Polaris Asphalt Drag Racer Wins 3rd Straight Title

Press Release –

In any season, on any surface, Polaris Winning Performance puts Polaris racers into the winner’s circle.

Polaris racer Jeff Cullen proved that on July 15 when he won the “Power Adder King of the Tar” title for the third straight year in the National Pro Sled Shootout.

His Abbott Powersports / PCS Performance Polaris asphalt race sled ran an 8.34-second quarter-mile at 160.9 mph at the ESTA Dragstrip in Cicero, New York.

The sled’s nitrous oxide-equipped race engine produces approximately 400 hp, yet in the Pro-Shoot Out final, Cullen and his Polaris race sled beat a 450-hp Arctic Cat with nitrous and a turbo Charger.

The Pro Sled Shootout was one of the largest snowmobile asphalt drag events in the country; attracting the sport’s largest entry list of the season.

Team sponsor/owner David Abbott of F.M. Abbott Power Equipment, a Polaris dealership in East Waterboro, Maine, said Cullen’s sled is capable of better times and faster speeds on dragstrips with surfaces better than that of the Cicero track.

“At national events on good tracks, that sled will run under 8.20 all the time,” Abbott said. On the Cicero strip, he said, “the [sled’s] track was spinning the whole way down the track. That sled runs 8 and teens and 166 on a good track.”

Cullen’s winning sled is built on a Polaris EDGE chassis that has been slightly modified and strengthened, according to Phil Stanley of PCS Performance, who helped build and tune the sled.

Other members of the team behind the winning entry included David Abbott and his wife Judy, mechanic Steve Stanley and Phil Stanley’s wife Kristin, who races a Polaris PRO X 1000 in the National Speed Association’s (NSA) Pro Stock competition.

The Power Adder class is an open motor class, with virtually no restrictions on the engine mods and additives allowed.

Major upcoming events on the NSA schedule include an August 18th raceat Maryland Int’l. Raceway in Mechanicsville, Maryland, and September 8th with racing at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H.

The Abbott Powersports/PCS Performance team’s Polaris racers also plan to compete in the American Snowmobiler Magazine Shootout tentatively scheduled for September 26 at the Knoll Gas Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan.

Which OEM Holds Top Sales Position?

Question:

Who is the #1 top seller of sleds in the world, then 2nd, 3rd and 4th?

Thank you,

Guy

Response:

Guy:

Five years ago the numbers would have looked a lot different but Ski-Doo, since the introduction of the REV, has been walking away with huge market share since 2003.

Right now, the word is BRP controls more than 40-percent of the snowmobile market in new sales. The other 60 or so percent is shared pretty much evenly by Yamaha, Arctic Cat and Polaris.

Those numbers are actually too close to call. One thing worth considering is the fact Yamaha has been gaining huge market share advances since it decided to become exclusively a 4-stroke snowmobile company. At the turn of the century it was languishing in 4th place with only about 10-percent of the market.

Lesson here? Big advances require gutsy moves. It’s no secret which OEMs have taken the hit with Ski-Doo and Yamaha making such big gains.

2008 Arctic Cat Sno Pro 600

Press Release –

The Weapon is Waiting to be Unleashed

The 2006-07 season is over but Team Arctic’s Engineering and Race Departments are prepared to launch a new battle iron assault for 2007-08!

Last year’s attack found Arctic Cat drivers finishing on top. Cat riders campaigning in the Pro classes combined to collect more podiums than any Team Arctic squad in years, and the group earned a slew of post-season awards too.

But that success was hardly limited to the Pro ranks – several Semi-Pro riders ruled their division and Cat was also well-represented in the Junior, Sport and Women’s classes.

The all-new 2008 Sno Pro is ready to make it’s rider a new-age hero. The entirely-new 2008 Sno Pro with an all-new featherweight chassis is powered by a potent 600cc engine built and designed to race on 92 octane fuel, while the overall 2” shorter spindle to rear axle length, combined with the 15” wide track puts the power to the ground in a hurry.

Arctic Cat is not resting lightly on its performance heritage, we’re out to crush all competition with an entirely-new weapon.

Team Blue Continues to Meet the 4-Stroke Challenge

Press Release –

Yamaha racing wraps up another year of high performance competition

No matter what type of snowmobile racing, Yamaha’s 4-stroke sleds posted several wins and podium finishes in the toughest events and circuits in the North American Snowbelt. From a 4-stroke Snocross win heard around the world, to Team Blue’s repeat dominance at the Soo I-500, Yamaha 4-stroke snowmobiles have become a force to be reckoned with on the track!

Snocross

Clearly the most exciting news for Yamaha race fans was Yamaha’s big Snocross victory at the WPSA National event in Brainerd, Minnesota. That historic event saw the first-ever heat win for a 4-stroke sled in a national Snocross as well as the sport’s first-ever win in the Pro Open class aboard a race-modified FX Nytro. Yamaha was successful for the rest of the season pulling in 11 more podium’s in heat races.

Cross Country

Adversity is the name of the game in racing. How a rider and machine can overcome the challenges before them defines how well they will do in competition. Champion racer Corey Davidson broke his leg in a motocross training accident just before the season got underway. He was back in the saddle, cast and all, for the Mille Lacs 300 in Garrison, MN, in which he won the Pro Open and took third in the Pro Stock classes of the two-race event. Davidson would go on to claim a number of top-10 cross country finishes, including another class win at the Grand 400.

Semi-Pro driver Travis Hjelle showed that a consistent season is the trail to a championship season in his rookie year. New to the series he had to learn the courses and how to compete in the USCC series. Even with all this adversity he prevailed as the season points champion in the Pro Open class and third in the Pro Stock class.

