Robbie with a 3rd overall in the Mod Class for the weekend.

ROSS MARTIN TAKES HOME TWO PRO PODIUMS

Press Release –

Judnick Motorsports arrives in Canada for the Ski-doo Grand Prix de Valcourt with our Semi-Pro, Dylan Martin out for the season with a broken leg suffered a few weeks earlier; Pro Racer, Matt Judnick plagued by a hand injury from Canterbury (torn ligaments in his hand & dislocated finger) which makes it almost impossible to hang on to the sled. But you can’t keep a good team down.We still have Ross Martin in our arsenal – our extremely talented, determined Pro Racer.

Ross hit the track Saturday for practice focused on bringing one home for the team where he suffers a shoulder dislocation not once, but twice. (OUCH!!!)

But a bound and determined Martin gets taped up tight and heads back on the track. He makes the Pro Super Stock Final through the last chance qualifier, which means Ross will have to start the final in the back row. Incredibly, the flag drops and tough guy Martin fights his way through the pack to bring home a 3rd place podium. Unbelievable!!!

It doesn’t stop there… Ross came back on Sunday after icing and resting his shoulder overnight, broke out a brand new Polaris Mod sled and friggin’WON THE PRO OPEN NATIONAL FINAL! Ross took the lead in the first turn and lead the entire 20 laps!

“After watching Ross out on the track on Sunday, I just knew. It was like Saturday’s injury never happened. He was smooth as silk and I told Tom Rager Jr, we are going to win the Pro Open today and WE DID!” said an extremely fired-up Scott Judnick (Team Owner)

“We went from a tough start… to dominating the podiums at an event previously dominated by Skidoo because of their home court advantage. It doesn’t get better than that.We are very excited!”

Polaris Oval Racer Sweeps Valcourt Grand Prix

Press Release –

It was fitting that in hockey-mad Canada, Polaris ice oval racer Dustin Wahl scored a hat trick.

The Greenbush, Minnesota, racer won the Pro Champ class – the premiere class at the Valcourt (Quebec) Grand Prix – three times in three days, establishing him as the most successful racer on ice during the February 15-17 racing.

Polaris racers also dominated in the Pro and Semi-Pro Formula 500 classes. Serge Ouellet finished first and second in each class over three days of racing and Jocelyn Perrault won Semi-Pro Formula 500 on February 15. Polaris racers filled at least six of the top 10 positions in all four Formula 500 races run at the Grand Prix.

But the big story of the weekend in Valcourt was Wahl’s dominance in the Pro Champ class. Valcourt is to Ski-doo what Roseau, Minnesota, is to Polaris: The home town and still the site of a major engineering and production facility.

So the folks in Valcourt take their ice oval racing seriously, and they like to see racers on the hometown brand win – especially in the high-profile classes.

But Wahl, the 2007 Snow Week magazine Racer of the Year, had his Polaris-powered Wahl Bros. Special dialed in, and he swept all three Pro Champ races, earning the unbridled respect of even the most loyal Ski-doo fans.

Wahl’s teammate Brandon Johnson kept getting better throughout the weekend, but didn’t quite earn a spot on the podium. Johnson finished sixth, fifth and fourth, respectively, on Friday through Sunday.

Polaris Overflows the Podium at Valcourt

Press Release –

Polaris snocross racers strengthened their WPSA stronghold on the points leads in the premier classes as they won both Pro titles and one of two Semi-Pro titles at the Grand Prix de Valcourt in Valcourt, Quebec, on Feb. 16.

Ross Martin (Judnick Motorsports) won the Pro Open class and Dennis Eckstrom (Scheuring Speed Sports) won the Pro Super Stock class as Polaris racers dominated the podiums in both classes. Polaris racers finished 1-2 in Pro Open and overflowed from the Pro Super Stock podium with a 1-2-3-4 finish.

Polaris racers currently hold the top four spots in the WPSA Pro Open and Pro Super Stock points races with two races left on the schedule.

In Semi-Pro racing, Polaris racer Andrew Johnstad (Avalanche Racing) won the Semi-Pro Open class and finished second in Super Stock. The strong showing helped him emerge as the WPSA points leader in both Semi-Pro classes.

Since the Valcourt event features a large slate of ice oval races, only the Pro and Semi-Pro classes competed in snocross.

Polaris Racers Dominate Pro Open Class

The Polaris snocross racing contingent is deep, talented and fast on their Polaris IQ® Race Sleds – claims reflected in the Pro points standings.

