Phazer Wins USCC Sport 85 Championship

Press Release –

Aboard his 2009 Phazer® RTX, snowmobile racer Ryan Greening delivered Yamaha a well-deserved United States Cross Country (USCC) national championship in the Sport 85 class in Warroad, Minn. on Sunday, March 15.

The event was the seventh and final stop of the rugged cross-country race series, and the championship battle between four-stroke powered Greening and two-stroke rival Timmy Kallock came down to the final round.

Greening, coming off two wins and a second in the last three races, entered the finale with an eight-point lead, and knew he had to finish close to Kallock in order to take the championship.

With 50-degree temperatures and sunny skies, the weather was most hospitable for racing on the eight-mile course laid out on the shores and across the snowy surface of Minnesota’s gigantic Lake of the Woods.

But while the weather was agreeable, the conditions were anything but easygoing, with long taxing whoops sections on both the woodsy shoreline and frozen lake surface itself. Fortunately Greening drew the number-two position in the regulated start, with one sled leaving every 30 seconds.

Without the benefit of knowing exactly where his competitor was running, Greening took an aggressive approach from the get-go, driving hard on all three grueling laps around the course. The tactic worked.

With his natural aggressiveness and his Phazer RTX’s speed and handling, Greening stretched out a lead of some 15 seconds per lap on Kallock, building up a final victory margin of an incredible 42 seconds. Backing up Greening’s win, four of the top 10 machines in his class were Yamaha Phazers.

“I am so thankful for the great machine Yamaha builds and I’m excited to bring the championship home for them,” Greening said after the race. “I want to thank Brothers Motorsports, my local Yamaha dealer, for their support and I am looking forward to next year!” Yamaha Snowmobile racing coordinator Jesse Strege added, “The amazing thing about Ryan is that while he has a strong motocross racing background, this is his first year of racing sleds. He rides the heck out of the machine and is so much fun to watch. He just throws caution to the wind and gives his maximum effort every time. Amazingly, Ryan raced the same sled all year with no DNFs, thanks to the durability of the Phazer and the tuning efforts of Rick Strobel from Fox Racing Shocks, who put his heart and soul into the preparation of the machine. It was definitely a fun experience!”

2010 SKI-DOO MX-Z XRS: Ride Quality Delivered

0

By: Mark Lester

Remember the 2007 MX-Z XRS? We do and so does our orthodontist. That attempt at delivering an oh-so-close-to-a-real-racer left us with loose fillings and a sizable chiropractic bills.

Ski-Doo was well aware of how poorly the ‘07 XRS rode after being inundated with agonizing cries from the consumer and for MY 10 the XRS concept returns to the lightweight XP platform with tons of experience.

The new XP XRS features the sweetest Kayaba dampers ever mounted on a production sled – including gloves-on adjustable clickers. The shocks have both high and low speed damping adjustments on the compression side and a rebound clicker.

The entire XRS package drips with racer inspiration however, the calibration is diametrically opposite to the XP 600 RS it so accurately mirrors. This is great news for the wannabe crowd with a stock spring and valving package we’ve had the privilege of testing ourselves.

The sled can be clicked considerably softer for less aggressive lightweights and bumped up to what we’d consider serious ditch damping by simply twisting the red knobs on the front IFS shocks and the rear arm skid shock.

There’s a wide range of appeal here, but get this straight – even if you click to full-on, super-duper hard the XP XRS never approaches the level of stiffness displayed by the much maligned MY 07 XRS.

So, is this a credible trail sled? Yes, yes and yes. There’s little doubt the new XRS in 600 E-TEC trim (our favorite) or in Power-Tek 800 tune (for now) is a home run.

The inherent balance in this chassis is superb. It handles with telepathic accuracy carving lines through twisty trails like a Veg-O-Matic slicing spuds on Julienne.

Those who belly up to the sales desk for a copy are going to get as much racer as anyone is offering this year.

Another podium finish for Hayden

Press Release –

It was another banner weekend for Iain Hayden as he put his Yamaha Factory Racing four-stroke FX Nytro® developmental sled on the podium for the second weekend in a row. Hayden ran a very strong Pro-Open final at Round 7 of the AMSOIL® Championship Snocross Tour in Hayward, WI to snare a third place finish in the premier sno-cross race circuit.

His teammate, Steve Taylor, still struggling with an injured foot, had to settle for 11th at the checkered on the highly technical LCO Casino Lodge & Convention Center track. Warm temperatures earlier in the week, followed by freezing weather ensured that the track was even tougher than usual.

Huge crowds were on hand as the best snocross drivers in the world got together to contest the penultimate round in the eight-round ISOCTM Championship Series. Although he got off to a tepid start, Hayden had no trouble qualifying, running a tight heat race that saw him finish in fifth.