USCC’s Mach got in on the action as well, piloting a Phazer in the new Sport 85 class. He scored a second at the Munising 300. After his race, he had this to say about the Phazer as a race sled, “the sled felt really light. I think it’s because of the torque the motor has. I could burp the throttle and double through the big holes which helped me make up time.”

Enduro/Oval Racing

For the second consecutive year, a Yamaha Apex snowmobile has won the prestigious Soo I-500 endurance race in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. The winning team of Chad Gueco and co-driver Bill Wilkes simply dominated throughout the entire event on Saturday, February 3.

Last year’s winner Corey Davidson, driving with Travis Hjelle and Troy Hanson, put another Apex on the podium in third. Filling out the top five for Yamaha was the Loshaw Racing team of Shawn Ritchie and Terry Wright.

Yamaha 4-stroke sleds were consistently competitive in their classes again this season on the ice ovals, with two of the top three points finishers in MIRA’s marquee Pro Enduro class.

Yamaha’s #02 Pro team of Joel Diamond and Brent Versmeerch took second and the #85 Pro team of Darrell Howard, Mitch Diamond and Ryan Kohl earned third-place honors in the season overall. Diamond and Vermeersch capped off a strong series with a first place finish at the tough Michigan CAT 500 in Lincoln, Michigan.

Grass Drags

Allen Ulmer took his stock Apex RTX and modified Yamaha 4-stroke sleds through an undefeated season in SDSDRA’s Stock C and Improved Stock 600 classes last fall. Ulmer was backed up in the Stock C by Doug Killion, who earned the second place points championship on his Yamaha racer.

At Hay Days, Pat Hauck and Jerry Fix took home wins in Stock C and Stock E classes, each leading two other Yamaha in the finals.

Jerry Fix cleaned up the Pro Class competition at the NSRA’s WSA 500 in Jessup, IA and Semi-Pro racer Rocky Miller took home wins in two classes. Fix went on to win three season-end points championships in the NSRA: Stock 500, Stock 600 and Improved Stock 600 on his Yamaha sleds.

On the COSDRA grass racing circuit, Steve Agdorny climbed the podium frequently, thanks to his Yamaha 4-stroke sleds. Among his many accomplishments this past year, he won the Stock C class at the Hastings 500 and pulled a pair of seconds at the ISR World Series of Drag Racing.

Xenoy* 6620-GT Resins Gains CARB Approval

Press Release –

GE Plastics today announced that its Xenoy* 6620U-1001GT and 6620-BK1066GT injection-molding resins have been approved by the California Air Regulations Board (CARB) as an Innovative Product, offering manufacturers the opportunity to avoid tank permeation testing through the use of these materials.

Xenoy 6620-GT resins provide a one-step, monolayer solution to help meet CARB and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards governing vapor emissions from fuel tanks in lawnmowers, snow blowers, personal recreation vehicles, generators, and other off-road equipment. The goal is to reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

According to CARB’s Executive Order “It is ordered and resolved that no tank permeation data is required to be submitted in the certification process for equipment using GE’s Xenoy 6620U-1001GT and 6620-BK1066GT resins for an injection-molded fuel tank.”

This designation means companies using the GE material to mold small-engine fuel tanks with an average nominal wall thickness of 2.5 mm or greater, following process and material specifications as set out in Component Executive Order C-U-07-007, will be recognized as approved by CARB after submission – without the need to undergo costly and lengthy tank permeation tests.

“With this significant regulatory milestone, our Xenoy 6620-GT resins have become the only non-rotomolded solution currently recognized by CARB as an Innovative Product,” said Craig Williams, industry manager, Transportation at GE Plastics. “The simplicity and speed of injection-molding our materials is a sharp contrast to the complexity of traditional approaches such as multilayer extrusion blow molding. And by avoiding the need for tank-by-tank tests or group tests, manufacturers can cut cycle times even more.”

Xenoy 6620-GT resins avoid the high costs of traditional multilayer extrusion blow-molding processes, as well as the cost and time required for secondary fluorination of conventional monolayer molded tanks.

The materials also provide an outstanding balance of mechanical performance and weatherability, including excellent UV stability, and high- and low-temperature ductility. Xenoy 6620U-1001GT resin is available in natural, and Xenoy 6620-BK 1066GT resin is available in black.

Both resin grades not only comply with the current 2007/08 CARB standard, which limits fuel vapor emissions to 2.5g/m2/day for small off-road engines, but also comply with the tighter 2011/12 limit of 1.5g/m2/day. CARB requirements are becoming the de facto industry standard.

In addition, GE Plastics’ Xenoy X6800BM blow-molding resins are currently undergoing evaluation by CARB with the expectation that they will also receive approval as an Innovative Product for blow molding small-engine fuel tanks.

GE’s Xenoy 6620-GT injection-molding resins and Xenoy X6800BM blow-molding resins are available globally.

RydeFX Air 2.0 Springless Shocks

Arvin Meritor, makers of legendary RydeFX shocks, is pretty pumped about its all-new RydeFX Air 2.0 springless shocks (OEM equipment on 2008 Polaris Dragon models).

These actually use nitrogen instead of air and have two separate pressure chambers allowing for soft initial stroke and a firmer resistance to bottoming at full compression.

The use of nitrogen makes sense because air shocks are prone to pumping up from heat and air expands, increasing the overall spring rate and degrading ride quality.

The RydeFX design using nitrogen is more temperature stable and dual chambers provide vastly improved calibration possibilities across a broad range of rider weights and ridingstyles.

These are a full pound lighter than conventional coil-over shock dampers.
