Is a 175-Horse 1200 Ski-Doo in the Works?

Although Ski-Doo fans have put most of their buying focus on the new 600 E-Tec so far this year, the 1200 4-Tec has been holding its own in the sales races, too.

Demand for the sleds has been strong but many prospective buyers are taking a wait-and-see attitude with Ski-Doo’s first true high performance 4-stroke.

One dealer told us he was surprised at how many hyper-sled customers, who ride trails exclusively, were considering the 4-stroke because of its smooth and strong running 130hp mill.

Since it was first introduced in January this year, we’ve been hearing rumors from high places about the possibility of adding a supercharger, similar to the one Sea-Doo uses on a number of its watercraft and jet boats, to the 4-Tec to bring the power and torque of the mill up to hyper status.

Heavy on the minds of the top brass at Ski-Doo is Arctic Cat’s new sales theme, “World’s Fastest”.

With Arctic Cat owning the largest displacement 2-stroke right now (1000 twin) and the highest rated horsepower snowmobile (Z1 Turbo), we’re not sure the midnight oil isn’t burning in Valcourt to up the stakes on who really owns that title.

Noise Heard About a PowerTech Replacement

Supertrax has been hearing rumblings about a new big-inch 2-stroke from Ski-Doo.

With the recently reported sales success of the 600 E-Tec and its Ficht direct injection technology, it just makes sense Ski-doo would move the E-Tec further up the line.

As it is this year, the 800R Powertech engine already has the liquid cooled crankcases a direct injection mill requires and the 800R could easily be upgraded to direct injection by using the Ficht cylinders and heads adapted to the 800’s larger displacement bottom end.

Here’s what’s interesting about this rumor. The question has been raised: “If Ski-doo is going to follow the above plan, why would it limit displacement to 800ccs and about 150 horsepower?”

With Arctic Cat’s ’09 Twin Spar Turbo pumping out 170-plus hp, why would the new Ficht big bore be any less?

It just doesn’t fit Ski-Doo’s profile to come with less power. We’re looking for a new direct injected 850 or maybe even a 900.

E-Tec Is A Huge Hit

According to the early season feedback Supertrax has been getting from Ski-doo dealers, the new E-Tec 600 is a runaway sales success.

Many dealers are already sold out of the new direct injection mill and are attempting to get E-Tecs in any model configuration from other dealers in the network.

Apparently consumers are hooked on the technology and its promise to conserve impressive amounts of both gasoline and oil.

Interestingly, many potential buyers are walking past larger displacement models like the 800R and determining to ride a 600 this year because of its clean-burn benefits and longer riding range on a tank of fuel.

Limited Build Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec

If what we’re hearing is right, look for a limited build Ski-Doo 800 E-Tec sometime in February 2009.

Clearly the 800R engine in use for three seasons with Power-Tek cab/knock sensor induction was designed with E-Tec in mind.

Considering its output, this 150hp mill is already a gas mileage miser. With E-Tec Direct Injection, the 800 could become an over 20 mpg big horsepower mill.

Stay tuned…

Looking Forward To Happy Wanderers Trails

By: Dan Waters

There is no doubt that fall in Muskoka is stunning. The trees are turning and there is a chill in the air.

We look forward to the snow that will protect the forest floor so we can again enjoy Happy Wanderers trails.

The purchase of permits on or before December 1 will save you $50.00 per permit. We would like to thank all of you who use our trails and support Happy Wanderers and Baysville when you purchase your trail passes.

Lake of Bays has a few new businesses that you should visit including the Bearfoot Gourmet and Rafters of Muskoka. You’re welcome to stop there for a light lunch and have a look at some of their unique gift and furniture ideas. Miss Nelles will have the usual hearty fare over weekends with limited week day hours.

You can always count on good food at the Firey Grill in Dorset. Baysville Marina will continue snowmobile rentals. You can stop at Country Charm and fuel up, and we have new a list of accommodations including a house in Baysville that will be rented out by the week starting January 1, 2009, call for more details to 705-646-8919.

You may not know that the Lincoln Lodge “best place to eat by a damn site” burned to the ground in early September, so the Wendigo Bar and Grill is no longer an option.

The owners of the Lincoln are hoping to rebuild, so there will be even more good food options for next year. We will try to keep you informed as building progresses.

The Kelly Shire Snow Run Fundraiser for Breast Cancer research will take place from February 6th to 8th leaving from Deerhurst Resort, and they are asking people to sign up to participate very soon.

And don’t forget Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday in 2009; what could be better than a romantic snowmobiling vacation in Muskoka on Happy Wanderers trails?

If you need information on where to stay, or visit in Lake of Bays, feel free to give us a call at home at 705-646-8919, or email us at danwaters92@gmail.com

See you on the trails.

CAMOPLAST SNO-CROSS CHAMPIONSHIP

Press Release –

S.C.M.X. is glad to announce that it has received a special authorization from I.S.R. (International Snowmobile Racing), for the 2008 – 2009 season.

JUNIOR 14 – 17 class drivers will be allowed to use 2 different sleds: a STOCK 440 liquid or a SUPER STOCK 600 equiped with a SPECIAL throttle lever.

Participants who will choose to use a SUPER STOCK 600 c.c. will have to get the special throttle lever from S.C.M.X. . This special throttle lever is built so that when the throttle is pushed to the maximum, the carburator opening is only 50 % . The performance of the SUPER STOCK 600 c.c. sled will then be comparable to the performance of a STOCK 440 c.c. liquid.

According to some dyno testing, the power curve of both engines (STOCK 440 c.c. liquid and SUPER STOCK 600 c.c. equipped with the SPECIAL throttle lever) is similar.

During the 2008 – 2009 Season, S.C.M.X. will send comments and results to I.S.R. and the manufacturers. If the results of this experience are positive, then at the May 2009 I.S.R. Rules Meeting, a similar rule could be adopted by the I.S.R. affiliated sanctioning groups, for years to come.

Hello All,

Speedwerx, Inc. has changed the name of its lightweight mufflers to “Powder Advantage Lightweight Mufflers” in an effort to end the confusion.

Please make note of this change and we appreciate any help in making this announcement more available to the general public.

Ontario Family Gets National Recognition

At the annual International Snow-mobile Congress meeting this past July, the Canadian Council of Snowmobile Organizations (CCSO) presented its National Excellence Awards.

Among the recipients, the OFSC is very pleased to congratulate its nominee for Outstanding Snowmobile Family of the Year, the Cooper Family, from the Elgin Trail Riders of District 5 of Southwestern Ontario.

Bryan and Shelly Cooper were born into snowmobiling families and had their first rides as baby’s in their mothers’ arms, so sledding is in their blood.

Today, Bryan and Shelly, with daughters Alex and Bryanna, epitomize family snowmobiling in Ontario, volunteering for more over 400 hours each year and raising thousands of dollars for their club and for Easter Seals.

Their exhaustive list of positions and accomplishments is simply remarkable…and it exemplifies the family tradition that is so much a part of snowmobiling throughout rural Ontario.

Without the Cooper’s and the many other families that form the backbone of countless local snowmobile clubs, the OFSC trail system wouldn’t be available for your own family fun each winter.

Two ways you can show your appreciation to the Cooper’s and all other OFSC volunteer families are to buy your 2009 trail permits and then take your family out to go snowmobiling as often as possible this winter!