This result gave him a ninth gate pick on the front starting row for the final. Taylor, who grabbed seventh in his heat, was forced to go to the LCQ for another shot at a main event starting position. After rocketing out of the gate to hammer down the holeshot, Taylor settled into a pace that saw him record fourth at the finish line.

In the grueling final, Hayden pegged the holeshot with his lightning fast FX Nytro®, set the fastest lap of the 26 lap race and dominated the proceedings for 17 laps. Changing track conditions and lapped traffic bunched up the leaders and after dicing back and forth with Brett Bender and Robbie Malinoski, Hayden eventually settled for third at the flag.

“This is what we’ve been aiming for all season, to break into the top three and we finally did it,” said Hayden. “Getting a front row start makes all the difference in the world. It would have been nice to keep that lead all the way through but a podium finish is a podium finish. The four-stroke power of the FX Nytro® is definitely a force to be reckoned with.”

Taylor’s weekend, unfortunately, did not unfold as smoothly. After qualifying on the back row for the final, he was never able to connect with the front runners and had to race hard just to turn a last place start into 11th by the end of the 26 laps.

“I actually had to let off on the Nytro’s power at the start because I was bunched up at the back and by the end of the race my foot was really bothering me,” said Taylor. “It was not an ideal racing weekend for me by any means.”

At the end of the day a happy Yamaha Factory Sno-cross team manager Andre Laurin commented: “The whole team has been working hard this season and this podium finish is rewarding. It shows that Yamaha leads the industry with its 4-stroke technology.”

Polaris Takes Both Pro Classes at Hayward Snocross

Press Release –

Brett Bender Wins Pro Open and TJ Gulla Wins Pro Super Stock

Polaris snocross racers won both Pro classes in ISOC racing at Hayward, Wis., on March 6-8, and they head to the season finale poised to win points titles in both classes and possibly finish 1-2-3 in Pro Open points.

Points titles will be determined at the final race of the ISOC season, scheduled for March 20-22 at Lake Geneva, Wis.

PRO OPEN: Bender Wins & Teammates Stand 1-2-3

At Hayward, Brett Bender (Hentges Racing) continued to come on strong in his first full season as a Pro racer, earning his second-straight Pro Open victory and rising up to third in class points.

Matt Judnick (Judnick Motorsports) finished fourth at Hayward and TJ Gulla (Hentges Racing) was seventh, followed by Andrew Johnstad (Avalanche Racing) in ninth and Levi LaVallee (Hentges Racing) in 10th.

That sets the stage for what could be an historic performance by teammates: Heading into the final race of the season, three Hentges Racing racers stand 1-2-3 in Pro Open points. Gulla is in first with 198 points, LaVallee is second with 185 and Bender is third with 173 points.

Other Polaris racers in the top 10 in points are Judnick in ninth and Shaun Crapo (Amsoil/US Air Force) in 10th.

PRO SUPER STOCK: Gulla Wins Again

Gulla made it a Hentges Racing Pro-class victory sweep and solidified his place near the top of the standings by winning the Pro Super Stock class in Hayward. Crapo was third, Judnick was sixth and Johnstad was 10th.

Polaris racers are dominating the Pro Super Stock standings, and three of them are now solidly in the hunt for the class points title. LaVallee is currently second in the standings with 195 points, the same as the leader, who holds a tiebreaker advantage (best finish in the most recent race) over LaVallee.

Gulla is fourth in points, just one point out of third and only 11 behind the current leader, and Crapo is fifth in points, 10 behind Gulla and still within reach of the title.

Polaris racers hold five of the top 10 spots and eight of the top 13 places in the point standings. DJ Eckstrom (Amsoil/US Air Force) is eighth, Bender is 10th, and Johnstad, Judnick and Bobby LePage (Hentges Racing) are 11-13, respectively.

SEMI-PRO: LePage Puts on Charge for Open Title

In Semi-Pro Open racing at Hayward, Bobby LePage (Hentges Racing) finished fourth to put himself second in the points standings, just 11 behind the leader. Polaris racers Chris Kafka (Hentges Racing), Derek Ellis (Avalanche Racing) and Mike Bauer (Judnick Motorsports) hold positions 7-8-9, respectively, in the points race.

In Pro Women Super Stock, Kendra Daniel (CMR Racing) finished third at Hayward and is currently sixth in points. Kendra Dallmann (LePage Racing) finished second in Sport Women Super Stock and is solidly in second place in the class points standings.

Joe Fallen (Fallen Racing) took first in Sport Super Stock 2 and Andrew Lieders (Lieders Racing) finish fourth, which keeps him atop the points list and gives him a 20-point margin with one race remaining.

