New Polaris R&D Center to Open

0

In mid-June Polaris broke ground on their future research and development center near Wyoming, Minnesota.

The 100,000 square foot facility is slated to be completed by fall 2005. The new multi-million dollar facility will be used for development and improvement of current and future Polaris recreational and utility vehicles.

Upon completion Polaris will have seven operating facilities encompassing the management, marketing, development and manufacture of their products.

Early Testing Location

Racers looking for the first opportunity to get in a few laps and test this fall need to contact Ronald Cantin in Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec. RN is about 10 hours from Buffalo, New York and twenty hours from Northern Minnesota.

Beginning November 15th thru 19th Ronald is promising to have snow and a full-on snocross track ready for racers to use for testing purposes. Cantin will be charging $50.00 (CDN) per rider for the use of the track on a daily basis.

The CSRA’s Season Opener National Snocross will take place after the testing sessions on November 20th and 21st. That’s one week before the WSA’s Duluth Spirit Mountain National set for (US) Thanksgiving weekend.

If you are interested in testing or attending the CSRA National, call (819)763-6691.

Communicators OK at Races

0

This past winter we spotted at least one snocross racing team using Collett’s new Race Communication system made legal by a new ISR rule allowing Pro class riders to use one-way communication with a track side spotter.

Obviously, the communication flow must be from the spotter to the racer. These helmet mounted units use similar technology to Collett’s Platinum 900 series two way communicators in use by thousands of snowmobilers for over a decade.

We spoke to Evinrude/Ski-Doo/Supertrax riders Noel Kohanski and A.J. Lester using the set-up and without exception, once they got comfortable with being abused by their spotter for picking stupid lines, found the communication very useful.

Clearly, most forms of motorized racing employ driver/spotter communication. With visibility always an issue in snocross and the rapidly changing nature of the racing surface, this set-up will become more popular this year.

More Power

0

If you’re anything like us, enough is never enough when it comes to power in things motorised. In our ongoing quest to “power up” our tow vehicles we’ve come across an absolute home run.

Heath Mulock of Hot Rod Diesel has an incredible passion to squeeze every bit of available horsepower & torque out of a diesel motor. He suggests the Edge module along with the Attitude adjuster/monitor on our GMC Sierra’s Duramax equipped engine. The Edge module adds an incredible 150 hp and up to 350 lb.-ft. of stump pulling torque!!

The best part about this mod is that it’s a very simple “plug & play” install. No costly time consuming complicated engine mods required here – just about as simple as plugging your X-Box into the TV.

Adjustability is on the fly with the up and down arrows on the Attitude monitor – choose from an extra 60 to 150 hp as the situation requires. The readout will monitor and show up to 4 different functions including: power level, egt, turbo boost, tire corrected road speed, engine temp., engine rpm, and transmission slippage – you choose which 4.

Island Signs with Warnert

It should come as no surprise to snocross racing enthusiasts Michael Island won last winter’s prestigious X-Games for Ski-Doo and Warnert Racing.

Island who hails from Barrie, Ontario has been racing WSA snocross for four years now and proved he is truly a national championship contender by placing second overall in the WSA Pro Open National Championship series in 2004.

With Blair Morgan returning last season after a devastating motocross injury suffered early in the 2003 CMRC Canadian Nationals, many felt Island would be the rider to dethrone Morgan.

Of course, breaking Morgan’s X-Games streak was significant but we’re sure Island will be focusing on a WSA National Championship for the 2005 season. Island has signed on with Warnert and Ski-Doo for the next two seasons.

Todd Wolfe Signs with Polaris

In a dramatic move in the racing world, long time Ski-Doo cross country champion and snocross racer Todd Wolfe took his formerly yellow Hentges Racing Team to Polaris this spring.

Wolfe’s corps of riders and tractor trailers have all been painted in Polaris colors for the 2005 racing season.

This news comes as a bit of a shock as it was only one year ago Ski-Doo honored Todd’s retirement from racing by presenting him with a new sled, plaques and handshakes.

Wolfe’s name has been synonymous with Ski-Doo racing and his multiple I-500 cross country wins are part of a Ski-Doo’s racing legacy.

While Todd no longer races himself, his expertise, advice and ability to train drivers has got to be welcome at Polaris. Things change quickly in snocross!

Kohanski Wins CSRA

Many Supertrax readers know we support the WSA (World Snocross Association) and the CSRA (Canadian Snowcross Racing Association) national championship series in both the US and Canada.

We also support the Evinrude/Ski-Doo/Supertrax Super Team. As a result of the racing talents of WSA Star Noel Kohanski, the team seized both the CSRA’s National 440 and National Pro Open Championships this season.

Kohanski burned up the CSRA’s National Tour scoring consistently all winter and winning more final rounds than any driver. Kohanski’s Pro class team mate A.J. Lester (a regular test rider here at Supertrax) raced the entire national tour while recovering from a serious knee injury earned in the 2003 season.

Despite being advised by doctors not to race this season he scored a solid fourth overall in the CSRA’s National Pro Open Series.

On top of these successes, the team’s Semi-Pro rider, Matt Turner (featured on the current cover of Supertrax airing out the new IQ 900 Fusion), tallied a solid second overall in the CSRA’s National Semi-Pro Championships in both 440 and Open. L

ook for Lester and Turner to return this season contesting the CSRA’s Pro National and Regional Championship Series.

Yamaha Extended Service

Yamaha Motor Corporation, USA, offers a high level of support for snowmobile customers with its competitive limited warranty. Yamaha’s Extended Service (Y.E.S.) plan provides unmatched peace-of-mind coverage besides the regular warranty.

All new Yamaha snowmobiles can be covered by up to four years of Y.E.S. protection. When full coverage is added to the original one-year warranty, the owner can relax knowing the factory is standing behind his or her sled for a full five years, plus any early season extension.

Y.E.S. closely follows the program offered by the original factory warranty, with all repairs performed by authorized Yamaha dealers using genuine replacement parts.

What’s more, all Y.E.S. plans come with TRIP, which is Yamaha’s Travel and Recreation Interruption Protection. If the owner has unexpected expenses because of a covered breakdown, such as needing an extra night’s lodging, food, or a rental sled for continued vacation fun, TRIP is there to cover up to $150 per occurrence.

Yamaha Extended Service is available from authorized Yamaha Snowmobile dealers across the nation, and the cost of coverage can be included in Yamaha Factory Financing.

Customers can learn more about Y.E.S. by calling toll free 866-YES-EXTD, and can get an online quote at www.yamaha-motor.com.

Redline Progress Report

We received a call to our offices in April inviting us to Old Forge, New York for a ride on an honest-to-goodness Redline Revolt. Unfortunately, we were six hours from their location and temperatures were hovering near 55F.

By the time we made the trip, the snow would have disappeared. In any case, we suggested a more northern locale for a ride and were told it would happen. It didn’t.

As spring turned into summer a Press Release came from Redline indicating they were pursuing another $2 million (US) in financing to shore up plans to produce the snowmobiles dealers have ordered.

The latest we’ve seen on the sled confirmed some of our earlier assertions about Redline’s technology.

The wild T-15 rear skid used in all the protos we’ve seen so far has given way to a much more conventional two shock, parallel rear arm set-up.
