LinQ Adapter Brackets by Up North Technologies

0

Ski-Doo’s LinQ cargo attachment system has long been admired as the best way to connect cargo bags and accessories to a snowmobile.

Up-North Technologies specializes in developing and marketing innovative powersport accessories and has answered the LinQ prayers of Arctic Cat, Polaris and Yamaha owners.

The company’s universal LinQ adapter brackets are available in Single (LMP-1) and Dual (LMP-2) position configurations for many current model snowmobiles.

Each bracket system is comprised of 3-piece construction, with the quarter-inch Aluminum CNC laser-cut top plate secured to a pair of extruded aluminum tubes that quickly and easily fasten to the tunnel surface.

All bracket systems go through a two-phase finishing process where each part is Yellow Chromate anodized and then finished off with a black powder coat finish.

This not only ensures the toughest wear resistance, but the finely textured black finish also blends well with any tunnel and sled color.

Turcotte Takes Gold at X Games

It must be nice to walk in Brett Turcotte’s shoes right now. In front of a high-energy crowd at Buttermilk Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, the 29-year-old from Kamloops, Canada, claimed the top spot in Snowmobile Freestyle at X Games Aspen 2018 in a heated final session against the sport’s top riders.

Fresh off last night’s win in Snowmobile Speed & Style, the Monster Energy teamrider is now on track to make history with a first-ever Gold medal three-peat at a winter X Games when he competes in Snow Bike Best Trick on Sunday.

In tonight’s final, eight competitors took two runs each to post the highest score on the Snow Park Technologies-designed Freestyle track. Riders had a choice between launching off two Super Kicker ramps as well as an all-snow jump. As the session got going, the crowd in Aspen was treated to some new stunts never unveiled before in a competition.

Having battled some heavy injuries in 2017, Turcotte came into the finals with such a never-seen-before move. Straight out the gate, the Snocross racer-turned snowmobile freestyler pulled a move otherwise only known in motocross circles: A full Body Varial, rotating 360 degrees in his seat in mid-air, made X Games history as a move never seen before on a sled.

Also known as a “California Roll,” the move started Turcotte’s run on a high note, and he followed it up by rifling off a series of tricks including a KOD Flip (short for “Kiss of Death”), Super Flip, Coyote Indy – a backflip performed hanging from the handlebar, twisting his body sideways while kicking his feet. With a high-flying backflip over the snow-to-snow jump as the exclamation mark on a perfect routine, Turcotte locked in the top spot at 90.33 points after Run 1.

His close rival from last night’s Speed & Style event, Levi LaVallee, battled hard to take away the top spot, but Turcotte further cemented his lead on the second run. Raising the level of difficulty with a one-handed Superman Seat Grab and landing his upside-down moves with authority, Turcotte also blew away the crowd by adding a no-handed landing to his innovative Body Varial for a 92.00 point score and the win.

Upon winning Gold today, Turcotte said: “Winning double Gold is just insane! I worked my butt off this year and really got a lot of motivation from being hurt all summer and not being able to do anything that scares me. So I went out there and did a whole bunch of scary stuff all at once – and it paid off. I’m also looking forward to Sunday. I’m motivated to win three medals.”

Tonight’s Gold marks Turcotte’s fifth X Games medal (2 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze).

He will also be competing in Sunday’s Snow Bike Best Trick and now has a shot at becoming the first athlete ever to win three Gold medals at a Winter X Games; a feat only achieved by three athletes at Summer X Games to date.

And even if he wins Silver or Bronze, Turcotte still makes history as the second rider ever to claim three medals at a single Winter X Games event.

Also putting on a strong show tonight, Monster Energy’s Joe Parsons – the world’s most decorated snowmobiler with 17 X Games medals – landed a series of spectacular airs including his signature Gator Wrestler. He landed a never-seen-before Backflip Half Body Varial into a highly difficult backward landing – but after the buzzer – and had to settle for an 81.00 point score and seventh place.

Parson’s Monster Energy teammate Heath Frisby, who could not lock down the Freestyle run he wanted tonight, will also be competing in the inaugural Snow Bike Best Trick on Sunday, next to freestyle motocross innovator and Monster Energy teammate Jackson Strong from Australia.

ESPN and ABC will televise a combined 15.5 hours of live X Games Aspen 2018 coverage, which will also be accessible via the ESPN App to viewers who receive their video subscription from an affiliated provider. HYPERSLED ENGINES: SKI-DOO E-TEC 850

0

Ski-Doo turned the tables on everyone else building 2-stroke hypersleds when it bumped its flagship engine to 850 ccs. However, that wasn’t the whole story.

The company needed to get rid of its former 800’s reputation for questionable durability and create a very strong image of reliability for the new 850.

Interestingly, although this big-inch twin’s focus is on offering the most power in its class, the goal was actually to build an engine that would last as long as a 4-stroke.

First thing the engineers did was move away from the old multi-segment pressed-together crank and go to a more costly 2-piece forged one.

This is definitely 4-stroke territory and the next big feature moved them close to diesel durability: Piston failure had been an issue and so the designers moved to special forged aluminum pistons with pressed-in cast iron ring lands.

This technology had much to do with heat dissipation but also prevented wear around the ring lands as the piston moved up and down through its cycles after zillions of RPMs.

Next, Rotax addressed the issue of bottom end lubrication: Formerly, sealed bearings had been used on E-TECs and there was no injected or scavenged oil getting into the crankcase.

This meant very high crankcase temps and the need to use liquid-cooled crankcases on the 800 to preserve the crankshaft and rod bearings.

By using a new pinpoint oiling system, carefully metered, Ski-Doo is ensuring there’s sufficient lube for critical bottom end parts.

We were skeptical at first the new engine may be a vibrator, but despite its big dimensions, this engine is as smooth as silk.