In the Junior classes at Hayward, James Johnstad (Avalanche Race Team) finished second in Jr. 14-15 and fourth in Jr. 16-17. He is the points leader in both classes. Brett Nastala (Redline Racing), who won Jr. 16-17 at Hayward, is second in class points.

Team Arctic Takes Two in Hayward

Press Release –

Top Finishes, Championship Point Leads Highlight the Weekend

The adage, “You can’t win ‘em all,” proved true for Team Arctic at the penultimate round of the ISOC National Snocross Series in Hayward, Wis.

For the first time during the 2008-’09 season, Team Arctic didn’t score a victory in one of the men’s Pro or Semi Pro classes. Yet even without victories in the premier classes, Team Arctic left Hayward with wins in Pro Women and Sport Super Stock finals, and podium finishes in the big classes.

In the Pro Super Stock final, Garth Kaufman scored a second-place finish to put himself into a tie for the championship points lead with one race remaining. Teammates Ryan Simons and Matt Piche were close to standing on the podium with their fourth and fifth place finishes, with Simons pushing himself to third in the points chase. Kaufman fifth place was also the highest-placing Cat in Pro Open.

Despite not standing on top of the box, Team Arctic’s Semi Pros swarmed the two finals in dominating fashion. In Semi Pro Open, Dan Ebert and Christian Salemark finished two-three to keep their championship hopes alive.

Salemark also nailed a second in Semi Pro Super Stock, with teammate Logan Christian taking fifth. And though he didn’t factor into the final podium positions, Cory Davis left Hayward with the Stock points lead.

“It was a mixed bag for us in the Pro and Semi Pro classes,” said Team Arctic Race Manager, Mike Kloety. “Podium finishes are a huge accomplishment, and we look pretty good in the championship point races. But we also suffered some disappointment, namely Dan Ebert’s thigh injury in the Stock final and Carl Schubitzke’s heal injury in the Pro class.”

Not surprisingly, Hayward also hosted a couple of big wins for the team. The first came in the Pro Women’s final, where J.C. Hupe notched her second win of the national season ahead of April Moritz, with series point leader Carly Davis taking fourth.

The second win went down in the Sport Super Stock #1 final, where season star Cody Thomsen lead a Team Arctic sweep of five of the top-six positions. Andrew Carlson busted out his best performance of season, taking third in the Stock final and second in Sport Open.

The final ISOC National Snocross of the season is March 20-22 in Lake Geneva, Wis. Learn more at www.isocracing.com.

Ski-Doo Donates Over $105,000 Value to OFSC Clubs

Press Release –

BRP Contribution Helps Volunteers Improve Snowmobile Trails

Snowmobile clubs across Ontario are recipients of over $105,000 in value from the Ski-Doo Million Dollar Club Support Program. This generous contribution will assist volunteers with trail operations thanks to BRP, maker of Ski-Doo snowmobiles.

OFSC clubs received almost $84,000 cash, $9,000 in Parts, Accessories & Clothing contributions and one very lucky recipient, the New Dundee Snowmobile Club, was awarded a 2009 Ski-Doo 50th Anniversary Special Edition MX Z snowmobile valued at $12,599.

81% of clubs belonging to the Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs (OFSC) participated in the Ski-Doo Million Dollar Club Support Program, which ran from coast to coast last fall. Invented and manufactured in Canada, Ski-Doo snowmobiles are the world’s best selling brand.

“We are very grateful to BRP for recognizing and supporting the Go Snowmobiling efforts of our club volunteers with this contribution,” said Bruce Robinson, OFSC President. “Ski-Doo has partnered with us from the beginning of organized snowmobiling over 40 years ago and we hope every OFSC snowmobiler appreciates their giving back so generously today to improve our trails.”

The Ski-Doo Million Dollar Club Support Program also helped build stronger local connections between clubs and their local Ski-Doo dealers, who actively participated by setting up displays promoting the program. Many dealers will be making Club Support Program presentations to local clubs in the coming weeks.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is dedicated to providing strong leadership and support to member clubs and volunteers, to establishing and maintaining quality snowmobile trails which are used in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, and to furthering the enjoyment of organized snowmobiling.

When Will We See an 800 E-TEC?

We wonder if we’ll ever see the previously rumored introduction of a limited build E-TEC 800 in Ski-Doo’s XP chassis.

This has been talked up for almost a year now (see: Limited Build Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec) and dealers appear ready to move their customers into the “next step” in direct injection technology – an 800/850-class rooster.

We’ve been anticipating Ski-Doo landing a limited-build E-TEC 800, but market conditions might affect these plans and other new sled intros too.