In Pro Open at Valcourt, Ross Martin took the victory and Levi LaVallee (Hentges Racing) finished second. Polaris racers earned three of the top five positions and five of the top nine as TJ Gulla (Hentges Racing) finished fifth, Eckstrom was eighth and Mike Schultz (Avalanche Racing) was ninth. Shaun Crapo (Scheuring Speed Sports) finished 11th and Parker Brown was 15th.

Gulla leads in Pro Open points and departed from Valcourt with a 7-point lead over Ross Martin, who is in second. LaVallee is third and Eckstrom is fourth. Only 32 points separate the top four racers. Crapo is in eighth and Mike Schultz is 10th.

Pro Super Stock Podium Full of IQ Racers

The Polaris racers finished 1-4 in Pro Super Stock and filled five of the top eight spots in the class. Eckstrom took the victory, followed by Gulla, Ross Martin and Crapo in second, third and fourth, respectively. LaVallee finished eighth, Danny Poirier (Hulten Speed Sports) was 11th and Mike Schultz was 12th.

The win gave Eckstrom a solid 24-point lead over Ross Martin in the Pro Super Stock points standings. Third in points is Gulla, followed by Mike Schultz in fourth, Crapo in sixth, LaVallee in eighth and Matt Judnick in 12th.

Johnstad Sets the Semi-Pro Pace

Andrew Johnstad continued his career-best season by winning the Semi-Pro Open class at Valcourt to give him a 4-point lead in the standings ahead of fellow Polaris racer Bobby LePage (Hentges Racing). Brett Bender (Hentges Racing) finished fourth in Semi-Pro Open at Valcourt, followed by LePage in fifth, Mike Bauer (Kafka Motorsports) in 14th and David Joanis (Royal Distributing/Borque’s Polaris) in 15th.

In Semi-Pro Super Stock, Johnstad finished second, followed by Bauer (fourth), Matt Bristow (Bristow racing) in fifth and Bender (seventh). Johnstad currently has an 11-point lead over the second-place racer in the points race, while Bender is in fourth, Bauer is in fifth, LePage is in sixth and Chris Kafka (Hentges Racing) is in sixth.

Kawagoe Captures 7th Overall

Press Release –

While Masafumi Terasaki took the fastest start in the first heat but Tomonori Matsuda (A) overtook him in the first corner. He was followed by Hironori Hayashi (S), Masaki Sasaki (S) and then Terasaki.

Terasaki, who was running fourth on the first lap, took a fall and was left behind. Other Yamaha riders entered the second lap with Nobuaki Eikura in 8th, Kiyotaka Kawagoe in 9th and Shinji Tozawa in 11th position. On that second lap it was Eikura who took a spill and lost several places.

In the third lap, Kawagoe’s 7th position made him Yamaha’s leading rider. In the top group, Tomosuke Sano (S) led the race but in the latter half Matsuda and Sasaki closed the gap so that by lap ten Matsuda had emerged in the lead.

Matsuda, however, took a tumble, giving Sano the lead once more. But Sasaki immediately grabbed first position and went on to win. Sano took 2nd and Matsuda finished 3rd.

Yamaha rider results: Kawagoe, who displayed stable riding throughout, finished 5th while Eikura, who had fallen, recovered to finish 6th. Although Tozawa was in 8th position at one stage he dropped two places in the latter half to finish 10th and Terasaki closed in to come 12th. Daishi Takamura did not compete in this round.

In the second heat, despite a good start by Eikura and Kawagoe, the two bumped into each other and lost ground as a result. Tozawa, however, dominated the scramble at the start and was followed by Terasaki.

The order at the end of the first lap was Tozawa, Matsuda, Hajime Matsuno (P) and Terasaki, but in the third lap Matsuda emerged in first. In contrast, Tozawa was gradually left behind, allowing Matsuda a runaway lead. Matsuda subsequently kept his hold on the lead to win, capturing his second overall victory this season.

In 2nd was Sano, who rose to second position in lap seven. In 3rd was Sano who battled with Seiichi Akutsu (S), and Akutsu eventually won out.

Although Tozawa managed to maintain second place until the middle stages, he later dropped down to 5th position and a battle developed with Terasaki who was in 6th.

Terasaki won this to take 5th while Tozawa took 6th place. Kawagoe was behind in 12th position in the early stages but ran an aggressive race to finish in 9th place.

Eikura, who was running in 9th position, ran off the course on lap six, which caused him to drop back to a 12th place finish.