Throttle response is excellent at lower RPM and it really hauls booty up top – a noticeable winner over both competitive 800s.

HYPERSLED ENGINES: ARCTIC CAT 800 DSI CTEC-2

0

We waited a long time for this new engine from Cat and the most tempting part was it had an excellent model preceding it, the 600 CTEC-2. Naturally, we were expecting greatness from it.

The key element to keep in mind with this engine is the difference in the way it lubricates its bottom end compared to the squeaky-clean Ski-Doo E-TEC.

Ski-Doo’s Direct Injection technology on both the former 800 and 600 allowed no fuel or oil mix into the crankcase (although the new 850 actually does have a pinpoint oiling system) and lubricates the sealed bearings down there with a special permanent grease.

In the Arctic Cat DSI, which stands for Dual Stage Injection, the injectors are located on the cylinder (not in the transfer port) and inject oil and gas mix onto the top of the piston as it’s moving to bottom dead center.

When the piston is at top dead center again the injectors spray oil and gas mixture into the crankcase through the slot machined into the side of the piston. Thus DSI allows gasoline to cool the bottom end and oil to lube it at the same time.

This makes for great reliability but it’s harder to get super-clean EPA results with any 2-stroke allowing fuel into the bottom end.

Good results are accomplished on the DSI with very precise fuel and oil monitoring from an electronic oil pump and tight EFI calibration.

Since fuel and oil are being injected into the crankcase and not just randomly scavenged like on the old 800, amounts can be regulated to a very lean condition without damaging the crank or rod bearings.

The cylinder walls and piston rings are carefully lubed the same way by the mixture being transferred onto the top of the piston.

Cat has been able to maintain excellent durability with this design and because of its precise fuel metering, is both EPA clean and offers a much more responsive tip-in at the throttle.

The net result is more torque at low speeds and comparable top end at the end of the lake.

MOST ANTICIPATED 2018 SLEDS: Polaris Switchback XCR 800

0

Here’s one I’m personally really excited about:

Why get excited about a simple rendition of a sled we’ve already seen? What’s the big deal? Simple, it’s the perfect combination, and if you wanted an XCR last year, you couldn’t have it.

I understand many people prefer a short track sled in the 120-121 range, but not me. My track length of choice is 129 at minimum and 136 or 137, ideally.

On the other hand, my preferred Polaris model is the XCR because it blends the incredible handling of the Pro S with the big bump capability of the Pro X. It’s simply a perfect compromise.

This season I can have my proverbial cake, and eat it too. I can have my XCR, with all its racy goodies and characteristics with that 136-inch Switchback length track that offers more traction, better acceleration and, IMO, better handling and a better ride than the 120. If that’s not something to get excited about, I honestly just don’t know what is.

Every new snowmobile season brings a host of new iron and all of it is exciting in its own way. Maybe none of the new sleds on my list gets to you in same way it does me. We’re all different. We all ride differently and have different requirements and preferences. So not everyone’s list of “most exciting new sleds” is going to be the same.

This is my list, what’s yours?

Christian Brothers Racing Takes Four Podium Spots In Deadwood

Fertile, MN (January 24, 2018) – The Days of 76 rodeo complex in downtown Deadwood, South Dakota, played host to Rounds 7-8 of the snocross National tour this past January 19-20. It was borderline t-shirt weather in the Black Hills, with warm temperatures and sun during daytime racing and mild evenings. Christian Brothers Racing riders Logan Christian, Jacob Yurk and Anson Scheele brought the heat to their respective classes with all three riders finding steps on the podium.

Christian (doc/AMG Peterbilt/Arctic Cat) entered Deadwood looking to get back on pace after racing with the stomach flu at Rounds 5-6. He wasted no time, cruising through heat racing on Friday and posting a 2nd place podium finish. He came back Saturday nearly matching his heat performances and missing the last podium spot after an unfortunate off dropped him a spot to a 4th place finish.

“My mechanics, Betsy Halvorson, D.J. Ekre and Mike Carver really had my Arctic Cat ready to rock this weekend,” Christian said. “We have some more ideas we want to test during the break before New York. The team put in an awesome effort this weekend and they are the ones making this season so successful. We are halfway through and feeling stronger and faster than any season I can remember.”

Yurk (Country Cat/TDS Equipment/Arctic Cat) entered Deadwood after posting the best weekend of his career in the Pro Lite class with a win and a 3rd place finish. Deadwood brought a bigger challenge to the racer and his crew, throwing all kinds of obstacles at them both on and off the track.

“We’ve had a lot of success so far this season and Deadwood taught us the value of staying positive and keeping our heads down, working hard to solve problems,” said Yurk. “No matter what happened we stayed positive and it paid off with a 3rd place finish on Saturday. For me, Deadwood is the most challenging circuit both physically and mentally, so I’m happy to be leaving healthy and with a podium.”

Scheele (Country Cat/Speedwerx/Arctic Cat) continues to set the pace in Jr. 16-17, taking the win on Friday. He came back Saturday to take 3rd place in Jr. 14-15.

Christian Brothers Racing gave away their fourth Troy Lee Designs Helmet. As the drawing winner, Lucas Terry took home a Troy Lee Designs SE 4 Youth Factory Helmet. In addition to Troy Lee Helmets at every event, race fans also have the chance to enter to win an Arctic Cat ZR 200 snowmobile. The giveaway is open to fans 17 years old and younger and they must be signed up by a legal parent or guardian. Only one entry will be allowed for each eligible fan per event. The winner will be drawn Saturday, March 17, 2018 at the ACS Lake Geneva Grand Finale in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and need not be present to win.

Next up for Christian Brothers Racing snocross riders is the U.S. Air Force Snocross National at Seneca Allegany Resort & Casino in Salamanca, New York, February 16-17.
